My Trip to Tarbell’s The Tavern in Phoenix AZ – Worth a Fork!

The Tavern in Phoenix Arizona is a casual high end tavern that offers the highest quality bar grub, the best wines and more. The Chef and Owner is the Famous to Arizona Chef Mark Tarbell. Not only is he a highly decorated chef he also is a Wine Expert, Skier, Pilot, Dancer and Musician. Chef Tarbell has been featured in numerous publications and TV shows that include the Talk and Food Network’s Iron Chef American where Chef Tarbell defeated an Iron Chef and Won the cooking battle. He has three businesses in central Phoenix in the Camelback Corridor. There is his high end restaurant Tarbell’s, his wine store called The Wine Store and his casual tavern called The Tavern.

The Tavern is comfortable man’s cave with a stylish woody interior, a guitar lined brick wall and a Rock and Roll Atmosphere. The recommended libation is made as clear as the crystal clear Wine Glasses that are set on the tables……incase you didn’t know Wine is highly recommended here. Some of the wines are phenomenal off the charts and there isn’t a fee to purchase a bottle next door and enjoy it in the tavern.

The guitars of well known Gods of rock and roll adorn the walls. It’s no surprise that classic rock fills the air here.

On this wall are guitars from Bob Weir, Billy Joel, Alice Cooper and Nils Lofgren….There are other guitars on other walls as well and also guitars in The Wine Store. Outstanding bottles of wine are art features and embellish the walls. It’s full of Champagne wishes and Caviar Dreams here baby………..

From most seats you can sneak a peek into The Wine Store.

Today I went with the Grilled Scottish Salmon Sandwich (listed under burgers).

I received a Nobel Bread Bun stuffed with the Best Piece of Salmon I had in a very long time. This salmon was so fresh tasting and just melted in my mouth like butter. The salmon also had a nice sear on it and was topped with a tomato jam that complimented the salmon very well. The sandwich contained two types of lettuce, fresh sliced seedless cucumbers and a dill laced creme fraiche sauce.

We also shared a plate of Thick “Frites St” Fries.

These Fries are REALLY GREAT! They are like no other. They had a thin shattering crisp exterior that was almost like potato chip encasing a fluffy moist interior that had a great potato taste. The portion of the fries is also very large…I’d say it’s about four portions. On the side is a tasty Sriracha Spiked Ketchup.

My husband enjoyed the Green Chile Pork Stew with Tomatilla Salsa, Cotija Cheese, Cilantro and Tortilla Chips.

But he enjoyed the Stew more with those really great fries than the Chips.

I really enjoyed my visit to The Tavern.

I have to say The Tavern is Worth a Fork!

Worth a Fork!

I don’t usually write prices but remember quality comes with a price.

I also NOTE prices are subject to CHANGE.

Grilled Scottish Salmon Sandwich $19.00

Fries $9.00

Pork Stew $!9.00

My Trip to Ghost Ranch Modern Southwest Cuisine Restaurant in Tempe AZ

Ghost Ranch Restaurant is a full service restaurant located in Tempe Arizona just past the Ikea and serves Modern Southwest Foods. The decor is bright and rich in Southwest style. There’s big glass garage doors all around that let in lots of bright light during the day. There’s terra-cotta hanging fixtures, naugahyde covered chairs, large roomy tables, a wooden ceiling and a lively looking colorful bar in the center of the restaurant.

We started with the Chips, Salsa and Guacamole Appetizer.

We received two kinds of chips that seemed free of grease and were lightly salted. The guacamole was very fresh tasting, chunky and nicely seasoned. It was difficult for me to eat the green salsa because it was acidic tasting past my comfort zone…..However the red salsa was delicious and taste like it was made with dried chile pods.

I was torn between a few dishes and my server steered me to the Steamed Chile Relleno. He said the other dishes weren’t as special and the Chile Relleno involved more technique.

I received two (impossible to find) Chimayo Chile peppers. Stuffed with Mushroom Duxells (reduced mushrooms, stems, onions, butter). The Chile Peppers rest on a bed of chile enhanced goat cheese sauce and were adorned with raw leek salad. The flavors were spot on with a nice warm gentle yummy heat. All the flavors were harmonious. I was impressed how they got the chile so dry……usually roasted chile peppers keep leaking liquid forever. The chile held the duxelles in like a blanket. I LOVED the dish but you know me if you read my reviews…..I have to tell The Forking Truth………The one thing that should change about this dish would be the leek salad…..flavor-wise it was delicious but it was so tough it was almost impossible to eat….maybe either fried  leeks or a different vegetable would work better.

My husband had the Chile Colorado Braised Pork Chimayo Chile.

It’s a make your own Taco Plate with hand made tortillas on the side.

He said he enjoyed every thing and every thing was well seasoned. He also said his plate was a little short on  pico for his tacos and he wished the tortillas were warmed slightly.

We decided to try the Burnt Banana for dessert.

This was a plate of cold sliced bananas, with a little crumble, caramel, pop corn and creamy ice cream. I don’t know why this dessert is called Burnt Banana..?

The Forking Truth

My First Taste at Casa Corazon in Phoenix AZ was Worth a Fork!

Casa Corazon is a casual Mexican Restaurant located in Phoenix AZ. There are many other other Mexican Restaurants along this road so I was expecting that this newly opened Mexican Restaurant would be special and it is! They have two entrances and one is slightly awkward. You can use the front door but the side door might be closer to the lot that you parked in. You might find that you walked into the kitchen. Then someone greets you and tells you to pick a table in the dining room.

The dining room is very open and airy with lots of natural light coming in from the large windows. There’s exposed brick, attractive wooden ceilings, a couple of interesting frescos and clean new crisp furniture.

They started us out with a colorful dish of complimentary hot tortilla chips and a bacon-ee bean dip. We were instructed to visit the Sala Bar and help ourselves so we did!

Plenty of salsas….what to pick?

I went with Pineapple, Chipotle and Jalapeño.

I really liked the Pineapple…..It was full of Pineapple and Chilies Flavors. The Chipotle tasted the I way I expected a smokey Chipotle Salsa would taste so it was good too. The Jalapeño was creamy and super mild…….It was the mildest of the salsas…..but it was good just super mild.

My Taco Platter Arrives.

I receive three single shell extremely fresh made tacos that are all generously stuffed. Up top is chicken, middle of the plate is arrachera (marinated skirt steak) and a grilled marlin taco. They gave us a yellow citrus to enhance the tacos….. lemon….or yellow lime (they have yellow limes in Mexico). The chicken taco needs a dab of salsa so I add Pineapple salsa to the chicken taco. It works…that is kind of fun. Where else can you eat a Pineapple Salsa Chicken Taco?  The next one I try is the Skirt Steak……I try some before I sauce it. WOW! This one is flavorful and very tender…….It’s much more flavorful than the chicken taco was. This one doesn’t really need salsa but I added a small amount of Chipotle salsa to it. I saved the Marlin Taco for last……Good thing because the Marlin Taco was the most flavorful and spiciest of the tacos…..It was really good! The Marlin Taco differed from the other tacos and was grilled. The fish was also grilled and was a little smoky. They grilled the fish till juicy along with seasoning and spicy peppers. It was yummy-licious! My plate also came with rice and beans. The rice tasted like it was fresh made and seemed buttery. It was also studded with a few vegetables. The Black Beans tasted just made and were sweet and creamy the way beans are when you cook them from dried.

My husband had an Enchilada Plate of Chicken, Cheese and Beef.

If the sauce looks a little bright and red to you that might be because you are looking at Corazon BEET and Chile Sauce and also red and green traditional sauces. I was too busy with my plate to try the enchiladas but I heard they were very good.

Our waitress was so cheerful and helpful. We both thought she must be an owner but she wasn’t. She was a  really great server!

That was my First Taste at Casa Corazon.

I’d say Casa Corazon is Worth a Fork!

2nd Taste at Geordie’s in The Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix AZ

The Wrigley Mansion was built by the Chewing Gum Mogul of Wrigley’s Gum William Wrigley Jr. and eventually was purchased by Geordie Hormel of Hormel’s Food Products that are……MANY many pork products and canned pork called Spam, LOTS of other meat products, Skippy Peanut Products, Chi-Chi’s Products, Wholly Guacamole, Herdez Products and many more!. The Mansion is a private club. But for a small fee $5.00 (that’s donated to charity……currently a dog charity…. you can be a member for a day and take a tour and or dine. Other reasonable options are offered. On my visit the front is under construction and it’s safer to enter from the valet entrance. I should add that the front has (or used to have) the longest trail of steep steps I ever walked. You had to be in excellent shape to do the front steps. Or at least it used to be that way….It looks like they are putting in new steps so it might be better after the construction is done. The valet side also has steps. I don’t know if this building is handicapped friendly.

When you enter you check in at the desk.

You can sign up for a tour, you are also free to roam around yourself and check out the charming decor or you can go straight off to dine. I forgot to photo the really cool antique operator’s switch board that is by the detailed carved entrance door.

But I took a photo in the Ladies Room….It’s just adorable! You have to see!

Then we went off to dine.

Walking threw to the Dining Room.

Here we are!

The dining room is very formal with big blue velvety high back chairs, set tables with linen and big windows with views of Phoenix.

Here’s my view from my seat.

They started us off with small thin slices of baguette and butter.

I started with Corn Gazpacho.

The chilled soup is refreshing and has a nice vinegar-ree tomato-like cucumber taste. Oddly I don’t taste corn. My husband doesn’t taste corn either……. The corn kernels in the center are tasteless…..However the soup does taste like gazpacho and is good, light and refreshing………it just lacks a corn taste that I was expecting.

Any who

The Smoked Salmon from Christopher’s was SUPERB and I hoped that since Chef Christopher is the Executive Chef at Wrigley Mansion that it might be similar here so I had to order it.

The Wrigley Smoked Salmon is colorful and pretty enough to be a picture. I think I might paint it and hang it on my wall……Brightly colored flowers, herbs, frilly greenery and oil enhance the fish. Tiny squid ink croutons, dabs of creme fraiche and caviar complete the plate. It’s not a bad plate in any way……..but …you know me if you read my reviews……………It’s not my intention to knock the Smoked Salmon plate from The Wrigley Mansion………but……….The Forking Truth is that even with the caviar it doesn’t compare to the Smoked Salmon from Christopher’s (pictured below). I just have to get out how spectacular Christopher’s plate was so you can understand the difference.

The fish seemed like a different quality. Christopher’s Smoked Salmon was cut with expert execution of a surgeon and was sliced paper thin. The Fish was silky and melted in my mouth. The rest of the plate was out of this world too.

Wrigley Mansion

To be fair I do need to note some pieces of fish were better than others. The Wrigley Smoked Salmon had several thicker smaller cuts placed together. This fish wasn’t so silky and was slightly leathery. It also was saltier and not as sweet tasting. ………….. Christopher’s was extraordinary and Wrigley was just good.

My husband went with the Spam Cubano Sandwich.

This sandwich is filled with roasted pork, lightly grilled Spam (a Hormel Product) whole grain mustard and a thin spread of mayonnaise (not listed on the menu) The sandwich arrived  pressed panini style and came with pickles and a Spam Can ( a cute nod to the Hormel Ownership) filled with mixed fries. I hear that this was a very good sandwich despite the thin spread of mayonnaise it contained. Both of us weren’t expecting the Cubano to be so generous in size.

I had room so I helped with a side of Summer Truffle Macaroni and Cheese.

It was creamy cheesy and satisfying. What arrived was Cellentani Pasta that’s prepared perfect in a creamy cheesy parmesan tasting sauce with a little bread crumb crunch on the top. Neither of us tasted the truffles but that is a good thing because that means they didn’t use artificial truffle aroma. For a $10.00 side you can not expect to taste real truffle as they are very expensive. Two ounces of fresh summer truffles cost $95.00 from Marky’s.

The Mousse Tower that Christoper is Famous for is on the menu and should still be divine at The Wrigley. But I didn’t go with that today.

The Famous Chocolate Mousse Tower from Christopher’s

My favorite dessert was the Lemon Tart from Christopher’s. It always has the perfect amount of lemon tart flavor combined with the perfect sweetness with a velvet mouth feel. The frozen ices in pastry shells were amazing too! Christopher’s was one of the few restaurants where the desserts were special and were just as amazing as the food.

So I made sure I saved room for it and tried the Lemon Tart from The Wrigley Mansion.

The Lemon Tart from the Wrigley is not as detailed, might differ slightly and does have a thicker crust. However it still does have a good lemon tart to sweet flavor.

Here was my first taste from Geordie’s at The Wrigley Mansion.

Polenta from the Wrigley Mansion

The Dinner I had at Wrigley Mansion from years ago

I remember the asparagus was loaded with salt and that smear of artichoke had flavors I don’t want to go back too.  I will also never forget the polenta tower.

The Polenta Tower was very strange, very stiff and Forking looked like it was on Viagra.

I was afraid to return to dine here again until I heard about Chef Christopher’s arrival this year.

My second visit was very improved in service and food from my first visit. Some things were better than other things but that is how it goes at nearly any restaurant.

The help were all very friendly and very professional.

I enjoyed the company, atmosphere and the professional service.

2nd Taste at Szechuan Cuisine in Glendale AZ – Spicier & even Better – with updates******

Szechuan Cuisine Restaurant is a casual restaurant in Glendale that serves a mix of American/Chinese Favorites and Szechuan Cuisine. They offer two menus but many items offered are on both menus…..BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME…….when you order Kung Pao off the regular menu it’s Americanized…….and when you order it off the White Menu it’s Szechuan……Just Chicken and lots of heat………This is  not a fancy restaurant but it’s certified clean with a grade “A” health inspection at this time August 2018.

The food I tried last week was pretty darn interesting, especially the Casserole Style Chicken.

Casserole Style Chicken

This food was way better than other Chinese Food I tried in Glendale and so many other dishes were calling my name so I had to come back and try some other things.

We started with an unusual dish called Pork Juicy Dumplings.

This is a hard to find dish that even people in New York are looking for.

You don’t just eat the dumplings.

You give them a little dip in the ginger/soy sauce.

Then you bite a little hole in the top and suck out the soup.

Now you can eat them.

The dumpling wrapper is very delicate so I recommend diving in there before the soup leaks out.

We shared two dishes and one was Water Boil Style Fish. The owner Paul was very hesitant  about me ordering this dish. He didn’t know if I knew what it was. I assured him that I was familiar with water boil and told him a few places I tried water boil at. He felt very relieved when I mentioned Szechwan Palace because he told me that he opened Szechwan Palace and also the other Chinese Restaurant at the Cultural Center but left to open Szechuan Cuisine when the Cultural Center got sold.

This dish was a big jolt of fire and very mouth numbing. The heat becomes fun and isn’t painful. For some reason it makes you happy when you eat it. The fish was very tender and this dish also contained bean sprouts and cabbage.

The dish that we both enjoyed most on this visit was another “New to us Dish we never had before”……It was the Spicy Chicken Noodle. This dish has no description on the menu…I thought it might be a soup but it was more than that.

This dish contains tender chunks of chicken leg meat on the bone, potatoes, peppers and noodles in an aromatic spicy and mouth numbing sauce. This dish had much more going on with it than the Water Boil Dish. Don’t get the wrong idea….The Water Boil was good but this dish was Special….It was a Magical Bowl of Yumminess!!!!! They didn’t make this dish as fiery as the Water Boil but it had more flavors and sensations going on.  We both thought it was delicious….Everything tasted different…when I got to the onions for some reason they tasted extra sweet to me. We were told that you need to wait to eat the noodles last….so we did. If you wait maybe 20 minutes to eat the noodles they pick up all these great extra flavors……This dish was really Forking Good!…….Maybe the best Szechuan Dish we tried so far….

Last week we tried-

Grandma Salad

Chongqing Spicy Fish

Casserole Style Chicken

We know the owner a little better now and his name is Paul. He told us that he opened Szechuan Palace and another restaurant in the Cultural Center called Beijing House. He said he left and opened this restaurant when the Cultural Center got sold. Now that Paul knows us he said that he wants to order for us when we come back………This is sort of Deja vu…….The former restaurant owner of Lucky’s King Wah Hong Kong Cantonese Restaurant used to do that too…………..

I think it’s really GREAT that Szechuan Cuisine is in Glendale AZ!

This visit was even better! Worth a Fork!

Worth a Fork!

3rd and 4th visits did differ……

For my third visit the owner wanted to pick for me and my my husband. I thought he’d pick out special plates for us…

We received.

Americanized Jalapeño Chicken and Duck that was on the dry side…..oh well. I guess he meant well. The plates weren’t horrible but not great enough to recommend.

For our 4th visit we tried Sour Spicy Cabbage Salad and Kung Pao of the Authentic Chinese White Menu.

The Sour Spicy Cabbage Salad was good and was made with some Szechwan Peppercorns. The Kung Pao was on the mild side in a thick sweet sauce and was made without Szechwan peppercorns. I was displeased that I got an Americanized Kung Pao Chicken..that is not what I ordered but nobody checked on us so I didn’t say anything…..

Seems like communication is a problem here………

I didn’t find a website or Facebook page for Szechuan Cuisine so you just have to visit them at 5158 W.Olive Ave. in Glendale AZ -7 days a week Lunch and Dinner.

2nd Taste at Restaurant Confluence in Carefree AZ – Worth a Fork!

Confluence is an upscale casual restaurant in Carefree Arizona. They serve unique detailed elevated Modern Cuisine and quality big pour wines in a casual cozy environment. They offer comfortable  indoor seating and outdoor seating with mountain views.

I enjoyed an amazing dinner here last month and thought I had to run out and have lunch there since I read on Facebook that they had fresh snapper just flown in and made into a lunch special.

We stated out by sharing one of the vegetable plates called Cucumber.

Here’s an up close look.

There are four unusual kinds of cucumber in here.  One might have been lemon cucumber and another was super unusual and very much like an actual finger lime….. there also was radish, shiso (possibly micro shiso), miso, finger lime and sesame seeds, cashew and maybe a few other things as I thought I tasted lemon grass and serrano peppers too. This was very unusual, complex and most of all thrilling in the mouth with so many delicious harmonizing flavors going on in it ….As much as I really loved this dish ……….and I really did I just wish I got a little more finger lime in the parts I tasted…….because finger lime is so special. But don’t get me wrong this was a fabulous dish.

I know most people are not familiar with finger limes that are sometimes referred to as fruit caviar because they burst in your mouth similar to caviar. They are tiny citrus fruits of different colors and most from America look like the picture below. (Finger Limes are also grown in Australia and come many beautiful bright colors.) You squeeze the fruit caviar out to use them. I used to find them at a few AJ’s Fine Food Stores around Halloween time but usually you have to special order this fruit from California if you want them. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE them and had to order this salad when I read finger limes were in the Cucumber Dish.

I read on Confluence Facebook Page today that fresh flown in snapper was going to be a lunch special. I asked about it and I was told they didn’t have it today. Latter the owner comes to our table, apologized to me and said, due to bad weather it wasn’t available. They took the snapper off the Facebook Page and I went with something else. For my meal I tried the Halibut Tacos. I had my choice of side salad, house made chips or a $2.00 up-charge for their amazing fries…….(the fries are famous here and are really great!)………. but I thought they’d be too heavy with what I was having so I went with salad.)

I started with the salad. It had a few types of arugula and other greens. What stood out about the salad was the texture of the greens. They had a crispness about them that was super fresh and different…really super crisp. It really was the simplest of salad but was prepared in a masterful way. The Halibut Tacos are packed with crisp cabbage, grassy cilantro, really tasty lime pickled onions, piccolo de gallo, cream fraiche on flour tortillas with lime wedges. What’s best about this dish is how well the halibut was prepared. Halibut is an unforgiving fish that was prepared moist and perfect. It can be difficult to prepare a small piece of halibut to perfection. You all know me….I have to tell The Forking Truth (that’s my thing incase you are unfamiliar with my blog). The Tacos were GOOD but these were explosively drippy tacos.

My husband had the Prime Rib Sandwich.

The Prime Rib Sandwich was served on crusty baguette and was packed with a mix of rare and medium thinly sliced tender Prime Rib. A creamy ultra flavorful Horseradish-Tallegio sauce embellished the juicy meat. Pickled red onions cut threw all the richness and peppery arugula was the finishing touch to the sandwich. This sandwich is very well made and also well thought out with a lot going on. The sandwich also came with a crisp house made pickle and what seemed like oil free seasoned thin crisp potato chips.

We are full and I wasn’t planning on dessert but they felt bad for me reading about the snapper that wasn’t available so they surprised us with a Vanilla Creme Brûlée. They sure didn’t have to do that…….but it was mighty nice of them.

As you can clearly see that this is a very detailed Cream Brûlée. It had a nice hard sugar crust that’s embellished with carefully carved marinated fruit and also adorned with tender shortbread cookies. It was a nice sweet ending to an incredible lunch!

Last visit was an incredible dinner…..among the best I had this year.

WOO-HOO! Szechuan Cuisine Restaurant finally opens in Glendale AZ ****With Updates

Szechuan Cuisine Restaurant has recently opened in Glendale Arizona. It’s not a fancy restaurant but they do offer wait service. They offer some American Chinese Favorites but they also offer Authentic Style Szechuan Cuisine.

Lots of interesting choices on the menu. It was hard to decide on what to try today.

We thought it was a good idea to start with what they call “Grandma Salad”

The salad is made of cabbage, roasted peanuts, garlic, onion and spicy fish sauce. The salad seems light, a little spicy but also is tasty.

We share the Casserole Style Chicken and the Chongqing Spicy Fish. Both are spicy.

Casserole Style Chicken

You have to see it this way too.

Casserole Style Chicken

The Casserole Style Chicken is NOT the American casserole that has cheese and a can of Campbell’s added to it this is completely something better and arrives in a metal bowl with a burning bottom that cooks the vegetables and makes a sauce. We were instructed to eat some of the meat first so the vegetables could cook. Some of the vegetables were lotus root, mushrooms, bean sprouts and celery. The chicken is extremely tender. It is spicy but not stingingly spicy. You can taste delicious flavors without the heat over powering the flavors. It’s very good.

Chongqing Spicy Fish

This Chongqing Spicy Fish is very mild delicate white fish (sole) that has been dusted in corn starch, cooked and picked up heat and flavor from the chili pods. It’s very delicate and just melts in the mouth. It’s salty but for some freakish reason that I don’t understand the salt taste good here…….It’s an interesting sensation.

WOW! My first visit was Worth a Fork!

Worth a Fork!

Our 2nd Visit was even better than the first visit. Had this incredible delicious complex and spicy dish called Spicy Chicken Noodle….It was Awesome. Had a super spicy Fish Hot Pot and Juicy Pork Dumplings…Soup filled where you suck the soup out and then eat….@nd visit was really great……

For our third Visit the owner wanted to pick food out for us so we let him since everything was so positive before.

We weren’t thrilled with what he picked for us…….

On the left is slightly dry duck and on the right is Americanized Jalapeño Chicken.

For our 4th visit we decided to just order off the white authentic Chinese Menu. We tried Sour Spicy Cabbage Salad and we ordered Authentic Kung Pao Chicken.

We both liked the Cabbage salad….but the Kung Pao Chicken wasn’t so spicy and was in a thick sweet sauce and wasn’t made with Szechwan Peppercorns. I was disappointed that they served me an Americanized Kung Pao when I ordered the Authentic Style….Nobody asked me how it was and the owner was absent or I would have told him…..

Seems like communication is a problem……

I haven’t found a website or Facebook page for Szechuan Cuisine. You are just going to have to visit them at 5158 W. Olive Ave. Glendale AZ. They are there 7 days a week lunch and dinner.

First Taste at Cocina Madrigal in South Phoenix AZ – Worth a Fork!

Cocina Madrigal is newly opened casual family friendly Restaurant in South Phoenix AZ that offers Unique Oaxacan/American Cuisine. It’s not a fancy place but it’s comfortable and cozy.

If you look at the menu there are many offerings you won’t find elsewhere such as – a variety of made to order guacamole, mesquite grilled romaine salad, crispy salmon, beef tenderloin platter, la diablo chicken pasta, jerk seasoned chicken five cheese macaroni and cheese, marinated chicken artichoke mushroom stack in soy mustard cream and a whole lot more! The Chef is obviously very talented. It was difficult to decide on what to order because they offered so many interesting choices.

We started with house made chips and salsa while we decided.

The salsa is outstanding. It’s full of all kinds of wonderful things. It’s very flavorful and hot but not too hot. We also received a super generously sized basket of hot fresh chips.

I decide on the Artichoke and Mushroom Stacked Chicken.

The Cilantro Pesto Marinated Chicken is really very tender and very flavorful, toasted Pepitas are a nice embellishment here. The soy sauce and mustard don’t stand out in the creamy sauce because it’s very balanced. It just taste good. Mushrooms and Artichoke adorn the chicken. The plate includes a generous portion of yummy mashed potatoes and fresh buttered vegetables are on the side.

My Husband had a Taco Plate.

Cocina Madrigal offers a variety of Taco Plates that are three of each. My husband asked if he could have three different ones and it wasn’t a problem at all.

All the tortillas for the taco are made fresh to order.

All three tacos are very detailed.

The Beef Taco contains, tender flavorful Chipotle Pomegranate Marinated Tenderloin, Fried Peppers, Gorgonzola Cheese and Onion Straws.

The Achiote Braised Chicken Taco contains Red Bean Pico, Avocado and Menonita Cheese.

The Tropical Fish Taco had grilled Maui Maui, Salsa Picante, Mango, Coconut Cabbage Slaw, Oaxaca Cheese and Salsa Fresca.

I tasted a small piece of each and every one of the tacos was delicious and very flavorful.

But I am kicking myself now for not trying the rojo beans epazote (vegetarian) and the rice. My husband kept going on how these beans were exceptional. He said that they aren’t those refried beans that you get everywhere. He said these beans were much better, full of flavors and were really delicious!

Somehow we were talked into the Churros for dessert.

These Churros are made FRESH TO ORDER! and stuffed with pastry cream!

They are SO HOT……but are so aromatic from the cinnamon. You have to sit there and smell them and then your mouth waters….you pick one up but they are still too hot …..you have to take in the aroma a little longer….and then you start drooling from the appetizing aroma.

Todays Fresh – Made – To – Order Churros flavor came with a little drizzled caramel and more pastry cream for dipping. We were told that they plan to change up the flavors now and then.

I have to say that these Churros were the best Churros I’ve ever tasted in my life. The Churro seemed light and free of oil with a pleasant sugary cinnamon-ee coating and it was filled with delicious pastry cream!

The Food was all flavorful and well executed. The service was exceptional. Our server knew everything about the food and was able to make helpful suggestions. The owner/Chef and manager all were very welcoming to us and also wanted to hear our options about the food.

I have to say my first visit to Cocina Madrigal was Worth a Fork!

My Trip to Ramen Hood in Scottsdale AZ – Worth a Fork!

Ramen Hood is a casual Ramen Restaurant located in Scottsdale AZ just off the 101 exit 38. When you enter you stop at the front of the counter and fill out your order on a check off list  for what you want in your Ramen or Rice Bowl.

The menu offers opportunity for lots of variety. Noodles or Rice, Five Broths (including vegetarian), Five Proteins, up to 24 complimentary toppings, extras and you can also order Specialty Add Ons like Gyoza, Karaage Chicken, and Steamed Bao.

For The Ramen Challenged picking things is easy but not dummy proof. It is possible to pick not so great choices…………such as- Karaage Chicken is breaded chicken and would be better suited to go with a rice plate than with a Ramen Bowl. It might be best to add on toppings that give great flavors. Toppings you might consider would be Green Onions, Shiitake Mushrooms, Togatashi Powder, Nori and Spicy Miso Paste. Your Taste may differ from mine but I think it’s essential to add on the Seasoned Soft Boiled Egg because these eggs are really special. It can take a day to prepare these seasoned soft boiled eggs and they add other flavors and interest to Ramen.

Then you pay at the end of the counter and open kitchen. You take a number and seat yourself. They offer a variety of seating choices, traditional tables, some 1/2 bench seating and a few walled cubical seating so you can dine with your lap top.

We soon get our Ramen Bowls delivered to us by the Ramen Chef.

We ordered different Ramen Bowls but they came out looking very similar. I really like the Ramen Noodles. They have more texture and chewiness than Italian Noodles. I thought the vegetarian broth was good until I added the spicy miso paste and then it was VERY GOOD. Lots of flavors going on. For my protein I picked the Teriyaki Chicken. It wasn’t the typical sweet tasting Teriyaki you might get at most American/Chinese Restaurants this chicken was delicious with a tasty char flavor and they gave me a good amount of it…..However my husband got pork as his protein and although it was very GOOD PORK he only received one paper thin slice of it in his bowl unlike the good amount of tasty chicken I received. I don’t know if they gave me extra noodles. I know my bowl was JAM PACKED so much I had trouble getting the noodles out at first. I know half way threw I was out of stomach room and I came in very hungry.

We also shared a Specialty, The Karaage Chicken. It’s Japanese Style Breaded Chicken that very tasty and a yummy Sriracha Mayonnaise is served with it.

This is very casual dining here at Ramen Hood. You clear your own plates and trash after you finish. Just like fast food style nobody ask you how things were or thanks you for coming.  Although Ramen Hood is fast food style in service the food is full service in taste for sure.

I would say Ramen Hood is Worth a Fork!

My Trip to Bertha’s El Sabor De Los Mochis in Phoenix AZ – Worth a Fork!

Betha’s El Sabor De Los Mochis is a Mexican Restaurant that serves up many Mexican favorites such as Mariscos ( ceviche, whole fish, marlin tacos), Tacos, Pozole (Hominy Meat Stew), Albondigas de Cameron (shrimp meatball soup), Breakfast, Burros, Menudo (tripe soup) and more!

This isn’t a fancy place but everything looks new and clean.

They started us off with fresh made chips and a very flavorful spicy hot salsa.

While we wait for our order a Mexican Game show is playing on the TV where people suddenly disappear and fall threw the floor depending on what their package reveals. Wow..how surprising…….odd but funny…….

Today I decided to try the Marlin Tacos because one of my favorite tacos I eat when I’ve visited  Mexico was a smoked marlin taco.  I haven’t found many Mexican Restaurants that offer the Smoked Marlin Taco. This is only the second restaurant in Metro Phoenix where I’ve found smoked Marlin Tacos.

The Marlin Taco here is good but very different than the smoked Marlin Tacos I had in Mexico.

This Smoked Marlin Taco starts off with a really great grilled house made (what taste like white corn) tortilla. I think the fresh made tortilla actually taste better than the tortillas I ate in Mexico. The Marlin here is all chopped with a texture similar to packaged tuna fish. The Marlin is very mild and sweet tasting it also has so little smoke to it  that neither me or my husband can taste the smoke. I do taste a fresh lively salsa in it and a mild melty cheese and it has a nice crunch from cabbage. This taco is almost like eating something that’s tastier and better than a quesadilla. This Taco is very unique.. The Cheese with fish seems sort of odd but this marlin is so sweet and neutral that it works…….I’ve never had one like this anywhere. It’s also larger than I was expecting….after all they were only $4.00 each…I thought they’d be smaller.

My husband started with a Cabeza Taco ($2.00).

The beef was tender and developed with flavors. A squirt of lime and a small amount of salsa makes this a tasty treat.

Then our meals arrive and I’m full but I try things anyway.

WOWWEE! This restaurant serves the BIGGEST Chiles Relleno in the whole world! Oh my gosh….The Mexican tomato sauce is nicely seasoned and is very good. The batter is the lightest I’ve ever had on a Chile Relleno inside is a big river of lots of melty mild cheese. My husband liked both the rice and beans. I thought the rice had nice seasonings but for me the rice was too mushy…..But that is the charm of home style cooking….Just like Mom used to make.  My husband said with the soft texture of the rice goes better with the beans that way………….to each his own…….

My husband tried the Chicken Enchiladas with Rojas and Verdes.

The Chicken inside the enchiladas was fresh, tender and developed with flavors. Sauces were both flavorful too. For me the Green Sauce had more bite to it….I liked it more than the red but both were good.

The service was friendly and welcoming. Sauces were very good. Beef and Chicken were fresh, prepared tender and both were developed with flavors. the House made Tortillas were excellent. The menu is intriguing and there’s a lot more to try!

What we tried today was Worth a Fork!
