Grassroots Kitchen and Tap of Phoenix – Scottsdale AZ is worth a Fork

IMG_2838

The decor and the cuisine is rustic American that’s slightly modern and slightly Southern American. The cuisine isn’t fancy but is well crafted and always delicious. Craft beer and wine are also on tap.

There are two locations of this restaurant. One in Phoenix AZ and one in Scottsdale AZ. I’ve been to both. The experience is similar except that the Phoenix location has a patio.

It was a perfect day for outside dining so we were seated on the comfortable patio. I ordered the Scottish Salmon with a half salad.

IMG_2834

The salmon had a tasty char and was flaky and moist. The salad was an interesting chopped  salad with a lot of crunch textures and flavors.

My husband had the BBQ Brisket with Jalapeño Cheddar Grits. It’s one of his favorites here he’s ordered it a few times.

IMG_2843

Jalapeno Cheddar Grits

Jalapeno Cheddar Grits

I tasted a piece of brisket and it was tender and moist with the right amount of smoke. It seemed succulent but wasn’t too fatty. It was seasoned just right. The grits were cheesy with a little heat and a LOT of flavor.

One of the specialties of the house are the house made pies. They offer a pie of the day and always offer the key lime pie.

IMG_2837

The key lime pie here is not too sweet but just sweet enough. It’s smooth, tangy and creamy with a great mouth feel. The crust is nice and tasty. It thin and made with graham cracker. It’s the best key lime pie I ever had.

Other plates we tried at The Grassroots Kitchen and Tap were-

IMG_2844

Roasted Chicken Waldorf Salad – A very detailed salad with lots of ingredients such as, arugula, spinach, apple, radish, cranberries, raisins, onion, candied pecans. This salad eats like a meal and is very satisfying.

Blackened Fish of the Day Sandwich (Ono)

Blackened Fish of the day (Ono) Sandwich with Fancy Tri-Color Cauliflower Salad.

IMG_2848

On another day  the Blackened Fish Sandwich was Maui Maui Fish with a green bean salad.

IMG_2845

Shrimp Po Boy with Jalapeño Cheddar Grits.

IMG_2842

Pumpkin Pie…(forking YUM!)

IMG_2850

The Apple Pie was just as Good!

I like that this restaurants offers many fish dishes, lots of salads, interesting side dishes and they offer an assortment of meat entrees too.

Nothing is too fancy that I had so far but everything was prepared well and seasoned nicely.

Service was friendly and efficient on each visit I had.

Have you Tried Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa AZ?

IMG_3041

Organ Stop Pizza is an attraction in Mesa Arizona that houses one of or the biggest Wurlitzer Organs in the world.

IMG_3094

The organ and music playing is the main attraction that’s included when you come in for dinner.  They even provide request cards so you might hear your special song or have Happy Birthday Played for someone special.

Dinner is budget priced and family friendly. You pick from pizzas, salad bar or pasta. They also have an ice-cream stand too.

IMG_3045

The Salad Bar

The Salad Bar

You order at the counter…………

Grade "A" Health Inspection

Grade “A” Health Inspection

pay, get your drink and silverware, seat yourself and look to a giant board on the wall for your number to show up.

We made salads at the salad bar to go with dinner.

Everything was crisp and fresh. My salad was similar to a salad I might make at a budget steakhouse salad bar. The only real difference is that everything was fresh. It was kind of fun to sample potato salad, macaroni salad and cole slaw. The salads lacked a house made taste but they tasted very fresh.

IMG_3055

At Organ Stop Pizza is plenty of seating. Downstairs is seating for around FIVE HUNDRED PEOPLE on benches and it’s very loud. Upstairs is seating for around two hundred people and isn’t as noisy. All over the restaurant you will see plenty of family party celebrations. You will also see children laughing, singing and dancing along with the organ music.

Our pizzas came.

IMG_3056

These pizzas have thin crisp crusts that are coated in cornmeal or semolina flour. The cheese is melted and ok. The sauce could use some flavor because it reminds me of frozen pizza from the super market.

I watch the organ music.

IMG_3070

The organ rises swirling up from the floor. It’s loud and powerful. It is in many pieces all around the restaurant. You see drums, tinkering things, all kinds of pipes everywhere. There is a piano hooked up, something else that loos like a piano but makes a different sound maybe it was a harpsichord and a whole lot of horns.

IMG_3084

IMG_3083

Glass panels open and close to the music. There is so much around that didn’t photo well for me. It’s all this plus 10x more.

The fist tune I heard from the mighty organ was the theme from Star Wars. Next was the Star Trek Theme. Patriotic American March Songs were next and were followed by a bunch of Disney Theme Tunes.

If you get board from organ music you can wander off to the arcade and play some games. They have a small gift store too filled with lots of stuffed animals and recorded music of the organ playing.

We had a fun time here. This place should be on everyone’s Metro Phoenix Bucket List.

IMG_3094

Have you tried Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa Arizona Yet?

Your most likely not going to drive across town to dine here but if your in the neighborhood this place is suggested.

My Last Dinner at Binkley’s in Cave Creek AZ 2016

IMG_2776

(apologies if some photos face the wrong way. Some formats will see all the photos correct. I understand the problem now and am working on it)

Binkley’s of Cave Creek Arizona is a fine dinning experience and is considered to be one of Arizona’s finest of restaurants. The cuisine is artistry, French Inspired, imaginative and whimsey. You can expect some molecular gastronomy and benson burners with your meal. The Chef/Owner is a four time James Beard nominated Chef and had experience working at the French Laundry. This was my last dinner at Binkley’s in Cave Creek because the Chef is closing Binkley’s doors the end of June. It is expected that Chef Binkley will open a new concept in the fall.

The atmosphere isn’t terribly fancy at Binkley’s. This fine dinning restaurant is located in a strip mall. The dining room looks like next picture below.

This is the kind of restaurant that you make a reservation for. You don’t just walk in and expect to get a table. For most people it’s a special occasion type of restaurant and depending on your wallet it’s either a one time visit or a once a year kind of visit if you enjoy fine dining.

IMG_2783

Their were many changes to Binkley’s from my previous four visits.

My previous visits offered a choices of tastings menus and ala carte options with bountiful bite size amuse bouche served through out dinner, assortment of bread and choices to customize your menu. For example a choice of three each of cold appetizers, hot appetizers, dinners and desserts or Cheese Courses and you put it together the way you please.

The latest menu I had offered either an already written Petite Menu (5 Course) or a Chef’s Selection Menu (8 Course) Menu. I didn’t really have all these choices this time. I had to order the Petite Menu or the Chef’s menu. I was allowed to swap off plates I didn’t care for to go with vegetarian options. The cheese menu has been discontinued.

I was looking forward to the really delicious assortment of breads we usually get. My favorite was the bite size brioche.

They started us off with a well made crusty bread. Bread has been streamed down to one selection on my visit but it was served with French Butter.

IMG_2782

Next comes our first amuse bouche.

IMG_2784

Parsnip Soup with drops of Sumac Oil. It was so smooth and so rich and full of flavor.

Next comes our second amuse bouche.

IMG_2785

Peas and Carrot with Ginger Oil and Spiced Hazelnuts. Tasty- I would have liked this one slightly bigger or served on a spoon or a piece of lettuce so it would be easier to eat. This one was candy for the eye but also was extremely hard to eat with a fork.

Next came my first course.

IMG_2790

Milk Poached Daikon Radish with Mizuna, Wasabi and in Zabaglione garnished with starry blue flowers. The sauce was rich and smooth. The Mizuna gave this dish some texture.

My second course was….

IMG_2792

Asparagus with Lemongrass Daikon, ( daikon again ?) Shiitakes, Cilantro, Tomato and Galangal. The flavors were mostly mild and the strongest flavor was asparagus. The only technical flaw of the evening of food preparation were the shiitakes. They were very thin and very leathery and chewy.

Next was my third course and favorite plate of the evening.

IMG_2795

It was Leek Risotto with a Parmesan Foam. The rice was al dente and was in a perfectly flavorful seasoned balanced sauce. The Parmesan cream added that wonder umami to it to make it irresistible. This was forking great!

After that was an amuse bouche.

IMG_2796

A palate cleanser of house made Grapefruit Soda.

My main course followed.

IMG_2802

I had Steelhead Trout with a Fiddlehead Fern, Spring Onion, and a Stinging Nettle Sauce. Technically this dish was prepared to perfection but this dinner was far less detailed than other dinners I had previously from Binkley’s. It was good but no fireworks. I also note that no-one cleared empty glasses and previous amuse bouche ware from the table. To my surprise someone served me a very fruit forward Cabernet instead of something that might pair with this dinner. This is NOT typical of Binkey’s. I can’t help thinking that I don’t know if they were short on help or if the help were not running on full fuel because they know their jobs are in limbo with Binkley’s restaurant closing soon.

Don’t take what I wrote the wrong way……The food is always excellent at Binkley’s but in some of my past visits the food was more like this……..

Horseradish Crusted Halibut

Horseradish Crusted Halibut

Lobster Ravioli

Lobster Ravioli

Smoked Loch Etive Sea Trout

Smoked Loch Etive Sea Trout

Complexity …..More Bells and Whistles….FIREWORKS!

Fortunately after being underwhelmed with my entree the best amuse bouche I ever had comes next and dishes are cleared.

IMG_2805

House made Mascarpone Cheese with prunes, a vegetable chip, local honey and Fresh Shaved French Truffles. This was awesome. How could it not be great. This is one of the reasons why  you dine at Binkley’s. I can’t think of another restaurant around the metro Phoenix area where it seems truffles are always on the menu.

Waitstaff come out with a Benson Burner to present us an amuse bouche of Hibiscus Tea infused with lemon and rosemary. It was wonderfully fragrant.

IMG_2808

Our dessert is next. This plate involves molecular gastronomy. The dessert being served was Freezing Strawberry Soup.

IMG_2811 IMG_2812 IMG_2814 IMG_2815 IMG_2819

I think I was too close to the dessert because it felt like ice rubbing against my lap.

We finish with two more amuse bouche.

IMG_2826 IMG_2827

A mini Chocolate Souffle and Orange Macarons.

We both enjoyed the chocolate souffle the most of the desserts.

We pay and notice the hostess desk is deserted. Usually someone thanks us for coming and hands us a bag of house made snack mix.

We help ourself to our snack mix.

Then in the parking lot someone runs after us to ask us if we got our snack mix. A couple days latter someone does call from Binkley’s and thanks us for dining with them.

IMG_2828

That’s the Truth. It was The Forking Truth.

That was my last Dinner from Binkley’s of Cave Creek 2016.

Binkley’s is evolving into something different and this restaurant is closing summer 2016 The “new” project is expected to open at the more casual Bink’s Midtown Location that will be remodeled for the new dining experience that is expected to be on a higher lever. The new Binkley owned restaurant is expected to open around fall 2016.

Worth a Fork..... You might Travel across Town to Dine Here because they offer something different you can't find at most places.

Check Please Festival Sunday March 20th Phoenix Arizona

Entering the 2016 Check Please Festival

Entering the 2016 Check Please Festival

(Apologies if any of the photo are upside down or sideways from my end I don’t see them that way but on certain cell phones or computers I’m told some of the photos don’t show as they should.)

IMG_2668

Check Please is a local public television TV show where viewers get to dish about their favorite local publicly owned restaurants.

Check Please Food and Wine Festival features some of the dished about restaurants, wine and beer tastings, cooking demos and panel discussions. This year the tickets ran in cost between $49.00-$69.00 depending on when they were purchased and is considered a donation to public television.

Special guest of the festival were……

Chef Lidia Bastianich- Celerberty Chef, Cookbook Author, TV Host and Restauranteur & More

Barbara Pool Fenzi- SouthWest Cooking Teacher and Cookbook Author

and

Host Robert McGrath- TV Host, Best of SouthWest James Bread Awarded Chef & More

There were at least two no shows at the festival.

One was Eddie’s House. Kinda sad about that because you can get some tasty food at Eddie’s House I’ve been there several times. Eddie was also suppose to do a 12:30 Presentation on the Sub Zero Wolf Stage. Don’t know what happened to Eddie no news is on FaceBook or Twitter at this moment.

IMG_2622

The other that I noticed was Old Town Sarajevo. I also have been to Old Town Sarajevo and was looking forward to Bosnian Cuisine but for whatever reason they also weren’t able to show up.

IMG_2605

I didn’t try everything at the festival that I photoed but did try quite a few things.

IMG_2645

The first thing I tried at the festival came from Tarbel’s a Scottish Beef Sandwich with Horseradish Sauce. Chef Tarbel is considered to be among the best chef’s in Arizona and actually won an Iron Chef Competition. I’ve eaten at his restaurant and the food I had there was certainly 5 stars out of 5. I tasted the sauce and it was delicious, but the beef in this sandwich was too fatty for me to enjoy. After one bite I couldn’t eat it. I confess I don’t enjoy lots of beef fat. I also do confess I’m not familiar with Scottish Beef and maybe it’s suppose to be a very fatty beef?

IMG_2603

Lon’s at The Hermosa Inn presented their well received already famous Pork Mangalita.

Sorry for poor Photo

Rula Bula Irish Pub and Restaurant made a delicious Bread Pudding topped with an Irish Whiskey Sauce.

IMG_2612

The Dhaba made Tikka Masala and Mutter Paneer.

Sorry for poor photo

Foie Gras over Chicken Liver Mousse from The Pig and Pickle.

Inspired by Lidia Bastiaich Cheese Crusted Chicken Tender

The Soon to open Match Cuisine & Cocktails has not appeared on the Check Please Show. But graciously prepared one of Check Please special guest Lidia Bastiaich’s recipes from her new cook book her Cheese Crusted Chicken Tenders with Celery Pestata. They also prepared Pork Belly Press-Trami. I thought Match Cuisine & Cocktails food was executed better than most from the festival.

IMG_2651

Special Guest of the Festival were Chef Robert McGrath and Chef Lidia Bastianich mostly discussing Lidia’s career and American Italian Food in America and Italian food in the different regions of Italy.

IMG_2623

Several Wine Pouring Tables. I tried three wines that weren’t for me and got dumped.

IMG_2625

Honey Chipotle Chicken with Quinoa from Tryst Cafe.

IMG_2627IMG_2629

Flavors of Louisiana prepared Catfish Étouffée and Praline Cheese Cake.

IMG_2630

The Haymaker served Pulled Pork Sandwiches.

IMG_2632

Vovomeena served  seafood tacos made with three seafoods and served the broth of the seafood.

IMG_2633

Cowboy Ciao served Pork Belly with Chayote Squash Slaw, Pickled Watermelon and Prickly Pear Reduction. It was among one of the more impressive dishes at the festival.

IMG_2635

IMG_2638

The above photo is from America’s Taco Shop and it’s a Pork Taco.

IMG_2640

Bella Luna Ristorante served Chicken Piccata. This is one of the restaurants that was out of it’s element. The Forking Truth is that the food wasn’t kept hot and someone accidentally slipped with the salt because it was a salt bomb. I thought this food would make me sick. I thought it was inedible.

IMG_2646IMG_2647

I skipped over Rito’s but my husband said all the food he tried here was delicious. He also said we can make the trip to Surprise AZ to try them out.

The Salt Cellar prepared some sort of Shrimp Dish. ( the photo is at the bottom)

IMG_2654

Freshers Smoke House offered Pulled Pork and Extremely Sweet Butter Cake. It was as sweet as frosting.

IMG_2655

Attractive looking Brie Cheese Crostini came from Murphy’s Restaurant.

IMG_2659

Four Peaks Brewing Company made Kilt Lifter Bratwurst.

IMG_2661

Bertha’s Cafe made brownies and Chocolate Chip Bar Cookies. I saw a sign for cupcakes but they were out when I got there.

IMG_2662

Timo Wine Bar had an accident with the Brie Soup but offered Ceviche and salads of Beet Root  and Goat Cheese.

IMG_2663

Cucina Tagliani served Meatballs and Tiramisu. I have to say the Tiramisu was the best Tiramisu I ever had any where.

IMG_2664

Brownies from Chloe’s Corner.

IMG_2665

Pasta with Marinara and Pink Sauce from Salerno’s Restaurant and Pizzeria.

IMG_2667

Pork on a Stick and Sticky Rice from The Wild Tiger/ Little Tiger.

IMG_2666

Hob Nobs prepared Turkey BLT Sandwiches.

I didn’t take any notes at the festival so I didn’t remember everything perfect.

t have two leftover shrimp photos I think one of them is from the Salt Cellar on the left and the other one on the right might be San Tan Brewing Co?

IMG_2652 IMG_2653

The Check Please Festival started providing bottles of water but then switched to weird tasting water with electrolytes. I got slightly dehydrated at the festival because I didn’t like the taste of the electrolyte water and the wines being poured were too cheap for me to drink. If I attend the Check Please Festival next year I’ll have to bring my own water.

That wasn’t everything but that was most of the 2016 Check Please Arizona Festival.

Donuts are Forking Still on the Rise in The Metro Phoenix Area

IMG_8484

Mmmmm………. Donuts!

Glazed Donut from Bosa Donuts Phoenix AZ

Glazed Donut from Bosa Donuts Phoenix AZ

Donuts are forking still on the rise in the Metro Phoenix area. There is even a bigger wHOLE world of them out there since last year. Bosa Donuts are a local chain that’s mushrooming everywhere all over the metro Phoenix area. Ten years back it was the yogurt shops opening up all over and soon after were the cup cake shops. I haven’t noticed new yogurt shops or cup cake shops opening but, donuts are another story. Over the past couple years Donuts are still on the Rise and still going strong.

Donuts are eaten in every culture out there and there sure a still a forking lot of love for donuts in the Metro Phoenix Area. When I did a search for donuts in the metro Phoenix area and the choices turned out over 2,800 places out there.

Orange Pistachio Rollover Donuts Phoenix AZ

Orange Pistachio Rollover Donuts Phoenix AZ

A successful Hot Dog Truck, now a successful brick and mortar Hot Dog Restauranteurs opened Rollover Donuts. They feature some unique gourmet flavors of donuts and if you don’t get there at opening time your selection is somewhat limited. I tried an Orange Pistachio Donut. It had great flavor but was less light and airy to what I’m used to. Still a tasty donut.

Beyond Donuts and Cafe Glendale AZ

Beyond Donuts and Cafe Glendale AZ

Beyond Donuts is a small cafe that offers a very limited selection of donuts along with breakfast burritos. The donut I tried was nicely prepared, seemed oil free and was tasty and accented with cinnamon crumbs.

Welcome Chicken and Donuts

Welcome Chicken and Donuts Phoenix AZ

Successful restaurant-owners and Chefs of the Welcome Diner opened up an Asian Inspired Fried Chicken Restaurant that also makes donuts called Welcome Chicken and Donuts. I had a Key Lime Filled Donut here and although it lacked enough filling this was the most delicious and almost perfect donut I tried the whole year. It was light and seemed oil free. The filling tasted really perfect with the right bite of lime. It was smooth and not too sweet but sweet enough.

Desert Donuts Anthem AZ

Desert Donuts Anthem AZ

A few of the newer donut shops I tried were what they call interactive donuts. The store makes you your donuts fresh to order and you have your choice of two of many toppings for your basic cake style donut. Desert Donuts is an Independent donut shop that offers the interactive style of donuts. The donuts I tried from there were hot and fresh as promised and they offered not all but mostly traditional toppings. I had the Boston Cream donut here. The cake donut was warm and fresh and seemed very light and delicate. They dipped it in fresh chocolate icing and spooned some filling on top.

Fractured Prune Doughnuts Phoenix AZ

Fractured Prune Doughnuts Phoenix AZ

Fractured Prune Doughnuts is a National Chain of the interactive donut. A new location recently opened near me so I wanted to try them. The donut I got was on the greasy side and I couldn’t identify the blackberry cobbler flavor I asked for. My donut had what they called glaze topping that tasted like flavored pancake syrup to me.

Fractured Prune Doughnuts are a favorite to many so that means there is a donut out there for every taste.

There is a wHole world of donuts out there. Don’t know what I’ll forking try next.

Donuts are Forking still on the Rise in the Metro Phoenix AZ Area.

Sandwiches that are most Worth Mentioning in the Metro Phoenix Area

The Rueben Rueben From Scott's Generations Phoenix AZ

The Rueben Rueben From Scott’s Generations Phoenix AZ

I haven’t tried every sandwich out there in the Metro Phoenix Area but I have tried quite a few and these are the sandwiches most worth mentioning of what I tried recently.

Scott’s Generations is among the few places in the Metro Phoenix Area that serves up respectable tasty Pastrami on double baked seeded rye bread. The pastrami is full flavored and peppery and not too lean and not too fatty. It’s just right! I do warn you that the sandwich is enough to feed two-three people so your going to hurt yourself if you attempt to eat the whole forking thing. Scott’s Generations is also one of the few restaurants I know of in the area that also offers belly lox and sturgeon.

Rayner's Chocolate and Coffee Shop Phoenix AZ

Rayner’s Chocolate and Coffee Shop Glendale AZ

Rayner’s is a small English Cafe,  Bakeshop, Chocolate Shop, Coffee Shop and small goods store in Glendale AZ. They call this sandwich, “Best Grilled Cheese in The Whole World Sandwich.” Well the forking truth is that it’s NOT the best grilled cheese in the whole world sandwich but it is the best tasting vegetarian sandwich I had in a long time. The chef made tasty sauces on the right vegetables with that white rye bread are extra special, not too heavy and you might have room from very good fresh baked treats or the best hand made chocolates around.

Nocawich Tempe AZ

Nocawich Tempe AZ

While Scott’s Generation’s is known for dependable respectable good pastrami ….It must be said that the Wagu Pastrami from Nocawich in Tempe is your special occasion pastrami. It’s prepared in house and there is no other like it in all of the Phoenix Metro Area. I just wish it was piled on a little thicker. It’s luscious, it’s smokey, it pops with flavors and is a special occasion treat.

It has been noted in many publications that the “What the Cluck” chicken sandwich is the best sandwich from Nocawich but I haven’t been able to try that one as of yet. Nocawich is also known for other highest quality sandwiches, baked goods and triple fried French Fries. I do note that this restaurant is located by ASU and the atmosphere was terribly loud when I was there.

Cafe

Old Town Sarajevo Phoenix AZ

Bosnian Sandwiches on UNIQUE Bosnian fresh made to order bread are served at Old Town Sarajevo in Phoenix AZ.  The bread is uniquely light textured like a donut and is a slightly greasy. The specialty is the house made case-less spicy beef sausage. The condiment you use here is ajvar that made from roasted red peppers, eggplant and spices. It’s worth a trip here because the atmosphere. It’s like a town from a Disney Park gone Bosnian and most of the customers are Bosnian.

Beef on Weck from Taste of Buffalo Glendale AZ

Beef on Weck from Taste of Buffalo Glendale AZ

The Beef on Weck Sandwich is normally only served in the buffalo area. This sandwich is served on a hard kaiser roll brushed with caraway seeds and salt. Inside the sandwich is a big mound of tasty medium rare beef (well closer to medium) served on a dipped roll with au jus and fresh horseradish. A delicious sandwich that you can get at A taste of Buffalo in Glendale AZ.

Noble Bread Phoenix AZ

Noble Eatery Phoenix AZ

Most of the best restaurants of the Metro Phoenix area feature Noble Bread. Noble Eatery is a very small counter with a few tables that offers a daily changing menu of a few locally sourced fruit or vegetable dishes, a couple crusty flat fresh baked sandwiches and smorgas. Smorgas are chunks of heirloom grain Noble Bread usually served with a vegetable or Italian tuna, grain and bean mixture.

This tiny restaurant is very similar in food style to Pane Bianco. Both are rustic with an Italian accent and relay on simplest high end ingredients for comforting flavor.

Both restaurants serve fresh made to order crusty local heirloom grain flat bread sandwiches that look similar with quality fillings. I must have been to Pene Bianco over half a dozen times but haven’t been there recently because they took my favorite sandwich off the menu and changed my husband’s favorite sandwich from the original menu. The current sandwiches are very good too. The recommended sandwich has always been the hand pulled mozzarella with tomato and fresh basil from Pane Bianco.

Neither Noble Eatery or Pane Bianco have a public restaurant so you are not going to travel from far to dine at either restaurant.

Banh Mi Sandwich

Banh Mi Sandwich

Bahn Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery offers tasty Bahn Mi Sandwiches and more. They offer TEN kinds of Bahn Mi Sandwiches on rice and wheat flour baguettes. You get that crunch and soft center with all those tasty fillings of pickled carrot and radish, crunchy cucumber, fresh cilantro and house made aioli. This restaurant is a favorite among locals for the tasty food and low prices too!

Cheezheads Peoria AZ

Cheezheads Peoria AZ

Cheezheads of Peoria AZ is worth mentioning because they make the tastiest cheesesteak we’ve found so far. The roll is a little on the soft side and would be elevated with toasting but it is a fresh baked roll prepared in house and it’s good. The filling is ribeye steak that is very tender and seasoned just so. It’s a very good sandwich that deserves a shout out

One of the tastiest sandwiches of all came from a not necessarily a sandwich shop but what might be considered a complex.

Ocotillo Phoenix AZ

Ocotillo Phoenix AZ

The Tandori Sandwich from Ocotillo Phoenix AZ. This sandwich was interesting and complex. It was just bursting with all kinds of flavors and made with high quality very delicious chicken. The bread also seemed like it was fresh made.

A honorable mention has to go to Rocket Burger in Phoenix AZ.

Rocket Burger is a casual budget eatery that offers a variety of burgers that are hand packed angus beef in various sizes along with many other items.

It must be mentioned that Rocket Burger offers a forking GIANT wall of bottled sodas for you to choose from.

Rocket Burger also offers many other sandwiches. Recently I had the Mexican Spicy Fish Sandwich.

Rocket Burger Phoenix AZ

Rocket Burger Phoenix AZ

Breaded Cod topped with an extremely flavorful and surprisingly delicious slaw. I washed it down with a dry cucumber soda.

These were the Sandwiches Most Worth Mentioning that I tried in the Metro Phoenix Area.

Casa Filipino Restaurant and Bake Shop Phoenix AZ A Forking Experience like no Other

IMG_1254

When you walk into Casa Filipina in Phoenix Arizona you step into a small bake shop and enter into what looks like a older banquet hall with numbered tables and a musician corner.

I’m not real familiar with Filipino Food although I know it’s cuisine is sort of Asian, Indian, Latin and American influenced. I also know some but not all dishes include organ meat, uncommon animal parts and blood.

I asked my waiter what spices are used for the Filipino Chicken Dish called Chicken Inasal. I just wondered what it would taste like….Instead of telling me what spices are used he says, “I don’t know but it’s a good choice.” I order it anyway….

Then all of a sudden….

IMG_1269

Our waiter just starts up with a forking Karaoke Machine and starts singing “Love is a many splendid thing” and many other Frank Sinatra tunes followed.

This was kind of neat but also forking strange. The waiter actually had a forking great voice and was good enough to be a professional singer.

My husband’s meal arrives.

IMG_1251

It’s called Beef Kalderetta. It’s basically a tender beef stew. The beef is tender and is infused with flavors. The onions lacked caramelization that was noted on the menu, “topped with caramelized onions and potatoes”. The fries were a surprise as we guessed the stew would be prepared with a potato. It tasted like something anybody’s grandmother would make but served with rice and Asian flavored noodles that contained a piece of carrot and some chicken meat.

At least ten minutes goes by and then my meal arrives during a Frank Sinatra number.

IMG_1269

Chicken Inasal

IMG_1252

The chicken seemed marinated in lime, vinegar and annato. The chicken was falling apart tender and a vinegary soy sauce was served on the side for dipping. Annato rice and Asian flavored noodles spiked with chicken meat and a piece of carrot were served on the side and all the food was served over some sort of leaf.

We order two desserts because the Phoenix New Times wrote this year that this restaurant serves up some of the very best baked goods in the metro Phoenix Area. They are officially on a top 10 list this year.

We order a mango and a ube (purple yam) tart.

Mango and Ube Tart from Casa Filipina Phoenix AZ

Mango and Ube Tart from Casa Filipina Phoenix AZ

I notice that the Ube tart looks very dry.

We tried to eat the desserts but neither of us could penetrate either dessert with a forking fork. I’m NOT talking about the crust. The FORKING CENTERS can’t be penetrated with a fork. The filling from these tarts can be used to fill forking pot holes in the road.

Needed  a forking  jack hammer.

IMG_1267

My husband breaks the desserts apart with his hands.

IMG_1260

IMG_1264

The desserts are inedible. I reckon the people at The Phoenix New Times didn’t try the desserts I tried. Or maybe they forking  like the desserts this way? Who the FORK knows?

We called a waitress over told her about the desserts and she told us the manager would speak with us.

He said nothing is wrong with his desserts and they are just cold. To me that was a weird thing to say. He should have said something like I’ll fix them for you….

IMG_1270

I’m forking thinking if his tarts need to be heated up well then why weren’t they served heated up? Am I suppose to heat them up myself sitting on them with my forking butt or perhaps I should have   my own portable forking heat source?

IMG_1271

He serves us a new ube tart that is good but our dry inedible mango tart is still on the table.

We ask for the check…pay…and leave.

As we walk out the door the manager comes running out after us.

IMG_1268

He says you didn’t have to forking pay for the desserts.

The desserts were on our check and nobody said to us that we didn’t have to pay so we forking paid.

Guess we needed forking telepathic powers to know what the fork the manager was thinking. I guess he meant to take the desserts off the check. He just forgot.

Casa Filipina serves up some tasty homestyle foods and offers weekend all day entertainment. We actually had fun dining here and now have a funny story to remember about the dessert.

IMG_1269

I already forking told you about the desserts I tried so I would be too frightened to try a dessert from here again.

Forking Dining with Dogs at Cucina Tagliani Glendale AZ December 2015

On the way to Cucina Tagliani

On the way to Cucina Tagliani

Our adventure starts with a fun car ride and the cute three year old on the left starts crying she is so happy when she sees the parking lot because she anticipates some yummy food and fun. The 14 and 1/2 year old is still feeling fine and living life despite his condition of cancer.

We visit this restaurant often because of the location, the budget pricing, the friendly staff,  great service, the dog friendly patio and the tasty food. One of the things that makes this budget American Italian Restaurant better than the others are all the vegetable selections they offer. I like that you can also substitute spaghetti squash for pasta in most dishes. They also offer a few heathy seafood dishes with very reasonable pricing.

We pick a comfortable table and the Cucina Tagliani Staff is quick to bring the dogs water and  the table a hot basket of garlic toast.

IMG_0948

We order big happy hour priced glasses of wine and then decide on dinner.

I picked a dinner I haven’t had before at Cucina Tagliani, it was the Chicken Piccata.

IMG_0955

I had it over spaghetti squash instead of pasta and it was pretty darn tasty and not too heavy. The white meat chicken was moist and flavorful. I liked the fresh basil in this dish and the bright lemon flavor in the sauce. My buddies thought the chicken was good too.

IMG_0959

My husband had the Papa’s Special. It’s enough forking food to feed a small family. It’s two spinach manicotti’s, veal parmigiana, and a full size sausage lasagna bubbling with molten cheese.

I forking love coming here. It’s the best!

The nice folks at Cucina Tagliani sent us a coupon for complimentary dessert so we had a piece of chocolate marscapone cake.

IMG_0968

It was moist and chocolatey and not too sweet. It’s one of the best chocolate cakes I had out!

20% off Gift Cards are available for purchase at Costco. Cucina Tagliani also offers a dining card that periodically gives you extra discounts and offers via email.

Cucina Tagliani is worth a fork if you are in the area.

Dining with Dogs at Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery Phoenix AZ Worth a Fork

"Where are we going to eat today?"

“Where are we going to eat today?”

Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery is a small fast casual restaurant that specializes in the Vietnamese Sandwich called a Banh Mi. The sandwich is made on a Vietnamese Style Baguette that’s made with rice flour in addition to wheat flour. The sandwiches at BMBVE get topped with fresh sliced cucumber, fresh cilantro, pickled carrots, daikon radish, jalapeño, house made aioli and one of ten fillings to pick from. Most of the sandwiches look similar to the photo below. I’ve tried three of the ten Bahn Mi Sandwiches so far. The bread seems much lighter than a regular baguette with a different kind of crunch to the exterior and a soft center. All the sandwiches taste different and so far all that I tried were very tasty. They are the perfect blend of savory, sour/sweet and spicy. I also like that you can eat a big sandwich and it doesn’t leave you with a rock in your stomach like a regular hoagie or submarine sandwich.

This Vietnamese Restaurant does NOT offer Pho. This is a Pho-free Vietnamese Restaurant.

Other items they offer are….

IMG_1071

Lotus Root Salad

IMG_1050

Green Papaya Salad (more sweet than sour and accented with fresh mint)

IMG_1065

Egg Rolls served with lettuce fresh herbs and fish sauce so you can wrap them.

IMG_1064

Tasty plump Pot Stickers in chicken or pork

IMG_1066

Noodle salad bowls called bun. It’s almost like a pho salad.

This time I tried a rice plate with chicken. I note that this plate came with an egg roll that my husband swiped.

IMG_1052

This was really FORKING delicious! The dark meat boneless chicken was moist, juicy and developed with exotic flavors and brushed with more flavors. Even the salad was light and delicious.

IMG_1053

The dogs forking enjoyed some of the food too! This is dining on a budget. Prices run from $4.00 for a salad, most Banh Mi Sandwiches run 6-$7.00 and the rice plate is the most expensive item on the menu and runs $8.00 at the time of me writing this review. (I do note prices are subject to change)

Other items that they offer are specialty drinks such as Vietnamese Iced Coffee, Milk Tea and Smoothies.

Ocotillo – Destination Casual Dining in Phoenix – Certainly Worth a Fork!

IMG_0849

Ocotillo is a Compound that looks like it takes up an acre and consist of a coffee shop,

IMG_0861

an outdoor bar with all kinds of outdoor seating

IMG_0860

IMG_0862

IMG_0859

and multiple patios (also another larger patio that spills out of the inside dining room that I didn’t photo) and a big sleek modern light and airy restaurant with comfortable seating. The menu is very varied but is Modern American that changes with the season with International Accents. Ocotillo offers breakfast items, detailed salads, small (but not so small) plates, hot plates cold plates big plates. Interesting vegetable plates, sandwich plates, house made pastas, A selection of roasted chicken plates and much more! From what I tried the food seems to be quality casual detailed food at reasonable prices.

I’ve been at Ocotillo a few times and this is what I tried so far…..

IMG_0193

A well thought out detailed Spinach Salad with Smoked Salmon. The salmon was rich and buttery. Everything tasted perfect together. The eggs were prepared medium and weren’t chalky. Fresh herbs were used and brightened everything up and crisp capers added that perfect crunch.

IMG_0853

The Mole Chicken Salad. Also delicious but far more substantial than the Spinach Salad. If I only ate the spinach salad with smoked salmon I’d still be hungry. I ate around 1/3rd of the chicken mole salad and was almost full. I’d be willing to put it out there that if you don’t like mole or never had mole you will still enjoy this salad for a few reasons. The chicken in all the dishes I tried from Ocotillo are exceptional. Very good quality chicken that’s prepared to perfection that happens to be delicious. The chicken is only lightly kissed with mole. You have just enough to taste it but it’s not blanketed with mole. Everything in the salad is very good from the heirloom cherry tomatoes to the fresh marinated avocado. The pepitas are also roasted and are bursting with flavor.

On the small plate menu are Japanese Fish and Chips.

IMG_0195

The plate is not so small. Big Sweet Pieces of Panko Covered Cod that are served with Seaweed and Sea salt Seasoned Fries. The fish was so mild and sweet I didn’t even think this could be cod. Fries with just a light touch of seaweed were tasty too. Everything seemed like it was oil free.

IMG_0857

The Tandoori Style Chicken Sandwich is delicious. Besides many exotic spices it has this red lentil hummus kind of spread on it that elevates the already delicious charred chicken in it. This sandwich was very layered in textures and flavors. Crispy slightly bitter greens the charred in a good way moist flavorful chicken with tomatoes that added sweetness and cut threw the richness of the lentil hummus. I had my choice of fries or the side dish of the day, the watermelon and tomato salad with mild chiles. It was light and not spicy but interesting. The light bread seemed like it was fresh made and didn’t get soggy even two days latter when I ate the other half. I thought this was a real bargain for only $9.00.

My husband had the Grilled Steak Sandwich but I tasted a small piece of the steak.

IMG_0855

The Steak was tender,  moist and flavorful. The tabasco horseradish cream on the side was amazing. It was suppose to be served spread on the sandwich but my husband wanted it on the side.

So far I only tried one of the roasted Chicken dishes.

IMG_0196

It was the Thai Style Roasted Chicken. The Chicken was moist and developed with flavors and had a delicious red curry style sauce on it. I thought this was a large portion and this was shared the day I ate it.

Can’t wait to go back and try more.

Everything I tried was delicious so far. Unfortunately I didn’t have have room to try a dessert here yet.  I thought the prices were reasonable. Atmosphere is attractive and comfortable.

For me service was like from most restaurants.

On my first visit service wasn’t so great because the hostess sat me at a table that was being used as a bus-stand. On my fist visit the server I had knew little about the food and didn’t pace our plates. Perhaps that was just opening growing pains and the bugs were worked out because on my next visit the service was greatly improved. This server could answer questions about the food and we were checked on and served in a timely manner.

Between the menu and atmosphere you might want to come here if you are from out of town for a solid good casual detailed meal that isn’t too expensive.  If you live here you might want to travel across town for a  very nice meal out.
