Fruit, Nut and Cheese Salads I had in Metro Phoenix

Farm & Craft Scottsdale AZ Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad $13.00

Farm & Craft Scottsdale AZ Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad $13.00

When I go out for lunch often I’ll order some sort of salad and often the salad has nut, some sort of cheese and fruit. Usually but not always a protein like chicken is an add on. I recently had lunch at the newly opened Farm & Craft in Scottsdale AZ. The ingredients that my salad was made of were all organic, local and what seemed like farm fresh. My salad was made of organic fresh spinach, goat cheese that tasted fresh made, very good strawberries that tasted fresh picked, plain walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette. This was a good salad and was very dieter friendly. I have to guess but I think the amount of chicken was about two ounces but with the goat cheese and walnuts it was just enough food. Chicken was a four dollar add on so this salad was $13.00.

Kale Quinoa Cranberries, Toasted Almonds, Seasonal Fruit, Goat Cheese with added Chicken $16.00 from Amuse Bouche of Surprise AZ

Kale Quinoa Cranberries, Toasted Almonds, Seasonal Fruit, Goat Cheese with added Chicken $16.00 from Amuse Bouche of Surprise AZ

Amuse Bouche offers a Kale and Quinoa Salad with Toasted Almonds, Seasonal Fruit and Goat Cheese. I added the additional Chicken to my salad and the price came to $16.00. I do also note a fresh baked roll was made for me served with butter. This was the most expensive of the Fruit, Nut and Cheese Salads but it was also Forking Delicious!

I think the super sweet low acid pineapple was magical against the creamy mild goat cheese and the honey lime vinaigrette was memorable. Kale has some bite but the cranberries balance it out. A great play of flavors and textures also a generous amount of chicken. This salad is among the best entree salads I ever had.

Everything on the Banh Mi Bistro – Vietnamese (Pho-Free) Eatery is under $10.00 and just about everything is wonderfully delicious! For me the biggest value is the Chicken and Rice plate that is served with Jasmin Rice, an egg roll and salad garnish with house vinaigrette. This has to be among the tastiest $8.00 meals you can get anywhere. The chicken is so moist and flavorful with exotic Asian flavorings. The salad looks simple but is light and refreshing.

Huitlacoche Machete – $7.99 -Azteca Estilo DF Phoenix AZ

For only $7.99 I think you can feed two people with one of the Machetes that Azteca Estilo DF in Phoenix offers. I enjoyed the Hutlacoche Machete. It’s a folded giant corn tortilla that was packed with melty mild white cheese and what’s called the Mexican Truffle, also called corn smut and Hutlacoche. Corn Smut is considered a delicacy. It’s mushroomy it’s woodsy and was kind of special and delicious!

La 15 Y Salsas - Phoenix AZ - Combo De Chile Relleno $9.00

La 15 Y Salsas – Phoenix AZ – Combo De Chile Relleno $9.00

It was hard to pick between the two dishes I recently tried because both were very good but I went with the Combo De Chile Relleno ($9.00) because it was more textures and more layers of flavors than the also exstreamly good chicken enchiladas topped with a blanket of dark mole called enmoladas. This creation is tender moist flavorful chicken with raisins and nuts in a battered chile that’s topped with spicy tomato sauce, served with seasoned rice, beans and hot steamy tortillas. My favorite Take Out Chinese Food comes from New Asian Kitchen in Phoenix AZ. A new favorite dish that they prepare is the Cantonese Chow Mein ($8.95). If you like take out Chinese Food you will love this dish that layered in interesting flavors and textures. Their vegetables are always fresh and crisp. The meats are always moist and tender. They even offer the hard to come by and impressive Dry Sautéed Beef Chow Fun a more difficult dish to prepare. No other Take Out Chinese compares to New Asian Kitchen for several miles around.

Hummus Xpress - Tempe AZ- The most expensive item called The Plate $9.95

Hummus Xpress – Tempe AZ- The most expensive item called The Plate $9.95

Hummus Xpress is a casual Middle Eastern Style Fast Food behind a hot and cold salad bar kind of place. Meals range in price from $6.45 for a pita sandwich, bowl $7.95, salad, $8.65 to The Plate. $9.95. I don’t get to eat here often because Tempe AZ is pretty far for me so I always get the largest size that is the plate. The plate is under $10.00 (at this time) and often I get two meals out of it. I always have many choices to pick from but what I typically would fill my plate with starts with seasoned rice, Aleppo Brisket, Lebanese Falafels, Moroccan carrots, eggplant, Two kinds of hummus like lemon ginger and usually plain, or beet, Tabbouleh, fresh made pickled beets, pickles, a few other toppers, Shrug Sauce and a fresh made whole wheat flat bread. The food is so healthy that you never feel weighted down and everything is delicious. The owner is a formally trained chef and all the food is delicious!

An honorable Mention goes to the little Taiwanese Food Stand in the Lee Lee Market in Peoria AZ.

Taiwanese Pancake Stand

Taiwanese Pancake Stand

I was very impressed with the 75cent Taiwanese Pancake I tasted made fresh and hot to order. I picked the one filled with beans. The pancake was hot and airy with crispy ends and the beans seemed like they were fresh made. It wasn’t sweet like I was expecting. It was a surprise!

Just some of what I saw at the local Asian Markets

IMG_3142

I have three Asian Markets within a half hour radius from where I live. I usually go the the closest one because I always see lots of interesting vegetables there and unusual international items. The produce section is very seasonal and the selection differs some every time I’m here.

This market sells a variety of Korean Goods, Asian Goods, Indian Goods, Mexican Goods, Middle Eastern Goods and European Goods.

Green Almonds were in season at the time and they were at this market.

Sometimes A Restaurant Menu Just Reads Like a Fantasy Novel

IMG_4377

The reviews for State 48 Brewery in Surprise AZ ran a 4.5 average on a popular review site so I thought this restaurant is worth a try. I also read that the owners have years of experience working at impressive restaurants. The current menu for this restaurant is well written and sounded interesting to me.

As we drove up I saw that this was an enormous building. I guess the brewing area takes up a bunch of room.

We were seated at a very uncomfortable booth. Not much room between our stomachs and table and it felt like the seats were reclining ……..

IMG_4303

……..so it was hard to sit up at the table. I never sat in a booth that felt like that before but just got over it and sat there anyway.

We were going to start with a house made beer. But we learned that their beers aren’t ready yet and they won’t be able to serve their own beer for several weeks so we ordered something else.

We started with an appetizer of Ahi Tuna Tostadas. The description sounded delicious. Ahi Tuna Tartare over a corn tostada with roasted corn and jicama slaw with pickled red onions and cilantro-lime aioli.

The food runner drops off the appetizer without sharing plates.

IMG_4283

The appetizer is similar but different from the description.

Tuna Tartare is one French Fry Shaped piece of tuna that’s very hard to eat and certainly not appetizing. The definition of tuna Tartare is ..raw tuna cut up in small pieces, often it’s flavored. The French Fry Shape of tuna they gave me does not fit the definition of tartare.

The tostada’s roasted corn and jicama slaw doesn’t contain jicama and maybe had one kernel of corn and was mostly just green cabbage in a non-traditional tasting dressing with an orange tint.

The cilantro-lime aioli lacked cilantro and maybe lime and just seemed like a loose white liquid.

I did inform the waiter about the tostada and he said, “I’ll tell the kitchen.”

Now my Falafel Burger arrives and a big side of that Roasted Corn and Jicama Slaw…..

WhyyyyyyyWhyyyyyWhy.....

WhyyyyyyyWhyyyyyWhy…..

that didn’t contain any Roasted Corn or Jicama.

IMG_4291

The Falafel Burger is impossible to eat as a sandwich so I separated it at the falafels and skipped the roll. I do note they offered a bun-less falafel burger that I should have went with. So with a knife and fork I try a piece of falafel. I am relieved that it is correctly seasoned. It’s didn’t seem like a fresh herb seasoning but still it was seasoned so it was ok with me. One falafel patty had goat feta cheese on it that was good. The other Falafel was suppose to have green curry coconut yogurt. I can’t identify what it was but It had a loose unflavored white liquid that was similar to what the tostada had on it.

Now I’m left with that forking cole slaw with a orange tint. I actually usually love cole slaw but this one is too odd for me to enjoy. It’s sort of too sour without sweetness. It’s just not flavored in an appetizing way to me. The Roasted Corn and Jicama Slaw that doesn’t contain roasted corn or jicama. The menu was just a fantasy novel I read. No cilantro, no roasted corn, no jicama, no green curry, no coconut and tartare that was just a slab of not the cleanest tasting fish. The Ahi is in the photo below and isn’t bright with color.

IMG_4284

IMG_4292

Someone approaches the table who might be a manager. I told her that there isn’t any jicama or roasted corn in the slaw.

She says to me that you know jicama …

JICAMA

JICAMA

……..looks just like cabbage.

CABBAGE

CABBAGE

I’m thinking to myself……WTFork………

IMG_4306

.Jicama looks nothing like cabbage. This woman is insinuating that I don’t know the difference between cabbage and jicama.

That's Forked up!

That’s Forked up!

Suddenly I feel I’m trapped in an episode of Star Trek called Chain of Command.

IMG_4379

Where the Cardassian interrogates and tortures  Captain Picard and forces him to say that there is 5 green lights when there is truly 4 green lights.

IMG_4378

“There isn’t jicama or corn in the slaw”

IMG_4381

“There IS JICAMA and CORN in the Forking Slaw”

IMG_4378

“There isn’t jicama or roasted corn in the slaw”

IMG_4381

“There IS JICAMA and CORN in the slaw”

I stick my fork in the slaw and show her it just green cabbage.

IMG_4292

Now she says that they just opened this week and they were busier than they expected to be.

I tell her that I didn’t have an issue with them running out of things. I told her it’s better to be honest to the customer and let them know about substitutions so I’d be ready for a substitution or I would have the option to order something else if I wanted too.

She didn’t say that she was sorry about my experience. She just said she’d tell the kitchen. She also didn’t care that I hardly touched the cole slaw and only ate the falafels.

My husband had the Beer Cheese Steak with Fries.

IMG_4287

This sandwich was made with tender flavorful beef. This was a good platter but the food runner ran off and didn’t offer ketchup for the fries.

This restaurant is brand new and has only been open a few weeks. I experienced substitutions, misses and possibly management attitude. I note they do offer a lovely menu and with strong leadership in the kitchen and someone with front of the house skills this restaurant can become a hot spot.

I personally feel that when a restaurant runs out of things that they have three choices.

1- someone runs out a buys what they need.

2- They take things off the menu. That is called to 86 it and restaurant language.

3- They make substitutions and let the guest know so the guest can accept the substitution or have the choice to order something else.

I note your experience should differ than what I experienced from this restaurant.

Sometimes when you visit a restaurant the menu just reads like a fantasy novel.

This is a newly opened restaurant so it’s not rated.

I also note I purposely didn’t use the name of this restaurant in the title of this review because it’s not my intention to bring a negative experience about them to the public. This information is only for people who read my blog and have a desire to hear The Forking Truth.

Forking Difference Between Cobbler, Crumble and Crisp

Southern Inspired Blueberry Cobbler

Southern Inspired Blueberry Cobbler

All the dishes Cobbler, Crumble and Crisp are all similar but there are some differences.

Cobbler is a dish consisting of fruit or savory filling poured into a large baking dish covered with batter, biscuit or dumpling before being baked.

The Crumble might be known as a Brown Betty and is of British Origin. It can be sweet or savory. The Crumble is CRUMBLY and is a mixture of usually butter, flour and sugar. Savory crumbles are made with cheese. Just think about crumb tops.

A Crisp really is a crumble but is usually made with oats and some sort of nuts.

A lesser known dessert that is related is a Pandowdy that is a deep dish spiced apple dessert covered with a rich crust.

That is the Forking Difference between a Cobbler, a crumble and a Crisp.

Cilantro – The Forking Truth is That Soap Taste Might be Poison

IMG_4101

Some people love cilantro and to other people cilantro is inedible and taste like a mouth full of soap.

Truth- Some people are genetically predisposed to dislike cilantro.

Truth- Some people have a natural reason to dislike cilantro such as: sinus or oral  infection and         low zinc levels

Truth- Fluoride Sodium is used in pesticides and taste like soap to humans because it’s poisonous. The pesticide might have been sprayed on the cilantro and that is what some people might be tasting.

THE FORKING TRUTH IS THAT SOAP TASTE MIGHT BE POISON

True Story this is how I forking found out.

I grow some mint in my yard. I love mint. I can eat mint everywhere and all the mint I purchase from the store agrees with me. I live in Arizona where it’s different from other parts of the country and heavy pesticides are used regularly all over and around your house to keep out very dangerous insects like scorpions, desert spiders and more pests. My mint that grows by my house gets sprayed with these strong pesticides and always taste like soap to me no matter how much I wash the mint. I don’t have an issue with mint. But I do taste something is wrong with the mint so it’s totally makes sense that some people also taste pesticides on the cilantro.

The Forking Truth is that Soap Taste with Cilantro Might be Poison.

People in Metro Phoenix AZ Take Dogs Food Shopping at Costco

IMG_3840

I don’t remember seeing people shopping with their dogs back east where I used to live but I do see it from time to time around Phoenix AZ. People are permitted to shop at Costco, a food and more warehouse with a service dog.

IMG_4077

This dog isn’t wearing a service jacket but seems well trained and could certainly pass for a service dog with an elderly man.

IMG_4078

Forgive me if I’m wrong about this but this dog doesn’t appear to be a service dog and it’s sitting in the child seat of the cart with a child sitting in the cart with groceries. What kind of service is this dog doing? Warming up the cart with it’s butt? Maybe this dog’s job is to taste the Costco food samples as a tester?

IMG_4080

This dog also doesn’t resemble a service dog to me but might be….?

IMG_4081

The woman is lucky as she doesn’t have an obvious looking handicap.

Not sure what kind of service dog this small white fluffy dog can be?

 The Forking Truth

The Forking Truth

The Forking Truth is that It’s really hard to find a GREAT Vegetable Peeler

IMG_1816

I got this CIA Culinary Arts Institute vegetable peeler. I think I paid 7 or 8 dollars for it maybe last year. I thought it worked great when I bought it but now it doesn’t peel.  I still have it but never use it.

IMG_1810

I recently purchased this vegetable peeler and paid about $5.00 for it because it looked very different to me and I thought it might be very good. It had a serrated blade and it looked like it had a carbon surface. I used it once and thought it was the best vegetable peeler I ever forking used. The skin of the carrot came off so easily with no pressure at all. I never had a vegetable peeler that worked so smoothly before.

BUT……..

After I used it just once.

JUST ONCE!

JUST FORKING ONCE.

I washed it by hand and thought some of the carrot just stayed in the blade so I threw it in the dishwasher and this is how it came out. Now I have to forking throw this peeler the fork out because it rusted.

IMG_1808

About 3 years ago I purchased this $1.50 vegetable peeler from Ikea.

IMG_1817

The handle wobbles a bit when I use it. It peels carrots but nothing else.

I don’t remember when I purchased the wooden handle vegetable peeler in the photo below but it’s going in the trash because it never forking worked. It was suppose to peel and do fancy peeling on the other side. It doesn’t forking peel a carrot, a potato or a thing.

IMG_4016

I recently picked up the white handled peeler at the AZ International Market in Mesa AZ for $1.50. It doesn’t peel potatoes and hardly can peel a carrot. I don’t need it so it’s going in the trash along with the wooden handled peeler.

I recently got this Oneida Brand Peeler. I think I paid about $4.99 for it.

IMG_4015

At the moment it’s my only peeler that works on everything. It’s very awkward to use because it has a very small head and doesn’t feel right in the hand.

The Forking Truth is that it’s very hard to find a really great vegetable peeler.

My Trip to Barrio Cafe Gran Reserva in Phoenix AZ ****UPDATE Now CLOSED FOR BUSINESS

IMG_3935

Update******Now CLOSED FOR BUSINESS ***The Barrio Cafe Grand Reserva in Phoenix AZ is a newly opened very upscale Mexican Restaurant owned by a locally famous James Beard Nominated Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza. She is very well known for her guacamole topped with pomegranate seeds, her Oochinita Pibil and Chiles en Nogada.

The restaurant is very tiny and only has up to 8 small formal tables if they aren’t pushed together. The outside around the restaurant is decorated with all kinds of whimsical things like crochet around the trees, strange dolls, lots of colors, multi color string lights and all kinds of things.

The inside has a very different look. It truly feels like you are seated in a vestibule at an art museum with lots of bright natural light.

IMG_3918

Fine Artwork is all around you that tells a story.

IMG_3917

IMG_3910

IMG_3920

With music from La LLorona. Is about a ghost of a woman in-between worlds who lost her children that’s popular in Mexican folklore.

Back to the restaurant.

The bar and kitchen are postage stamp sized.

IMG_3915

This is one of the most anticipated restaurant openings of the year. I tried to make a dinner reservation and my message was that nothing was available in the time slot I wanted for eight weeks.

I didn’t think I’d get in for lunch but I did easily.

To my surprise the lunch menu was more like a dinner menu and also sort of dinner priced.

IMG_3908

I had to ask the waiter about some of the ingredients because some weren’t familiar to me.

We ordered and complimentary bread and roasted olives arrive.

IMG_3909

Perhaps the olives are a nod to Arizona since olives grow almost everywhere here.

Soon a house salad arrives.

IMG_3921

It’s not an average mixed greens salad. It’s full of mixed greens and herbs I’ve never seen or tasted before that are absolutely delicious! The vinaigrette is spicy with sweetness but different and unlike flavors I tried before. Very very good! Very powerful with flavors.

I tried the Tacuba.

IMG_3925

They were made of what’s called tortillas de nixtamal a process were the maize is soaked and cooked in lime water (not the citrus). The tortillas were filled with fresh spinach, several sauces and many cheeses I never had before. These were good anyone would like them but I was left slightly deflated after the fireworks of flavors from the previous salad.

Half way threw me and my husband switched plates.

IMG_3923

The Mole du Jour-Chicken.

Every mole is different as this one was to me. This wasn’t the smoothest mole. Look close to the mound of chicken. But this mole was maybe the deepest tasting one I ever tried. It was deep like coffee. I was expecting maybe part of stewed chicken but they serve matchstick cut white meat chicken breast. The chicken was tender and natural tasting. The rice was studded with some surprises  tangy and a few other flavors.

At the time of this review this newly opened restaurant was only open for three days and I wouldn’t be surprised if changes are made to the lunch menu.
