Dining Out With DOGS in Metro Phoenix AZ February 2021- Phila-Deli, Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery, The Bourbon Cellar, Cucina Tagliani

Dining out with dogs in metro Phoenix is just a “FLUFF” story about taking my dogs out to eat. It sort of started when my dog Louie was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. We were told that he probably only had 3 months or up to 6 month to live. He already was elderly and couldn’t do a lot but he always enjoyed eating and also going out to eat. I took Louie out to eat as often as I could and Louie made it another SEVENTEEN months. Today I take my current dogs out to eat when I can.

There are many things you need to know about taking dogs out to eat.

Not all restaurants with patios are dog friendly. They are either certified dog friendly or they are not. Regardless it is always best to call a restaurant and ask if it is ok to bring your furry friend. You never know if the patio is booked for a party.

It is always BEST to dine out with dogs at off times to avoid other people and other dogs. Not all people like dogs and some are allergic to dogs. Other dogs enjoy barking at each other and you could be asked to leave. Avoid problems and dine at off times.

Do you know that most food and drink that you consume could be harmful and even toxic to your dog? Educate yourself and get a list of foods to avoid from your veterinarian. Usually a small piece of lean sauce free meat can be a safe bet. Bring a water bowl for your furry friend.

Here in Arizona we have to be aware that our dogs are not as heat tolerant as us. They can’t sweat and are always wearing a fur coat. They also absorb heat up their paws…. Just like people all dogs do have different levels of tolerance for heat. Not always but usually 90 degrees F and up is too hot to dine out with dogs. Keep it 90 or below in shade. When there is any doubt leave your best friend home.

There are some rules for dining out with dogs. Dogs must be by your side at all times. Dogs are NOT to sit on restaurant furniture. Dog are not to eat off restaurant plates.

Our first stop was Phila-Deli in Glendale/Arrowhead/#UpperWestSide. They are a casual sandwich shop that offers cheesesteaks, hoagies, salads and more. The nice people there offered my dogs water and some meat scraps. I said we didn’t need them today but they were extra nice and set a BIG bowl of water down for my dogs.

My husband got a large cheesesteak today with extra cheese and tomato sauce on the side.

I got a salad and already removed a lot of chicken for my dogs.

Chicken makes dogs happy. I think it’s a pretty nice salad for only $7.50 (+.75cents for avocado)

We regularly go to Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery in North Phoenix. They are a Pho -Free Vietnamese Restaurant that offers most of your Vietnamese favorites except for pho. They are called Banh Mi Bistro V. E. because they offer around a dozen different Banh Mi baguette sandwiches. All the food is always delicious. They also give out very large portions and everything is $10 and mostly LESS! They used to offer out door tables but were told to remove the tables because they are not zoned for outdoor dining. We use a folding table here.

Today my husband got the grilled pork rice plate.

You can also see how it taste.

I got the curry chicken with rice today.

We always enjoy going to Banh Mi Bistro in North Phoenix.

The Bourbon Cellar is located in North Scottsdale. They are a small steak and seafood house but also offer some of the most amazing ground in house burgers ever! They offer seating indoors but have a unique lush water feature lined dog friendly patio.

Our server was very nice to our dogs and brought each dog a bowl of water.

We decided to start out by sharing the macaroni and cheese appetizer.

It’s very cheesy with lots of sauce. It took a little while but it was worth waiting for. My dogs also enjoyed some.

We took most of it home so we’d have room for the amazing burgers.

Here’s my husband’s fresh ground filet mignon burger with bacon, cheese and onions and a side of onion rings.

I got mine with a side of fresh made to order crunchy cole slaw and my burger was topped with onion rings and bourbon pickles.

It’s a really delicious burger. I think it’s the best one that I have tasted anywhere. It’s also very large so I cut mine in half and my dogs ate the other half.

The Bourbon Cellar was a really great choice today.

www.TheBourbonCellar.com

Next we were off to Cucina Tagliani in Glendale/Arrowhead/#UpperWestSide.

Cucina Tagliani is an American-Italian Restaurant that is also offering some steak and rib specials lately.

Today I got my usual strawberry chicken salad. The strawberries are always extra good and the dressing is delicious.

My husband got a Stromboli.

My dogs always enjoy all the visits to Cucina Tagliani.

That was dining out with dogs in metro Phoenix. We hope that you’ve enjoyed and we hope to see you next month.

My Trip to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Scottsdale Arizona – Very Ordinary but Extraordinary priced

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse is located in Scottsdale Arizona. They have around one hundred and forty locations in around thirty seven states. Menus, some recipes and some prices do differ at the different locations.

The Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Scottsdale Arizona is located on a second level above other businesses. You enter by either walking up the stairs or taking the elevator. They offer indoor seating.

And outdoor seating.

They start you off with a loaf of warm ordinary bread and ordinary butter. (My FORKING Thoughts are can’t they serve a tastier bread? and at least clip some fresh chives for the butter….maybe serve a fresh herb pesto????? This is going to cost an arm and a leg….Why is this is soOoooooo ordinary?)

The bread is ok but not tasty enough to want a second taste. The butter is just plain butter.

When I go to similar price point restaurants going out to eat I usually get bread that is more like this (pictured bellow). (those were my FORKING thoughts)

Twist by Pierre Gagnaire at Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas

or

L’ATELIER de Joel Robuchon Las Vegas
Ruth’s Chris Bread and Butter

Oh Well the bread and butter are ordinary …lets move on.

Next we share a chopped salad.

It’s presented very nice. The crisp onions are tasty. This salad contains raw button mushrooms. Maybe it’s just me but raw mushrooms don’t taste good in a salad. This salad is bland. It’s like made for blue hairs in Sun City. It’s suppose to have blue cheese in it. I think we shared one small crumb of blue cheese…………( I think it should have a few teaspoons of blue cheese not just a small crumb). (My husband insist that this same salad at other Ruth’s Chris locations are much tastier and do include more blue cheese???……I’ve noticed that other locations do have different ingredients listed on the menu )……Oh well………

We share some sides because we are at a steakhouse so you have to buy the sides.

We tried the three cheese sauce potatoes au gratin and the grilled asparagus with hollandaise sauce.

The potatoes are ok but very ordinary. Like something you’d get at a family cook out. They are a smaller amount than expected. I took two chunks so my husband could eat the rest. The asparagus was tasty and nicely grilled. The asparagus might have been the highlight of the meal. The hollandaise sauce seemed fresh made but was very thick, laced with lemon and very mild.

My husband got the eleven ounce prime filet mignon.

$53.00

It came out on a very hot plate. My husband gives me a bite to try. It’s tender but I can’t eat this. It’s oddly tasteless. The beef is not flavorful and is so ordinary tasting and very bland. It really needs salt and pepper too. I don’t know why this filet is tasteless….It’s of high quality……Maybe they didn’t sear it enough???????…….I just had a ground up prime filet somewhere else and it was far more flavorful and cost less than half of what this cost. The last Filet I had also was far more flavorful, detailed and delicious, (pictured below) and also cost much less. (my husband did say that he has enjoyed filets from other Ruth Chris’s Restaurants…to him this one did differ….)

Twist Bistro & Gallery – Harris Ranch Tenderloin, fresh herbs, grilled artichoke, confit tomato, garlic mashed potatoes, braised greens, cabernet jus, aioli $31.50

I THANK my lucky stars that I didn’t go with a filet at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

The Chilean sea bass almost seems amazing after tasting the filet.

$40.

It looks like a large portion and it is enough but not as large as it looks. It is placed on a very small plate. (They are tricky here) This is a standard restaurant side plate….Like the type of plate you would serve a baked potato on or a side of vegetables. The fish is surrounded by small chunks of hard sweet potato and grilled chunks of pineapple in a coconut butter sauce. The fish is prepared well and is tasty with the fresh herbs, salt and pepper. This plate was mostly ok even with the undercooked sweet potatoes. For $40 I think it could have been a little more special. Maybe dressed with a nice vegetable like a few snap peas? A few pretty sprouts? Some toasted macadamia nuts?

For the same price I enjoyed many extraordinary fish entrees from Confluence in Carefree. (They always do fish extraordinary with crispy seasoned skin that is shattering crisp and extraordinary things surrounding the plate).

Hiramasa, huitlacoche, tomatillo, mango, pepitas, arbol chili

The above plate is far superior to-

This was a $300. night out (with tip).

In general there is nothing wrong with ordinary. I expect ordinary at most places but –

……Dinner tasted very ordinary (but was extraordinarily priced).

I left very underwhelmed.

We went to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse because we had a gift card.

I do note that each location does differ and your experience at Scottsdale could indeed differ.

Ocho Rios Jerk Spot Phoenix AZ – 1st Taste and Worth a Fork!

Ocho Rios Jerk Spot is a Caribbean Restaurant located in an older strip mall in Phoenix Arizona. They offer Jamaican patties, wings, salads, cocktails various Jamaican entrees and more.

They do have a patio but it doesn’t appear to be in use.

Inside is a dining room and a bar.

Today we did take out.

We tried a variety of things. We tried small sized a la carte escovitch snapper, a la carte brown stew chicken, a la carte curry chicken, s/o macaroni and cheese, cocoa bread and a jerk chicken entree with rice and peas, cabbage and festival bread.

All the chicken dishes we ordered were dark meat that was developed with flavors and falling off the bone tender. The curry chicken and the brown stew chicken was very similar to others that I have tried. Very good and similar familiar flavors. The escovitch snapper also had very good flavor. Don’t remember having cocoa bread before but it was good and seemed fresh. It was slightly sweet. The macaroni and cheese was a homestyle kind……a little soft with the noodles but it was very cheesy. I do find that each restaurant has their own unique recipe for jerk chicken. This one is among the best that I’ve tried. It’s very flavorful and very tender. I had my choice of sauce that comes with it. I think? the choices were something like mild, bbq or hot…We picked hot and it was HOT but not nuclear with a nice fruity taste. I thought it was really great!

I have to say…….First taste at Ocho Rios Jerk Spot was….

The Bourbon Cellar in North Scottsdale makes a Forking Amazing Ground In House Prime Filet Burger

The Bourbon Cellar is a small independent steak and seafood restaurant in North Scottsdale Arizona. The owner is also the chef and does the in house butchering. Inside is sort of rustic with lots of wood, bricks, bourbon barrels and American Flags.

Outside is a lush dog friendly patio with a water feature.

I’m not a burger person…Most burgers are just food that is very filling. A few are tasty out there and some burgers out there are of a higher quality……..but none are like The Bourbon Cellar’s Prime Filet Ground in House Burger……..I’ve been here several times and I just can’t get past the ground-in-house prime filet burger. This burger is different.

Here is a closer look. All beef does taste different. Especially ground beef. Commercial ground beef just isn’t up there with ground in house beef. Commercial beef is much gamier tasting…..with a slight sourness to it. It’s that dead cow taste….I know it because I used to cook up a few hundred pounds of beef when I was a cook. It does smell like a dead cow. Ground in house beef is a cleaner taste and doesn’t smell as bad at home when you grind your own beef.

It is an amazing big burger so I cut it in half and remove the toppings.

This burger is great but it isn’t cheap and might run you more than most burgers you eat. The bourbon pickles that I added (90cents) and onion ring topping (90cents) are really great. The onions rings are super great because they are shattering crisp and the onion doesn’t pull out when you bite into it. But it is the burger that is the main event here. It’s seasoned to perfection. I think “medium” is perfect here….medium rare would be too much raw meat. It’s like eating a really great steak. It’s so flavorful. I think it’s maybe the best tasting burger that I have ever tried. It’s so good that it shouldn’t be covered up with stuff. I love stuff….but then it covers up this amazing burger. You really have to eat it open face…It’s that good.

My dogs are always happy to help me with the other half.

Even the cole slaw was good. It was made fresh to order and came out after my burger.

It was very crisp and fresh.

We tried one different thing off the menu and went for the macaroni and cheese appetizer.

This was made fresh to order and did take some time but it is a perfect mix of cheesy and creamy. (Gave my dogs some too)

Restaurants in Metro Phoenix for Black History Month that I can personally recommend

Today I am mentioning the black owned restaurants that I can personally recommend. I do note that I haven’t been everywhere in metro Phoenix so other great black owned restaurants are out there that you should want to visit too. The restaurants mentioned are not in any particular order.

I had dishes that were to die for from The Larder + The Delta in Downtown Phoenix.

It’s a cute little casual restaurant in Phoenix that offers high quality Southern American Inspired Modern Cuisine.

This Hoppin John is like no other. It’s FORKING SCRUMPTIOUS! It’s earthy, spicy, deeply flavorful with interesting textures. It’s a Hum-YUM-Dinger!

A LONG While back I had the very best of the hot chicken sandwiches that I have tried anywhere. It was like a religious experience.

I had many delicious hot chicken sandwiches before but this one had the best and most delicious flavors of any hot chicken sandwich that I’ve ever had. One thing that really stood out was that the chicken was the only one that still tasted like it was on the bone. Then this one also had many layers to it that were the most delicious. It was so amazing that I wonder why this sandwich isn’t often found on the menu.

During the pandemic The Larder + The Delta did hot chicken take out.

They did re-opened for dine in service but these are uncertain times so you must contact them for up to date details.

I only got to eat at Mingo’s Louisiana Kitchen once (because this place is pretty far for me) but everything we tried was delicious. My husband said that the red beans and rice were really great. He usually only eats this dish in New Orleans…because usually it is usually only good in New Orleans.

He also enjoyed the Shrimp Po Boy.

Hot Chicken Sandwich

I had some sort of hot chicken sandwich that was different but delicious. If I remember correctly I think it was made with his own hot sauce and specialty remoulade sauce. The fries were seasoned with Old Bay.

Currently Mingo’s Louisiana Kitchen operates out of a food truck so you have to look up their schedule.

At a food festival in Peoria (Devour The World) I enjoyed the food from Abyssinia Restaurant and Cafe very much.

I decided that I should try the Ethiopian Restaurant Abyssinia Restaurant and Cafe myself. (PHX)

We got a couple dishes on one large platter lined with injera bread and served with rolls of it. Everything was DELICIOUS! There were three kinds of lentil dishes, vegetable dishes…..a couple meat dishes and in the middle was this insanely delicious dish called Doro Wat. It was a great experience.

We enjoyed many dishes from Carribbean Cuisine in Glendale. I do note that this is a very small place that is mainly open for take out. (possibly only take out during the pandemic)

Red Snapper

Jerk chicken

Curry chicken

Oxtail (not always ready because this takes hours to prepare)

Escoviitch

Everything was delicious from Caribbean Cuisine.

We enjoy Desert Island Eatery and Cafe very much. This is a Caribbean Restaurant that also serves Vegan foods. Inside is only three tables but they recently added a patio. Currently during the pandemic they are Take Out only and the patio is not in use.

Our mutual favorite dish here is the Curry/Jerk Chicken combo that comes with cabbage and your choice of rice and peas or yellow rice.

Combo with Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken

We are both crazy about this curry and jerk chicken. Many other people in town love it too and this restaurant has been expanding the menu and their hours.

D’s Jerk Hut recently opened in Phoenix. They offer Caribbean and some vegan foods sort of cafeteria style. It’s sort of like a buffet behind the cashier and your order is kept warm in a warming oven.

We tried a number of things there.

Above is small sized jerk chicken and curry chicken. The jerk chicken his less spiced and less hot than all the other jerk chickens that I’ve tried. I really liked the curry chicken here. It was very flavorful and falling off the bone.

Here’s medium sized brown strew chicken. It’s very flavorful and really good but this one gets the developed flavor from the bones and there are lots of bone fragments in it.

D’s Jerk Hut is the only place that I have found Jamaica’s national dish Ackee (a fruit) and Salt Fish. It’s VERY Unique….You have to go to D’s Jerk Hut to try it.

The Breadfruit and Rum Bar is another place for Jerk Chicken and other Caribbean foods.

Friday night jerk chicken for two special from The Breadfruit & Rum Bar in Phoenix

We’ve enjoyed numerous dishes from the Breadfruit and Rum Bar from Festivals that we’ve been to. Often The Breadfruit and Rum Bar served us our favorite bite from various food festivals. Each Jerk Chicken that I tried taste different and the jerk chicken here is also very unique. Ours that we took out was more breast meat with all kinds of flavors that danced on the exterior of the chicken. There also was this WICKED mighty nuclear HOT sauce to pour onto it (If you dare). Ours came with nicely prepared farm fresh vegetables.

These were the Black Owned restaurants that I can recommend personally recommend.

The Larder + The Delta (PHX)

Mingo’s Louisiana Kitchen (Food Truck)

Abyssinia Restaurant and Cafe (PHX)

Caribbean Cuisine (Glendale)

Desert Island Eatery (N.PHX)

D’s Jerk Hut (PHX)

The Breadfruit and Rum Bar (PHX)

Again I haven’t been everywhere and I know that there are other great ones out there.

Everything is subject to change and we hope it does for the better.

Dining Out With DOGS in Metro Phoenix AZ January 2021 – Bottega Pizzeria Ristorante, Oscar’s Pier 83, Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery

Dining out with dogs in metro Phoenix Arizona is just a “Fluff” story about taking my dogs out to eat. It all sort of started when my dog Louie was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. They told us that he was only expected to live three more months and up to 6 at the most. Louie already was old and couldn’t do a lot but he always enjoyed eating and going out to eat so I took him out as often as I could and instead of the 3-6 months Louie made it another 17 months. Today I take my current dogs out to eat when I can.

There are some things that you need to know if you dine out with dogs. Not all restaurant patios are dog friendly. You need to see a sign or license posted that the restaurant is dog friendly….

If you don’t see a sign then you need to call and ask the restaurant if you can bring your furry friend.

From experience I highly recommend that you dine out with your dog at off times to avoid possible problems. Some people just don’t like dogs and other people are allergic. It’s best to avoid other dogs too because dogs enjoy barking at each other and that might be considered to be a disturbance and you could be asked to leave.

You need to know that dogs must be by your side at all times. Dogs are NOT to sit on restaurant furniture and dogs are NOT to eat off restaurant plates.

Did you know that most food and drink that you consume can be harmful or even TOXIC to your dog? You must get a list of safe foods and foods to avoid from your veterinarian. You also need to be aware that your dog is NOT as heat tolerant as you are. Dogs wear a fur coat all the time and absorb heat up their paws. They also can’t sweat. All dogs do differ just like people but in general 90 degrees F is too hot to dine out with dogs. Maybe some dogs can take 90 degrees or less but only in shade.

Our first destination this month is Bottega Pizzeria Ristorante. They are an Italian restaurant that specializes in serving Neapolitan Pizzas, House made pastas, Italian foods, seasonal specials and more. They also have a comfortable all weather dog friendly patio with misters and shades for cooling. They also have portable heaters for those few chilly days and an indoor outdoor bar with a TV for other people.

The patio has a nice park-like atmosphere.

Our nice server brings water for the dogs.

Then we get some fresh baked breads.

I get the seasonal special of Chicken piccata. I had a small side salad with it that I forgot to photo.

The chicken is intense with lemon. It really doesn’t taste like other chicken piccata dishes that I have had. They tell me that the food here is authentic Italian and the chef and pizza maker are both from Italy.

My husband gets the Bottega Pizza (sausage and pepperoni).

My dogs are pretty happy to be getting lots of chicken.

www.BottegaRistorante.com

Next we went to Oscar’s Pier 83 in Glendale/Arrowhead/#UpperWestSide.

They have a nice comfortable patio that is nicely spaced with large comfortable tables. They also have some new outside shades too.

My husband got fried cod, oysters and shrimp.

I got the cajun catfish with added vegetables.

To my surprise the dogs enjoyed squash and zucchini very much. They also got to eat fish but I had to be extra careful on what I fed them because there was a lot of cajun seasoning on the fish that contains onion and garlic that is very bad for dogs. I cut both sides of seasoning off the fish so the dogs could have some. The fish was very crispy…much crispier than it normally is here. With all the seasoning it was hard to tell that it was catfish but it seemed fresh.

www.OP83.com

We love going to Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery in North Phoenix. They offer most of your favorite Vietnamese dishes except for pho.

Today my husband had a shaken beef Banh Mi baguette sandwich. (the beef is always REALLY great here….to me it is like filet mignon but I know that it is rib eye)

I got a noodle bowl….

It’s BIG and everything here is delicious! I got a BIG bowl of rice noodles topped with minty herby salad, marinated seasoned chicken with crushed peanut and fried shallots, (my husband accidentally got me tofu too that is very tasty) a crispy egg roll, fish sauce for dipping and chili paste. Both meals could be two meals for some people. I got plenty to share.

www.BanhMiBistroAZ.com

My lucky dogs got to revisit Bottega Pizzeria Ristorante in Glendale again.

We all got to see the NEW expanded patio.

Today they started us off with a complimentary basket of fresh baked focaccia and a bowl of water for my VIPS ( Very Important Pups) My husband got the sausage special with a choice of fresh hand made pasta (he picked trofie)

I got the strawberry chicken salad.

We all enjoyed our visit to Bottega Pizzeria Ristorante!

That was dining out with Dogs in Metro Phoenix for January 2021.

This month we visited –

Oscar’s Pier 83 – Glendale/Arrowhead/#UpperWestSide

Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery – North Phoenix

We hope to see you next month!

Metro Phoenix AZ Restaurants Can Inspire YOUR Cooking

There are many great dishes to try from many metro Phoenix Restaurants. Some might inspire you to try to do a copy cat version. Here are some that inspired me. They are listed in no particular order.

Miso eggplant with bonito flakes and crisp enoki mushrooms

This miso eggplant with bonito flakes and crisp enoki mushrooms and peanuts was inspired from one of my visits to Confluence in Carefree AZ.

Reathrey Sekong is a Cambodian Restaurant that I have been to a few times in Phoenix. They make a Cambodian flavor paste to flavor some of the dishes and did it on video for our local newspaper. I watched and took notes. A combination of turmeric, lime leaves, lemon grass, galangal, shallots and garlic makes Cha Kreung Paste and that is what I used to flavor the above vegetables.

Ethiopian Style Chicken Stew

I went to Abyssinia Restaurant and Cafe in Phoenix. The Doro Wat Chicken was so delicious I had to find out on how to make it.

Flat Bread with Blue Cheese Butter and Pistou Inspired from Eddie’s house of Scottsdale AZ

Eddie’s House in Scottsdale is no longer in business but part of the complimentary bread basket inspired me to make a flat bread with blue cheese butter and pistou.

Smoked beets, goat cheese mousse, oranges, pea sprouts, almonds, mint, orange champagne vinaigrette

At Angel’s Trumpet Ale House in Phoenix I had this amazing salad that inspired me to do the above plate with the majority of ingredients that were in the salad. Up above are smoked beets, goat cheese mousse, oranges, pea sprouts, almonds, mint and orange champagne vinaigrette.

Spaghetti Squash with Harissa Vinaigrette

We enjoyed spaghetti squash with harissa from FnB in Scottsdale so I made something similar.

No Pasta Squash Manicotti

We often dine at Bottega Pizzeria Ristorante and one special they had was a squash wrapped manicotti. I thought that was a good idea and made up my own ricotta cheese and did the same.

Melon with Preserved Lemon, Lavender and Cream Cheese

The most memorable plate I tried from The Vic Bar & Grill in Buckeye was a melon salad with preserved lemon and lavender.

Reduced Fat Potato Green Pepper & Eggplant

Miu’s Cuisine was one of the best Chinese Restaurants. They had this dish with potatoes, green peppers, eggplant and black garlic that was so delicious. I attempted a reduced fat version.

Roasted then Fried Rutabaga topped with oven fried Lotus Chip

We enjoyed the Gilfeather Rutabaga from FnB in Scottsdale. I purchased the same rutabagas from the Scottsdale Farmers Market and did something similar. (should have used more chives)

Spicy Vegetarian Cauliflower Meatballs in Spicy Butternut Squash Indian Spiced Sauce

I really enjoyed the spicy cauliflower meatballs from Meat The Ball in Scottsdale. Sadly Meat The Ball is no longer in business but I still remember several of the meatballs I tried.

Indian Inspired Green Beans and Chickpeas

Even food from a buffet can inspire. There used to be an Indian buffet and restaurant called Mayuri Palace in Phoenix. I tried an okra dish that was marked kauai bhindi masala and gosh it was amazing. At the. time I was unable to find a similar recipe. Somehow I came up with this Indian inspired green beans with chick peas. I know it came out pretty good because this recipe has been featured in an Indian on-line publication and rates 5 stars on a certain recipe site.

Pickled Beet Israeli Couscous and Harissa Vinagrete

This pickled beet, Israeli couscous with harissa vinaigrette was inspired by a plate I enjoyed from Atlas Bistro in Scottsdale.

Focaccia di Recco

I tasted this AMAZING Focaccia di Recco at Pomo Pizzeria. This I didn’t know how to make so I followed Mary Ann Esposito’s recipe. Mine didn’t come out quite as amazing as Pomo’s but still was very tasty.

Brazilian Inspired Potato Salad

The Brazilian potato salad was really delicious from Carvalho’s in North Scottsdale. It’s different…Looks very creamy but the creaminess is made by over cooking the potatoes. Can’t get it there anymore because they are closed for business.

Indian Inspired Beets

I really enjoyed the beets poriyal from Vaigai that used to be open in Glendale. I looked up a recipe for them and they came out close.

Baked Asian Seasoned Broccoli and Cauliflower Bites

The bang bang broccoli from The Larry in Phoenix was SUPER tasty. I had to make something similar and I did!

Forking EPIC Guacamole

Thanks to my visits to The Barrio Grand Reserva (no longer in business) I was inspired to make this AMAZING guacamole. I learned some secrets there that I never would have came up with unless I tasted The Barrio Grand Reserva’s amazing food. This isn’t a copy of their guacamole but does copy some of the superb things I tried there. Some secret ingredients are Asain pears, chitepin peppers, home made pickled caccabella peppers and SEAWEED.

Matbucha

We used to have a very above average Mediterranean Israeli Style restaurant called Zabari Mediterranean Grill in Phoenix. One ultra memorable food item from that restaurant was a cold tomato sort of salsa called Matbucha. OMG it was so delicious I had to learn how to make it. I did a lot of research and I was able to figure a recipe that taste similar. This stuff is really great and I have no idea why this food isn’t main stream. I bet I could make a living just selling this.

Latin Inspired Red Lentils, Rainbow Chard, Dates and Almonds

From a visit to Deseo Nation Restaurant in Scottsdale we enjoyed this side order that was delicious. My version of it was made of red lentils, rainbow chard, dates and almonds.

Eggplant Caponata

Tasted an amazing eggplant caponata from Stratta Kitchen in Scottsdale. Always thought that I didn’t like eggplant caponata till I tasted the one that Stratta Kitchen serves. Made my own and it is awesome……(Thinking that most people don’t correctly cook the eggplant or study on how to make it right)

Burmese Style turkey soup

At FiGaMi Asian Fresh Restaurant in Phoenix I got an amazing Burmese Style Fish Soup. I had home made turkey stock at home and did something similar after I looked up on how to make Burmese Style Soup. (P.S. I went back to FiGaMi Asian Fresh for the same soup and it was different second time around)

Crisp radishes and capers in an anchovy caper dressing

We enjoyed a radish, caper and anchovy caper dressing salad from FnB in Scottsdale. My radishes were not as special but I did a pretty good job copy catting.

Those were some of my inspirations from Metro Phoenix Restaurants. I wonder what restaurant will inspire me next?
