Forking Dining with Dogs at Leo’s Island BBQ Peoria AZ November 2015

IMG_0586

We recently went to Leo’s Island BBQ in Peoria AZ. Leo’s Island BBQ is located in the Arrowhead Shopping area across the street from the mall. This is one of the only locally owned restaurants in the immediate area. This is a small fast casual restaurant that serves up the Hawaiian Plate lunch. You have around forking thirty choices to pick from with the average price running around $8.00 a plate. The styrofoam packages are filled with enormous amounts of meat that rest on some steamed vegetables (mostly cabbage), a double scoop of rice, creamy macaroni salad.

Me and my dogs had the Chicken and Rib Combo Plate.

“I’m just sweet and I wait my turn.”

IMG_0590

“Good choice, we can forking eat till we burst.” “This place is forking great.”

"The closer you are to the food the forking more you get!"

“That other dog is cute but doesn’t know that the closer you are to the food the forking more  food you forking get!”

I got two short ribs, TONS of crispy breaded white meat chicken and TONS of boneless dark meat bbq chicken. Everything tasted fresh and all the was tender and tasty. This is all fresh made food. The sauces are prepared in house and the chicken is natural chicken. The macaroni salad is very creamy and a little dap of Korean hot sauce makes it very tasty.

Both dogs were very happy. Even with my two helpers and my husband helping himself to some this meal is still to massive to finish.

My husband got the Spam Loco Moco.

IMG_0592

It was maybe a half dozen slices of grilled spam topped with two fried eggs and lots of gravy.

Go to Leo’s Island BBQ and bring your appetite and wear loose jeans.

New Asian Kitchen in Phoenix AZ- Take Out Chinese That’s Worth a Fork

IMG_0476

New Asian Kitchen is a small Chinese Restaurant located in an older strip mall in Phoenix AZ. For my taste this is the forking BEST small independent Chinese Restaurant in a several mile radius of it’s kind. They offer a variety of Mostly American Chinese Favorites, Cantonese Style, Mandarin Style, Szechwan Style and Mongolian Style dishes.

I haven’t found any of the other nearby Chinese Restaurants offering foods packed with so many fresh vegetables. Or food layered with so many flavors. I’ve been coming here for years and the chicken 100% of the time is always tasty and moist. I usually eat only chicken but I also note anytime we had a meat other than chicken it was also prepared well.

The majority of Chinese Take Out Restaurant do not have the Cantonese Dry Sautéed Beef Chow Fun on their menu. That is because that dish is considered a major test for Cantonese Cooks for their cooking. I’m NOT a big fan of beef personally but I do enjoy the Cantonese Dry Sautéed Beef Chow Fun from New Asian Kitchen. It is FORKING delicious and made with melt in your mouth buttery beef that’s very tasty. It’s among the best beef dishes I had at any Chinese Restaurant.

Dry Sautéed Beef Chow Fun

Dry Sautéed Beef Chow Fun

I don’t have a good photo of the Curry Chicken but it’s the only Curry Chicken that taste like what I was told was authentic Chicken Curry when I vacationed in Hawaii. In Hawaii I went on a food tour and an Asian Person made a point of having us taste Chicken Curry. She told us that this is what authentic Chinese Chicken curry should taste like and New Asian’s is just like it.

The killer dish that New Asian Prepares is the Szechuan Chicken.

Szechuan Chicken

Szechuan Chicken

You’re not not going to find anyone anywhere that prepares this dish this way but this dish is absolutely amazing. It’s a flavor BOMB! Not for wimps or little ones. The sauce is spicy and layered with many flavors. You also get a variety of many fresh vegetables of different textures and flavors that turn into magic in your mouth. It’s just a treat!

Some dishes do shine more than others but I never had a bad dish here.

Spicy Pineapple Chicken

Spicy Pineapple Chicken

The spicy pineapple Chicken is a very large portion and can feed three people. The white meat chicken is flavorful and moist. I really liked the fresh pineapple in this dish. The sauce was more savory than sweet with lots of pleasing flavors and it’s spicy. I would have liked the chicken a little more crispy  like they prepare it back east but the sauce was so yummy I don’t care. This dish seems like a grown up more sophisticated version of the American Favorite orange chicken.

A few of the other dishes we had at New Asian Kitchen were………

Kung Pao Delight

General Tso’s Chicken is spicier and not as sweet as from most places.

Not spicy but very mushroomy. Not as layered in flavors but still very tasty.

Moo Goo Gai Pan

Tastiest Moo Goo Gai Pan I ever had!

House Wor Wonton Soup

The Chicken Corn Soup is also really delicious don’t have a photo here.

Mongolian Beef

Yui Shan Chicken

I often get the Yui Shan Eggplant. It’s just a really delicious eggplant dish. I just wish it had a tofu or chicken option.

The Szechuan Chicken is just so forking good I have to mention it again. It’s their “Killer Dish.” It might be worth taking a drive for……..It’s very unique….didn’t seem like authentic Szechwan but way more delicious than than any other Szechuan American Style chicken I had before.

The service is always fantastic. Portions are very large and prices are very low. It’s not a fancy place but it seems clean.

Angelina’s Pho & Grill of Glendale AZ – Is Worth a Fork

The Chicken and Asparagus Salad from Angelina's Pho & Grill Glendale AZ

The Chicken and Asparagus Salad from Angelina’s Pho & Grill Glendale AZ

This is a small sleek and modern Asian Restaurant located in a strip mall with an outdoor patio. It’s hard to do a review on this restaurant because they make changes to the menu often.

Angelina’s opened up a few years back as a Vietnamese Restaurant. In the opening weeks they had some problems with service and Pho dishes weren’t being served with the correct condiments possibly due to service and management.

Angelina’s has come a long LONG way since then. At this time you can still get a variety of Pho, Pho like dishes, Thai Style Curries, Stir Fries, Beef Tenderloins, Salmon Consommé, weekend sushi, a bar and much much more.

I think one of the tastiest meals I had in all of Glendale recently was the Chicken and Asparagus Salad from Angelina’s. The dark meat Chicken was moist, infused with flavors and brushed with an exotic sauce. The salad was made with fresh crisp vegetables, grilled asparagus and crisp noodles. I think the clear sauce was fish sauce to use as a dip for the chicken but I never tasted fish sauce that was so layered with flavors before. The white sauce for the salad was also mysteriously delicious. I forking don’t know what it was but it was so good they should sell it. This salad is one of the most delicious dishes you can find in Glendale. I know a salad like this would cost $12-$14. in Scottsdale. I hope the menu isn’t a misprint because Angelina’s was only charging $7.09 for this great salad. I note I would still be happy with this salad if it cost more.

Luc Lac Beef

Luc Lac Beef

The Luc Lac Beef is flavorful moist and tender beef tenderloin. It was delicious and at the time was priced at $15.00. This dish was delicious, I think anyone would forking like this dish.

Green Curry Chicken

Green Curry Chicken

The Green Curry Chicken was made with tender chicken and a whole bushel of vegetables in an aromatic spicy sauce.

Yellowtail Sashimi

Yellowtail Sashimi

Angelina’s offers Thursday-Sunday Yumi Sushi. It’s among the best and freshest sushi you can find in Glendale as it never get old and forking gross.

Yumi Signature Roll

Yumi Signature Roll

I don’t know of any other Asian Restaurant that serves an Asian Salmon Consommé.

Salmon Consommé with fresh dill

Salmon Consommé with fresh dill

This dish I had a while back but I still remember how fresh the salmon tasted and it just melted in my mouth. This dish was very fragrant and unique. It was like an inspiration of Vietnamese, Thai and French all in one.

Hot and Spicy

Hot and Spicy

My husband had this one. It was something like Pho but with a twist and was spicy. My husband almost always orders the Pho and pho like dishes here because it’s his favorite from the Vietnamese Restaurants we tried. It’s never watery and seasoned so well you don’t really have to add the sauces to the pho to get the right taste. I’ve had beef pho here it a long time back from here and all I remember is that it was a more intense of a beef flavor than other pho’s I tried. It seemed richer and the beef was tastier.

Yellow Curry Chicken

Yellow Curry Chicken

This might have been the best Yellow Curry I ever had. I still remember that it was very infused with Thai Basil and the chicken here is excellent. This dish also had an unusually large varied amount of vegetables in it including cauliflower, green beans, bok choy, and several other vegetables.

Rare Beef and Brisket Pho

Rare Beef and Brisket Pho

Tasty fresh beef in a rich aromatic beef broth.

Chicken Pho

Chicken Pho

The Chicken is always good in any dish you pick at Angelina’s. I’ve had Chicken Pho at other Vietnamese Restaurants in the area and none of them were close to as good as the way Angelina’s makes it. It wasn’t lacking in chicken taste and the chicken in the bowl was moist and flavorful and an extra generous portion.

I’e been going to Angelina’s for years. The food has always been good. They always offer dishes you won’t find at other Vietnamese Restaurants like the La Vong Style Alaskan Cod in Turmeric and fresh dill, the menu is always changing, pricing is reasonable (I don’t think anything is over $15.00). The atmosphere is stylish and modern.Patio seating is available. I do note service is usually good but a few times it was a miss just like most restaurants.

Atlas Bistro in Scottsdale AZ is Certainly Worth a Fork

Amuse Bouche of Hawaiian House Smoked Fish with Caper and Lemon

Amuse Bouche of Hawaiian Opah House Smoked Fish

Atlas Bistro is a small but upscale restaurant located in an older strip mall in Scottsdale AZ. This little ten table restaurant is also a B.Y.O.B. and is adjacent to a fine wine store next door. Different chefs have worked here over the years and all of them have gone on to open some of the greatest restaurants in the metro phoenix area. All the meals I had here were all exquisite, very detailed, masterfully prepared and exciting.

This happened to be Arizona Restaurant Week and we were getting a lovely three course meal for $44.00 each. They started us off with an amuse bouche of house smoked Hawaiian Fish with a caper and lemon aioli. It was just delicious and would be forking awesome on a bagel with cream cheese. I wished I could purchase some to go!

My first course was easy on the eyes and very easy to put away in my stomach.

IMG_9761

Cucumber, sweet crisp watermelon, Israeli Feta, jicama, pickled honeydew, pistachios, and a watermelon/lime vinaigrette. This was delicious and was one of the plates my husband kept trying because it was so DARN likable. All the flavors and textures were exciting and so refreshing. The cucumber was so crisp and sweet, the pickled honeydew added light acid and the creamy very mild Israeli Feta just melted everything together. Anyone would love this dish as it was forking delicious. I never came across Israeli Feta before it wasn’t too salty or tangy like some feta cheeses are, and was much more creamy than the average feta.

My second course was also well orchestrated.

IMG_9766

Golden beets that were so moist, soft and naturally sweet and obviously just picked, with creamy pungent blue cheese, fennel for brightness, onion brûlée, Swiss chard, crisp rye berries, a couple dabs of lightly smoked buttermilk and red beet vinaigrette. Another light and tasty earthy dish that’s full of lots of detail.

Then came dinner.

IMG_9772

Exotic Wild Hawaiian Hebi Spearfish, beet cous cous, za’atar shitakes, asparagus, braised leeks, harissa, charred radicchio and saffron corn puree. This was all delicious and painstakingly detailed. But I had to fight my husband’s fork from taking too much of the amazing cous cous. The cous cous had the most exciting flavor of everything on the plate and outshined the perfectly prepared and seasoned fish. I never imagined cous cous could be so exciting. They were cooked with beets and that delicious mildly spicy, red peppery and the taste of caraway. It was just  so delicious. The shiitakes were also very tasty the way they were seasoned. I would have traded some of the bitter radicchio for another mushroom.

Unfortunately I was too full to even forking think about dessert.

One of the benefits of a B.Y.O.B. is also a low down because your wine won’t pair with all the entrees but if you drink your wine between dishes it doesn’t matter. At the time of this review 9-21-15 the corkage fee is $15.00 at Atlas Bistro.

Eddie’s House Scottsdale AZ is Worth a Fork ***UPDATE Now CLOSED for Business***

IMG_8733

When you enter Eddie’s House in Old Town Scottsdale AZ you’ll enter into a slightly different atmosphere than most other restaurants. It’s almost like walking into Eddie’s Real House because it’s decorated with many family photos and lots of personalized knick knacks. You’ll see many fishing items and also notice pictures of Eddie fishing that may also be representative of many of the assorted fish items offered on the menu.

In the metro Phoenix Area Eddie has been known as a celebrity chef and has made a lot of appearances on local TV. Eddie might know be considered a celebrity chef everywhere because of a recent award winning appearance on FoodNetwork’s TV Show Triple G-Guy’s Grocery Games where Eddie won the prize with his signature dish bacon infused meatloaf.

I’ve been to Eddie’s House a bunch of times over the years and always enjoy the complimentary blue cheese  butter with fresh herb pistou sauce with the fresh bread. That darn stuff is so delicious it’s very hard to stop eating it.

IMG_8504

We started with the grilled honey spiced chicken lollipops.

IMG_8501

The chicken is plump and juicy and very flavorful with a deep chicken flavor accented with sweet, salty and spices. The legs are very tasty and are very easy to eat the way the chicken has been cleaned up just right.

For dinner this time I ordered the half portion of the dinner named, what’s in this steak. (not all but many dinners are available in half portions)

IMG_8506

The name of this dish is as unusual as the presentation of the steak. It was a tasty tenderloin cooked to my liking wrapped in mashed potatoes with a crisp exterior.

IMG_8507

The steak was very tender and seasoned just right. The half portion was just the right amount of beef for me. The mashed potatoes had just a tad too much salt for me but were very yummy. Who the fork doesn’t like a yummy mashed potato and these had a tasty crust.

My husband had the bacon infused meatloaf. It was topped with crisp onion straws and was served with mashed potatoes. It was tasty and after all it’s an OFFICIAL Food Network Winning Dish!

IMG_8505

We also indulged in dessert as our server made the desserts sound so good and she was very excited about the white chocolate blueberry cheesecake so she talked us into it.

IMG_8508

I don’t always like cheesecake because some are too sour tasting to me. I also am not a fan of the dense style cheese cake but this one was good. Even my husband ate it and he usually hates cheesecakes.

An Overall Not Worth a FORK Dining Experience in Metro Phoenix AZ

Sort Rib Taco from Salt and Lime Restaurant Scottsdale AZ

Sort Rib Taco from Salt and Lime Modern Mexican Grill Scottsdale AZ

Mexican Food can be delicious and is usually made with various fresh herbs and lots of spices. This kind of food is not boring and certainly isn’t bland.

When I walked into this establishment besides nearly turning forking deaf from the blaring 70s hard rock anthem tunes, I could see by the patrons that the cuisine would not be authentic Mexican and would be some sort of Americanized Mexi Style kind of food. So I only had forking dreams of an average meal but soon my only average dreams turned to a mediocre experience.  We were quickly whisked to the dining room filled with tables and booths that were very close together and some members of our party were actually rubbing elbows with strangers. We soon receive a basket of half broken corn chips that weren’t oily…….. YIPPIE!………. I dipped a chip into the salsa. It was oddly tasteless. It seemed like a few key ingredients were missing from that batch of salsa. It seemed like the fresh cilantro, chilies, salt, garlic and fresh onions were hanging out with the missing Lindbergh Baby.

I thought it might be a good idea to share a pitcher of margaritas. I tasted my margarita and it was cloyingly sweet like hummingbird water and seemed to only had trace amounts of liquor in it if any. It made me go mmmmmmmm not a forking good idea.

Oddly someone was running around passing out tickets to win a forking beer logo floatation raft. It sort of reminded me of a forking circus. My number wasn’t called so I felt deflated and didn’t win the forking floatation raft.

The tacos were $2.00 off for happy hour so they seemed appealing to start out with as appetizers. Four of us were at the table and between us we tried five different tacos. Four out of the five tacos were made with dry undeveloped with flavor meats and seemed to lack similar taste that the salsa was missing. I had the Huachnanco Taco, that is a snapper taco.

excuse the forking poor photo but that’s the fork how it came out.

Salt and Lime Scottsdale AZ

Salt and Lime Modern Mexican Grill Scottsdale AZ

The fish didn’t seem over cooked like all the meat tacos but this taco didn’t have any delicious flavor to it either. You can see this taco lacks fresh cilantro and fresh scallions. This taco was loaded with a creamy sauce that lacked the cilantro flavor that the menu promiced and other good flavors it was suppose to have. You can’t tell by looking at the photo how the pickled onions taste. Usually pickled onions in a taco taste good. These onions tasted like straight vinegar. They lack the sweet to balance them out.  It’s a little hard to see but there are small chunks of pineapple in the taco. The pineapple lacked a fresh pineapple texture and taste. I don’t know for sure but they seemed like sweetened pineapples from a forking can. When I bit into this taco I couldn’t forking taste much more than plain vinegar that made my mouth hurt. that taco was very unbalanced in flavor.

I had the kale and mango salad for dinner with added salmon.

Salt and Lime Scottsdale AZ

Salt and Lime Modern Mexican Grill Scottsdale AZ

After the the not so good tacos (saying the forking least), weak sweet margaritas and not so good salsa I wanted to forking hate my salad but honestly it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great. While it wasn’t forking awful like everyone else’s meal but it was expensive for what I got. The salad does come in small and large so I asked the server the different in size so with her hands she makes like the small is a forking 4 inches big and with her hands like the large is a foot long so it makes me think I better get the forking large one that cost $18.75 with salmon. That’s a lot of forking money for a salad even for forking Scottsdale.  The kale was prepared nicely and cut in the right size pieces. Mango, red cabbage, jicama, avocado, queso fresco and pepitas all were a good combination in the salad and did taste good. I can’t forking bust them for bad tasting dressing because the orange lime vinaigrette dressing was mostly forking tasteless. I did get about two bites out of many over the course of two days (because it was forking gigantic and took the rest home) that were DELICIOUS because those couple bites had the orange taste. That leads me to believe the dressing might have not been mixed well and I only got the light stuff off the top of the batch of dressing with all the flavors settled on the bottom. I have to say my salmon was cooked perfect. It had a nice crust and was prepared medium-medium rare. The salmon it’s self was very good.

My husband tried the carnitas. Sorry for another forking poor photo, I wasn’t drunk I swear because I couldn’t choke down that forking margarita.

Salt and Lime Scottsdale AZ

Salt and Lime Modern Mexican Grill Scottsdale AZ

The carnitas were dry and not developed with flavor.

One person at the table had a vegetable burrito. I don’t know what was wrong with it but the Sr. Citizen that had it said, “it was mediocre at best”.  I didn’t forking question that.

Another person at the table had the carne asada fajita. I saw the meat and could see it looked forking dry and shriveled up like beef jerky. It’s too bad the cook that prepared it didn’t feel like a forking jerk for sending that thing out. The person who had the fajita did say something to the waitress and she offered him a replacement that he refused. Later she did remove the fajita from the bill. That was nice and our server did seem very nice. Sadly she works in a place that prepared mostly mediocre food and drink when we were there.

So if your a fan of overly sweet/weak margaritas, American/Mexi Style food that’s bland and mostly dry, expensive salads, in a loud rubbing elbows bar and circus like atmosphere…….This is JUST THE Place for you!

La Piazza Al Forno Glendale AZ is Worth a Fork!

IMG_8604

In old town historic Glendale AZ is a little Italian Restaurant called La Piazza Al Forno. This restaurant might be famous for being featured on Food Network TV’s Diners Drive Inns and Dives with Guy Fieri but don’t hold that against them. This little restaurant pumps out Italian Certified  Neapolitan Pizzas that are light and delicious. After all these are the delicate kind of pizzas that you eat with a knife and fork. With mozzarella cheese is made in house and certified D.o.p. Italian tomatoes how can these pizzas not be delicious?

Margherita D.O.C.

Margherita D.O.C.

The pizza that most people start out with is the basic certified pizza call the Margherita D.O.C. It’s made of Certified Dough San Marzano Tomatoes D.o.p., house made mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh basil. This is the lightest pizza I ever had anywhere. The crust is light and pillowy and moist in the center. The tomatoes are rich with tomato flavor. The olive oil and basil compliment the pizza perfect. It’s a very tasty pizza and you can eat half and not have a forking brick in your stomach like regular pizzas from most other places. This pizza doesn’t weigh you down. It’s a forking pleasure to eat.

Salvatore Pizza- San Marzano tomatoes D.o.p., house made mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, prosciutto di parma, arugula

I’ve also had other pizzas here including the one they might be locally famous for such as their white pizza that’s tasty and delicious. They won an award for best white pizza in metro Phoenix. Another dish they are well known for is the Spaghetti Pie but that one is only a forking special. I haven’t tried that one yet but the last time I was there almost every table had one. This time I thought I’d try something different and had the Calzone.

Calzone

Calzone

This one is not for the faint of heart. Nor do I recommend to devour this beauty in one forking seating. It comes stuffed with ricotta, house made mozzarella and a San Marzano tomato sauce is included for the yum factor for $9.00. For two dollars more I added fresh spinach because eating a little bit of vegetable made it seem slightly healthier (LOL) and Calabrian Chiles for pops of heat for fun. This is how it looked inside.

My husband had the Dolce Diavolo pizza.

If you manage to save any room you must save room for one of the cheese cakes because they are the best in the valley. I don’t always like cheese cake because many of them are thick and taste sour to me. The cheese cake here is east coast style and is light in texture with the correct sweetness and touch of vanilla to it.

This cheese was absolutely delicious! My husband always thought he hated cheese cake but this is a great one so even he liked it.

Bink’s Midtown Phoenix AZ Korean Style Fried Chicken

UPDATE>>>JUST A MEMORY******CLOSED FOR BUSINESS

To me fried chicken can be tasty. It’s usually moist and usually had a tasty crusty coating. Sometimes it might be greasy and sometimes the skin is mushy and gross. It might be tasty at best and usually isn’t my favorite food.

I recently tried Korean Style Fried Chicken from Bink’s Midtown in Phoenix AZ and it was truly FORKING AMAZING and completely unlike any fried chicken I had before.

The skin was crispy thin and crackly. It was not greasy one bit and was spicy, sweet, vinegary with other flavors that seemed very balanced. The interior was also very flavorful, juicy and delicious.

This was the FORKING Best Fried Chicken I ever had.

Rocket Burger Phoenix AZ It’s A Forking Blast!

Rocket Burger and Subs Phoenix AZ

Rocket Burger and Subs Phoenix AZ

I’ve been here before but not in a forking while. I was reminded of Rocket Burger while watching the PBS TV Show about local eateries called Check Please Arizona. This is an extremely casual eatery where you order at the counter and seat your forking self. This place isn’t fancy so don’t forking expect to see any forking linen napkins.

Rocket burger is well known for burgers, sandwiches, beef hot dogs, sub sandwiches, soft serve ice cream and a forking wall of assorted bottled sodas. They had so many sodas I don’t know what I forking saw. The Portions are forking HUGH and the prices aren’t much more than fast food but the food your receive is FORKING much better than fast food.

IMG_7761

So I forking made it back to Rocket Burger and ordered my first burger and ordered the Popular New York Burger platter.

IMG_7765

This was forking much larger and better tasting than I was expecting. The rolls were carefully toasted and the 100% Angus Burgers were cooked a perfect medium to my liking. The pastrami on top of my burger was much tastier than most pastrami you get anywhere and was actually grilled nice and tasty. The house made coleslaw with rocket sauce was delicious. Even the fries were very good. They tasted like real potatoes!

IMG_7767

After a few bites I was almost forking full. At this point I lose the bun and go and get a fork. Bag up half the burger left for my dogs and pick at the rest of the filling.

My husband had a double bacon cheese burger platter. Each platter  we ordered was a double patty sandwich with a side of fries or onion rings and a bottled soda.

IMG_7763

He said his burger was great and we should forking come here more often.

IMG_7764

He got all these corn meal crusted onion rings with his burger! I would like to try the soft serve ice cream but I doubt I’ll ever have the forking room in my stomach after eating here.
