Deseo at The Westin Kierland Resort Scottsdale AZ – Worth a Fork

IMG_5100

Deseo is Modern Upscale Latin Cuisine located in the beautiful Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale AZ. They offer a comfortable traditional looking dining room with large windows to view the beautiful desert plantings that surround the resort. They have an open kitchen and you might be able to get a seat at “The Rail” (seats that loop around the open kitchen) to see the kitchen action and make conversation with the Chefs.

We were seated at “The Rail” and got to see the action.

IMG_5105

The started us off with hot steamy out of the oven yucca rolls and soft creamy butter that melted right into the roll.

IMG_5107

We started with what was called “Rainbow” on the menu.

IMG_5110

It was a mix of fresh tasting fish, salmon, tuna and another mild fish that was in white soy citrus and pickled jalapeños. It was refreshing and light. At the time it seemed like the best ceviche I ever had.

We also shared a Wagyu Beef Empanada that was very detailed.

IMG_5112

The Empanada sat in spiced tomato sofrito and was garnished with green apple slaw. The purple dots are some sort of huitlacoche sauce. This was the most high end empanada I ever had anywhere for sure.

For dinner I had the Big Eye Tuna Encebollado.

IMG_5115

Now this dinner was different than I expected. I was expecting a cumin crust. But got a Black Cumin Crust that doesn’t taste the least bit like cumin. Black cumin looks and taste very similar to caraway seeds. Actually I enjoyed the light sprinkle of Black Cumin over the sweet tomatoes. That’s a new taste for me that I will remember.

The fish tasted good in the light refreshing fruity tomato consommé and the accents of pickled shallots, and mini yucca dumplings added more interest to the dish.

My husband had the Duroc Pork Chop.

IMG_5114

The pork chop was covered with a reddish mole that wasn’t bitter with lots of flavors. All kinds of interesting garnishes surrounded the plate such as spiced pepita brittle, a corn tamale, shaved baby carrots and apple.

Sadly I was too full for dessert 🙁

The Discovery Lounge at the Boulders of Carefree AZ makes one Forking Great Sandwich

On the way to The Boulders Resort Carefree AZ

On the way to The Boulders Resort Carefree AZ

The Discovery Lounge is one of several restaurants located in The Boulders Resort in Carefree Arizona. I found out about one special sandwich I had to try so we ventured out to Cave Creek today. The drive to the main building where the Discovery lounge is takes a few minute drive threw the breathtaking desert scenery and a lovey pond near the entrance.

IMG_4814

IMG_4836

IMG_4827

IMG_4815

We soon find the Discovery Lounge in the main building.

IMG_4821

The Discovery lounge is a large very open room with a fireplace and floor to ceiling windows that show the breathtaking Boulders.

IMG_4820

We looked at the menu and decided to split the Baja Fish Tacos and the signature sandwich named “The Bobby Slayer” Steak Torta. The Chef from the Boulders competed on a FoodNetwork TV Show and was victorious with “The Bobby Slayer” Steak Torta against celebrity Chef Bobby Flay so this was a must try sandwich!

"The Bobby Slayer"

“The Bobby Slayer”

“The Bobby Slayer” is very large in size and is filled with mouthwatering, melt in your mouth skirt steak that is a thunderstorm of flavors that lightening strike in your mouth, and then it only get better….with……Oaxacan Chiles, Crispy Chicken Skin, Avocado Creama and Cabbage makes the party complete. I very rarely will eat chicken skin but it was done in a way where I can eat it and added a delicious something different to this amazing sandwich. This sandwich isn’t for the faint of heart, children or first dates. This sandwich is powerfully flavorful, spicy but not too spicy, full of juice. It’s just FORKING Delicious! I just didn’t want this party to end. House made potato chips are included that are whisper thin, crisp and SEEM as if they are grease and calorie free.

Baja Fish Tacos

Baja Fish Tacos

As for the Baja Fish Tacos………The fresh grilled lime was a nice touch and I loved that quality fish called Ling Cod was used in the dish but flavor wise these tacos were very one note. These  tacos contained nicely grilled fish over plain cabbage with some Cotija Cheese sprinkled on. Room temperature flour tortillas held them together and a smokey spiced mayonnaise was served on the side but it wasn’t enough to  give them a taco taste. Perhaps if the cabbage had a vinaigrette with an herb like cilantro? or maybe some sort of tomato or fruit salsa was included the taste factor would have been elevated.

Service was good and that ……….

“Bobby Flay Slayer” Sandwich was Forking Great!

You might travel across town to dine here. Extensive Wine List, Famous Stetson Salad and Mushroom Pan Fry and more in the Touristy Arts District

You would travel travel across town for the atmosphere and The “Bobby Slayer” Sandwich. I don’t forking know about the rest at this time.

I do note this review is only based on one visit. The Bobby Slayer Skirt Steak Sandwich was FORKING Delicious. The menu is limited and I WARN YOU I don’t know if anything else on the menu comes close.

FnB Restaurant of Scottsdale AZ is Worth a Fork

FnB Scottsdale AZ

FnB Scottsdale AZ

FnB restaurant of Scottsdale AZ is located in the Arts District of Scottsdale. This is a contemporary restaurant that serves a farm focused, globally inspired Foods and Arizona’s most notable wines. On the one end of the restaurant they have a tiny store section where they sell some local organic produce, local artisan goods and Arizona Wine. The food this restaurant serves is among the best that Arizona has to offer as the Co-Owner and Chef has been nominated several times for a James Beard Award.

IMG_4576

I’ve been to FnB dozens of times over the years because I forking love the food and good service. It’s a little thing but this is the only restaurant in the metro area of Phoenix that actually will give you a black linen napkin if your wearing black. That is an example of classic service.  I have to say I didn’t get that at places I spent twice as much to dine at this past year.

When I dine at FnB not only do I enjoy a delicious meal I also become a better cook myself by learning more about food from dining here. Every time I come here there are always things on the seasonal menu I learn about. On my most recent visit they had Bagna Cauda(a warm hot Italian dip), Shiraz Salad (Persian Tomato and Cucumber Salad), and Sauce Gribiche (French Cold Hard Yolk Sauce) on the menu.

The menu changes with the season and is usually broken down into selections of small cold plates to share, small hot plates and entree plates.

IMG_4571

They started us off with Noble Bread Heirloom Grain Bread, a locally made bread that’s considered to be the best in Arizona that made from stone ground local heirloom grains and quality olive oil that’s flavorful.

We picked a small cold plate of Melon, Mango, Jicama, Cucumber, Lime, Chile, Feta Cheese and Purslane.

IMG_4568

Everything worked together like magic. It wasn’t in the description but small rich pieces of ripe avocado brought a satisfying richness to the plate. The Purslane gave off a crisp juicy text and a slight bit of mild sour and saltiness to balance things out. I’ve never actually eaten purslane before. It’s a common weed here in the U.S but in this fruit bowl the Purslane works really well with food.

We also shared House Cured Salmon with Citrus Labne, Heirloom Tomatoes, Aleppo Pepper and Radishes.

IMG_4570

The Star of this plate was the really perfect Salmon. There wasn’t much of it and it almost got lost among all the lovely vegetables in the tasty citrus Labne but the Salmon was the memorable part. The Salmon just melted in my mouth. It was sliced with expert precision and the gentle perfect flavors that didn’t over power the fish and were perfect accents.

For Dinner I had the Halibut.

IMG_4574

The Fish was prepared in a masterful way as it was perfection. The halibut had a nice seasoned crust and was ultra moist and flaky. The Sauce Gribiche with Mustard was simply delicious. I had no idea that these sauces would be so delicious on fish. That was an inspiring combination.

My husband had the Duck with Summer Herbs and Ancient Grains.

IMG_4573

I didn’t try it but my husband said it was savory and nicely seasoned.

I was stuffed but managed to share some dessert because desert is always good here.

IMG_4579

We shared a Berry Short Cake served with Sweet Republic Vanilla Ice-Cream. The berries were sweet and very flavorful. The cake part seemed very rich with butter, not too sweet and harmonized well with everything.

Caribbean Cuisine in Glendale AZ is Worth a FORK!

IMG_4482

You can get a taste of the Caribbean at Caribbean Cuisine in Glendale AZ. I do note this is a very small NO FRILLS, mostly take-out restaurant with with only four tables.

IMG_4477

You are on Caribbean time when you dine here. Music from the Islands fills the air along with the aroma of slow cooked stewed foods. The food is prepared like the way it’s made at a Caribbean Home and that means it’s served in a Caribbean Minute thats English for when it’s done you’ll get it, possibly 20-30 minutes depending on what you order.

According to www.CaribbeanTraveler.com Caribbean Food is influenced by Chinese, Indian, Dutch, French, Spanish, British and Amerindian Foods.

IMG_4476

We ordered from the friendly cashier who is also the cook and waited a Caribbean Minute.

I received the Escovitch.

IMG_4479

It’s a whole fish that might have been poached then marinated with herbs, spices and vinegar and then  fried. Strips of marinated peppers including a Scotch Bonnet cover the whole fish. This is spicy but tasty and interesting. It’s not too strong with heat or vinegar it’s just right. The plate is served with stewed cabbage that sucks up the flavors from the marinated peppers. They give a very generous portion of rice and beans that are topped with sweet fried plantains.

My husband had the Oxtail.

IMG_4481

The Oxtail has been slow roasted and is very succulent and very beefy. I didn’t try the potato but my husband said it was amazing how it was slow cooked with the beef and absorbed all the beefy goodness. This plate is also served with rice and beans with stewed cabbage and plantains.

Other dishes I tried from here were……..

IMG_4490

Curry Chicken

IMG_4491

Jerk Chicken

IMG_4492

Stewed Red Snapper.

All the food was delicious! Portions are large and Prices are very low.

Caribbean Cuisine in Glendale AZ is Definitely Worth a Fork.

NO..Your not going to drive across town to dine here...but if your in the area if they serve what I had most of the food is very tasty and fresh.

No Frills Atmosphere and no public restroom but very good food with a pleasant cashier who is your cook. No your not going to drive across town to dine here but this place is recommended if your in the neighborhood.

Fruit, Nut and Cheese Salads I had in Metro Phoenix

Farm & Craft Scottsdale AZ Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad $13.00

Farm & Craft Scottsdale AZ Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad $13.00

When I go out for lunch often I’ll order some sort of salad and often the salad has nut, some sort of cheese and fruit. Usually but not always a protein like chicken is an add on. I recently had lunch at the newly opened Farm & Craft in Scottsdale AZ. The ingredients that my salad was made of were all organic, local and what seemed like farm fresh. My salad was made of organic fresh spinach, goat cheese that tasted fresh made, very good strawberries that tasted fresh picked, plain walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette. This was a good salad and was very dieter friendly. I have to guess but I think the amount of chicken was about two ounces but with the goat cheese and walnuts it was just enough food. Chicken was a four dollar add on so this salad was $13.00.

Cucina Tagliani Glendale AZ Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad that includes Chicken

Cucina Tagliani Glendale AZ Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad that includes Chicken

They also give you a basket of garlic toast too. This is a very good value and among the better entree salads in this neighborhood.

Kale Quinoa Cranberries, Toasted Almonds, Seasonal Fruit, Goat Cheese with added Chicken $16.00 from Amuse Bouche of Surprise AZ

Kale Quinoa Cranberries, Toasted Almonds, Seasonal Fruit, Goat Cheese with added Chicken $16.00 from Amuse Bouche of Surprise AZ

Amuse Bouche offers a Kale and Quinoa Salad with Toasted Almonds, Seasonal Fruit and Goat Cheese. I added the additional Chicken to my salad and the price came to $16.00. I do also note a fresh baked roll was made for me served with butter. This was the most expensive of the Fruit, Nut and Cheese Salads but it was also Forking Delicious!

I think the super sweet low acid pineapple was magical against the creamy mild goat cheese and the honey lime vinaigrette was memorable. Kale has some bite but the cranberries balance it out. A great play of flavors and textures also a generous amount of chicken. This salad is among the best entree salads I ever had.

El Alboroto Mariscos Y Cheavelas Restaurant Peoria AZ – Is Worth a Fork!

IMG_4433

El Alboroto Mariscos Y Chavelas Restaurant is easy to pass by because the pervious shuttered restaurant’s  sign haven’t been replaced. This restaurant is located in an older strip mall in not the prettiest part of Peoria AZ. This by no means is a fancy place and you are only here to have some of the best freshest Mexican Style Seafood in the Metro Phoenix Area.

As I entered I wasn’t sure if they were serving food because the entrance was dark and is filled with stacked tables, chairs and a deserted hostess stand and an empty bar. A few steps away I noticed the dining room and walked that way.

IMG_4425

The dining room is sort of mis-matched and unusual in shape. Tables and booths are older and a little beat up. Mexican Music is slightly too loud. The menu is mostly shrimp, octopus and fish. If your not into shrimp octopus or fish your in the wrong place.

IMG_4421

IMG_4420

They started us off with crisp corn tortillas, lots of limes and a fresh made salsa that was rich with tomato taste and slightly sweet. Many bottled Mexican Sauces are on all the tables.

IMG_4422

Soon complimentary fish tacos arrive. I don’t know if they give everyone fish tacos or maybe the chef just felt generous today.

IMG_4427

The fish tacos are battered mild tasting fish with fresh crispy cabbage and some pico de gallo and a creamy seasoned fresh sauce. The taco was very tasty and did remind me of the fish tacos I tried in Mexico.

My entree was called Pescado Empapelado – Wrapped Fish.

IMG_4432

The fish was wrapped with foil and cooked with peppers, onions, a jalapeño and seasoning in their own juices. This sea bass fish was really fresh tasting and prepared to perfection. This was the best Mexican fish dish I tried in Metro Phoenix so far. It also was almost identical to a fish dish I had from a Seafood Restaurant in Mexico but maybe better! The rice was tasty and the salad garnish was topped with a creamy ripe sliced  avocado and HOT Steamy corn tortillas came wrapped in foil.

My husband had the Camaron A La Diabla – Spicy Shrimp.

IMG_4428

This dish was spicy but not too spicy and flavorful with shrimp that were prepared well.

We were very happy we found a very good Mexican Seafood restaurant.

The service was efficient and the owner Jose was nice and friendly!

NO..Your not going to drive across town to dine here...but if your in the area if they serve what I had most of the food is very tasty and fresh.

I feel that most people won’t drive across town to dine here because of the atmosphere. I do note that this restaurant is newly opened  but has someone strong in the kitchen that knows what they are doing. The food really was very good at the time of my visit and is certainly just as good but possibly better than the well known Mexican Seafood Restaurants I’ve been to around Phoenix.

This restaurant doesn’t have a web site but you can find El Alboroto Mariscos Y Chavelas on FaceBook.

2016 Best $10.00 or under Food I had in the Metro Phoenix AZ area this Year

Banh Mi Bistro $8.00 _The Chicken and Rice Plate -Phoenix AZ

Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery $8.00 _The Chicken and Rice Plate -Phoenix AZ

There’s BUNCHES of very good and great deals for you to dine on in the Metro Phoenix area where the meals can run $10.00 or less. I’m picking a few of my favorites in no particular order that I enjoyed this year. I also must note that prices are subject to change and on the prices I don’t remember I went to the websites and hoped the prices are up to date.

Everything on the Banh Mi Bistro – Vietnamese (Pho-Free) Eatery is under $10.00 and just about everything is wonderfully delicious! For me the biggest value is the Chicken and Rice plate that is served with Jasmin Rice, an egg roll and salad garnish with house vinaigrette. This has to be among the tastiest $8.00 meals you can get anywhere. The chicken is so moist and flavorful with exotic Asian flavorings. The salad looks simple but is light and refreshing.

Huitlacoche Machete – $7.99 -Azteca Estilo DF Phoenix AZ

For only $7.99 I think you can feed two people with one of the Machetes that Azteca Estilo DF in Phoenix offers. I enjoyed the Hutlacoche Machete. It’s a folded giant corn tortilla that was packed with melty mild white cheese and what’s called the Mexican Truffle, also called corn smut and Hutlacoche. Corn Smut is considered a delicacy. It’s mushroomy it’s woodsy and was kind of special and delicious!

Rocket Burger Phoenix AZ

Rocket burger is well know for their massive world of sodas and of certainly for their many sizes and varieties of their hand packed angus burgers. La 15 Y Salsas - Phoenix AZ - Combo De Chile Relleno $9.00

La 15 Y Salsas – Phoenix AZ – Combo De Chile Relleno $9.00

It was hard to pick between the two dishes I recently tried because both were very good but I went with the Combo De Chile Relleno ($9.00) because it was more textures and more layers of flavors than the also exstreamly good chicken enchiladas topped with a blanket of dark mole called enmoladas. This creation is tender moist flavorful chicken with raisins and nuts in a battered chile that’s topped with spicy tomato sauce, served with seasoned rice, beans and hot steamy tortillas. La 15 Y Salsas is one of the best restaurants in the Metro Phoenix Area for Oaxaca Mexican Food.

New Asian Kitchen – Cantonese Chow Mein $8.95 Phoenix AZ

My favorite Take Out Chinese Food comes from New Asian Kitchen in Phoenix AZ. A new favorite dish that they prepare is the Cantonese Chow Mein ($8.95). If you like take out Chinese Food you will love this dish that layered in interesting flavors and textures. Their vegetables are always fresh and crisp. The meats are always moist and tender. They even offer the hard to come by and impressive Dry Sautéed Beef Chow Fun a more difficult dish to prepare. No other Take Out Chinese compares to New Asian Kitchen for several miles around.

Hummus Xpress – Tempe AZ- The most expensive item called The Plate $9.95

Hummus Xpress is a casual Middle Eastern Style Fast Food behind a hot and cold salad bar kind of place. Meals range in price from $6.45 for a pita sandwich, bowl $7.95, salad, $8.65 to The Plate. $9.95. I don’t get to eat here often because Tempe AZ is pretty far for me so I always get the largest size that is the plate. The plate is under $10.00 (at this time) and often I get two meals out of it. I always have many choices to pick from but what I typically would fill my plate with starts with seasoned rice, Aleppo Brisket, Lebanese Falafels, Moroccan carrots, eggplant, Two kinds of hummus like lemon ginger and usually plain, or beet, Tabbouleh, fresh made pickled beets, pickles, a few other toppers, Shrug Sauce and a fresh made whole wheat flat bread. The food is so healthy that you never feel weighted down and everything is delicious. The owner is a formally trained chef and all the food is delicious!

Taiwanese Pancake Stand

I was very impressed with the 75cent Taiwanese Pancake I tasted made fresh and hot to order. I picked the one filled with beans. The pancake was hot and airy with crispy ends and the beans seemed like they were fresh made. It wasn’t sweet like I was expecting. It was a surprise!

My Trip to The Nee House in Phoenix AZ

IMG_4122

The Nee House is a casual Chinese Restaurant that serves American/Chinese Favorites, some Cantonese Cuisine and Fresh Fish from Tanks. On my visit the sign read “Fresh Sea Bass” so I was interested in that. I asked the server about it and she tells me they haven’t had fresh sea bass in days but are offering tilapia today. I’m not the biggest fan of tilapia so I ordered the rock cod with vegetables off the menu.

IMG_4130

The fish was clean tasting and was prepared to perfection and just melted in my mouth. It came in a very light but velvety sauce with essence of chicken and the sauce was laced with ginger and garlic. The fish was very good.

I went to get some rice.

IMG_4127

I almost didn’t because the rice paddle appears dirty. On closer inspection we decide the paddle isn’t dirty and is just stained. A soaking in bleach would remedy the paddle and make me feel better about having rice here.

The bok choy was almost good.

IMG_4132

Not cleaned correctly. I would get this dish again but not with bok choy.

My husband had the Szechwan Pork.

IMG_4126

It was way better than most any other Americanized Szechwan dish we tried but not the same as from an Authenic Style Szechwan Restaurant we have been too. Americanized Szechwan is saucy with some sweet and not as fiery. Authentic Style is loaded with chili peppers and Szechwan numbing peppercorns that numb your mouth so you can enjoy the heat more. The dish should be just barely sauced and that sauce should be thin and should lack sweetness. This dish was close.

Not perfect here but they do serve above average Chinese Food.

NO..Your not going to drive across town to dine here...but if your in the area if they serve what I had most of the food is very tasty and fresh.

De Mi Tierra Restaurant Phoenix AZ – Latin Food – Worth a Fork

Pollo Guisado

Pollo Guisado

De Mi Tierra is a small casual Latin Restaurant located in an older strip mall in Phoenix AZ.

IMG_4342

The tiny restaurant showcases dishes from Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Ricco and The Dominican Republic. Latin posters adorn the room and a Latin Food Show was playing on the TV.

IMG_4343

We decided to start out by sharing a Chicken Empanada.

IMG_4346

The empanada was large enough to be a small meal. Inside it was delicious moist flavorful tender chicken. Simple but delicious. The crust was bubbly and crisp and slightly greasy. We both thought it was better without the sauces. A bargain at only $3.50 (at the time of this review).

For my meal I had the Pollo Guisado. This dish is the staple of dishes in the Dominican Republic I read that often this dish is served in Dominican Republic Households usually two – three times a week. It’s chicken that’s washed with vinegar or lime juice and then marinated for two days in ingredients that may include – Worcestershire sauce or sweet wine, garlic, celery, lemon, oregano, peppers, olives, tomato, achiote oil and cilantro. The chicken then gets caramelized in a pot of browning sugar and then stewed in the marinade sometimes with the chicken liver.

Pollo Guisado

Pollo Guisado

The chicken was mostly chicken legs and the meat was very tender and balanced with flavors. My plate came with a very generous portion of yellow rice with pigeon peas that was also flavorful.

My husband tried the Chicharron De Pollo with white rice and red bean stew.

IMG_4349 IMG_4350

This dish is Dominican Republic Style Fried Chicken. To me it tasted like fried chicken that could have came from any restaurant but it might have been marinated in lime juice and garlic and then fried. The skin was crisp and the meat was tender and flavorful. Rice was a large portion and seemed fresh made. The red bean stew was more like a smoky bean soup.

If your in the area want to try Latin Food you might want to give De Mi Tierra Restaurant a Try!

Portions are large and at the time of this review prices are low. Most entrees run $9.50 and the most expensive dishes are $12.99 (at the time of this review).

Service was very relaxed.

NO..Your not going to drive across town to dine here...but if your in the area if they serve what I had most of the food is very tasty and fresh.

It’s good and chicken dishes seem solid. If your in the area and want to try Latin Foods this place is WORTH a Fork!

I have three Asian Markets within a half hour radius from where I live. I usually go the the closest one because I always see lots of interesting vegetables there and unusual international items. The produce section is very seasonal and the selection differs some every time I’m here.

This market sells a variety of Korean Goods, Asian Goods, Indian Goods, Mexican Goods, Middle Eastern Goods and European Goods.

Green Almonds were in season at the time and they were at this market.

Someone cooking up Taiwanese Pancakes.

IMG_4300

I tried a Red Bean filled pancake. The pancake taste like a normal American Pancake but with a crispness on the outsides and the filling is just fresh cooked beans. An interesting fresh taste of Taiwan for only .75 cents.

That was just some of what I saw at my local Asian Markets.
