Collins Bros. Chophouse Scottsdale AZ – Newly Opened

The Collins Bros. Chophouse is located in Scottsdale Arizona and is a sister…..or is it a “brother” restaurant of the chef Christopher Collins Common Ground Culinary Group of restaurants and catering. Across the street from this NEW Chophouse is “brother restaurant” Grassroots Kitchen & Tap, and also Sweet Provisions – Ice Cream, Candy, and Dessert Shop. Other “Brother” Restaurants are……. The Collins, The Macintosh, The Brotherly, Arcadia Catering, and soon to open St Urban.

The Collins Bros. Chophouse offers a very similar American Comfort food menu to the other Common Ground Restaurants but with a few Chophouse additions. They offer a rotating menu of seafood soups, fresh oysters, other starters, salads, burgers, sandwiches, rotisserie chicken,

The Rotisserie

house specialties and butcher shop. A few of those items are baby back ribs, Scottish salmon, Maryland style crab cakes, prime ribs, center cut filets, and a dry aged porterhouse. They also offer a children’s menu.

Outside they offer a patio with misters.

Inside was very busy and it was difficult to photo dodging servers, customers and management.

inside
bar and kitchen area

My husband started with the HH two buck shuck.

HH – Two Buck Shuck

Three fresh oysters with cocktail sauce and drawn butter. He said that they were fresh tasting but not the brine-ee type.

We shared another Happy Hour food and went with the cauliflower wings.

They have a crunchy panko type coating and are made with sriracha aioli and are topped with cilantro and sesame seeds. Tasty but they are more like nuggets than wings……They are good for most people but might be slightly salty to sensitive people.

For my main I went with the rotisserie chicken chophouse style.

It a half rotisserie chicken (breast, small thigh, tiny leg, with really perfect onion rings and Pommery mustard sauce. The chicken seems infused with good chicken flavors. I tried the thigh and that is juicy and good. The breast has good flavors but is a bit dry tonight. It’s tasty with the mustard sauce.

We also shared a side order of mixed greens.

They are fresh and seasoned nicely. They are a mix of greens. Some are spinach, it looks like Swiss chard in there and some greens are artichoke hearts.

My husband tried the bone-in veal parmesan (served Thursday – Saturday) with house made pasta, San Marzano tomato sauce, mozzarella and red pepper flakes.

He said the veal was tender but could have been seasoned more. I tasted a small piece of pasta and the sauce did seem bland. He thinks that the red pepper flakes might have been missing.

Desserts are not to be missed at the Collins Restaurants. I was too full for dessert tonight so I did take out a coconut cream pie because it is always a winner.

It’s not as pretty as a dine-in version but still is just as delicious the next day. It is really FORKING Delicious! Even my husband who is a hater of coconut cream pies loves it.

They gave me a second dessert. The butter cake…..Maybe by accident? Or maybe because the coconut cream pie looked sort of damaged?

It’s a very different looking butter cake. I’ve never seen one that looks like this before. Usually they are all melted and very gooey looking. They also gave us ice cream (that made it home on a 30 minute ride, whipped cream that is very buttery, and strawberry sauce. Both me and my husband have never liked butter cakes. I guess they just are too buttery for us…..But this Butter cake is different. It’s more like a pound cake….We can eat that…It’s just a good cake! YUM!

FnB Restaurant in Scottsdale AZ – June 2022 – Always Worth a Fork!

The amazing FnB Restaurant is located in the arts district of Scottsdale Arizona near to Old Town Scottsdale. The chef and co-owner is James Beard Award Wining chef Charleen Badman. She serves ever changing, seasonal, global, farm focused, sharing plates. The menu is mostly vegetable forward but always contains enough meat to please meat eaters. Arizona wines are always on the menu.

Inside are two main dining rooms. There is a third room with a bar that often is used for parties and a small patio that in good weather expands out quite a bit.

There is always so many interesting dishes on the menu. It is always hard to choose what to get. We ALWAYS order more than we need and take some home.

After you order they always start you off with high quality delicious bread and high quality olive oil.

Tonight we started by sharing the watermelon, peaches, goat feta, Mexican tarragon, cucumber and lime plate.

They were nice enough to split this plate in half. It looks sort of plain but the produce is fresh plucked and taste better than what you would find at any supermarket. The cucumbers are so crisp…I’ve never had cucumbers this crisp before.

We tried Puerto Rican corn and cheese fritters with lime aioli and cilantro.

They are small and tasty. They are like a mild fluffy soft corn bread. The aioli os very lime-ee.

We also tried the heirloom tomato, Jasmin rice, fish sauce, shaved celtuce, herbs, and new onion plate.

I thought this plate had the most flavor play…..The high quality fresh tomatoes and herbs make this dish. I was full at this point but managed a few bites of the California black grouper with rancho gordo beans, tomato, spring onion and chermoula.

The fish is perfect and everything is delicious.

My husband thought that we wouldn’t have enough food and also ordered another small (but not so small) plate.

This is the Creole style bbq shrimp with Worcestershire sauce on top of buttered baguette bread.

Not all but a few previous dishes we tried were-

broccoli with tangerine aioli and pistachios

trout rillete

Mexican grouper and in the corner is corona beans with grilled radicchio, salsa verde, provalone

salmon gefilte fish, pickled beets, pickled eggs, beet horseradish, and buttered matzo – also crunchy radish salad in the corner

snap peas, macadamia nuts, mint, tarragon

crispy chic peas, beet falafel plate, award winning leek dish

Passover at Veneto Trattoria & Easter at The Italian Daughter in Scottsdale Arizona

Veneto Trattoria is a Venetian Style Italian Restaurant located in Scottsdale Arizona. For many years now they have offered Passover Dinners in Venetian Style to honor the Jews of ancient Italy. Incase you didn’t know Passover is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the Israelites liberation from slavery from the Egyptians. Foods for Passover are a little different and are unleavened.

They offer seating on the patio.

It’s pretty hot today so we picked indoor seating.

Got sat in the next dining room.

They started us out with matzoth with this delicious honey nut marmalade. (They should bottle and sell that marmalade…It was really great!)

Next came polpette with brodo di matza e pollo alla Veneziana (homemade Venetian style matzah ball soup) (This was better than from a famous place that sells this soup daily that begins with a “C”)

Three different main courses were offered (sole, stuffed chicken, braised brisket)

I went with the sogliola alla mosaica (petrale sole, tomato raisin sauce braised fennel, Brussels sprouts)

My husband went for the brisket called brisket in salsa Pasquale (dried plum sauce, braised fennel, Brussels sprouts)

They were extra generous with dessert. They gave us each a delicious torta tradizionale di mandorce per pesach (almond cake with chocolate sauce)

Delicious but we really only needed one so we took one home for latter.

That was Passover at Veneto Trattoria.

Easter is a Christian celebration commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Italian Daughter offered a very nice reasonably priced menu for Easter. They offered pretty much their whole menu plus some extras.

The Italian Daughter is a full service Italian Restaurant located in North Scottsdale Arizona. This restaurant is brought to you by the daughter Melissa of the award wining late chef and restauranteur Tomaso Maggiore. This restaurant is a tribute to Melissa’s late father.

Father and Daughter photo

They offer bar seating. Traditional table seating, high tops, and patio seating.

They started us off with complimentary crusty bread and soft herb butter.

For our appetizer we shared the butternut squash purses.

They were in a creamy Frangelico cream sauce with amaretti dust. We had the pancetta on the side.

I had the Roman Salmon. It was a very generous portion. I got a nicely prepared moist piece of salmon in a lemon-ee white wine sauce. The plate was adorned with tender crunch asparagus, cauliflower, creamy risotto and was topped with a long stem artichoke. I do note that the risotto was especially good. It’s very rare that you get decent risotto out.

My husband enjoyed the slow braised short rib.

It came in a Demi/tomato sauce with asparagus and gnocchi.

I saved half my food for another meal so I’d have room for dessert.

The limoncello cake is always a perfect sweet ending.

Liz Modern Asian Restaurant Scottsdale AZ – Hong Kong Style Food & Asian BBQ

Liz Modern Asian Restaurant is located in Scottsdale Arizona in The Scottsdale Quarter. This is a small full service restaurant that offers appetizers like steamed buns, won ton soup, pear and grain salad, Hong Kong Style foods like fried rice, noodle dishes, cashew chicken and vegetables, They also offer Asian barbecue like char siu chicken and char siu pork, roast pork, pork belly, and Asian bbq brisket. They offer craft natural sodas, wine and beer.

I was going to try the citrus hibiscus orange soda but they were out of that one today.

Inside is small and very plain.

inside

They have three outside tables so we sat at one of them since it was still nice outside.

We started out with brisket egg rolls.

The brisket egg roll was fresh fried to order. It came out light and crispy with a side of sweet and sour sauce. They also offered us chili sauce and really tasty Chinese mustard. I didn’t get a true taste of the Asian BBQ Brisket here that I thought I would. I know that because it isn’t on the menu but they suggested for my husband to get a sampler plate and the brisket there was from a tastier batch.

Not on the menu….Sampler plate

He got all kinds of Asian BBQ. char siu chicken, char siu pork, roast pork, pork belly, Asian bbq brisket, vegetable of the day (green beans, mushrooms, onions), and rice. His favorites were the pork dishes.

I got the char siu chicken.

char siu chicken

They served me white meat chicken that was very tender and developed with Asian flavors and it was drizzled with a brown sweet sauce that taste similar to hoisin sauce. The meat was studded with today’s vegetable (green beans, mushrooms, onions) and came with a big portion of white rice. This lunch plate is very large and for me this is two meals (and I’m not the smallest eater) but for some people it’s just one meal.

When I ordered I didn’t know that they also had this dish prepared more Asian bbq style with dark meat chicken. They told me so far most of their customers don’t eat dark meat chicken. They assumed that I didn’t eat dark meat chicken so I wasn’t asked when I ordered. Near the end of my meal they did offer to give me a plate of dark meat chicken…That was terribly nice but I declined only because I had way more food that I can eat still left.

We recommend the bbq pork dishes and to ask if they have the dark meat char siu chicken.

The HOT Chick Restaurant of Scottsdale AZ – Poultry in Motion – Worth a Fork!***Was CLOSED and now OPEN AGAIN!

********UPDATE was CLOSED FOR BUSINESS during pandemic and is NOW OPEN AGAIN*****The HOT Chick Restaurant recently opened in Scottsdale by Old Town. This is a FUN casual chicken restaurant that offers a bar, games, videos to watch and of course food with a retro 70s vibe.

The bar

They also offer all kinds of seating. You can be by the video games.

One of the patios

You get full service only if you sit at the bar.

For all other seating you order yourself at the trailer that is located behind the bar.

The trailer is the counter where you order and pay if you are not sitting at the bar.

Here’s the menu. All the chicken is organic, free range, antibiotic and hormone free.

They offer Fried Chicken in half or whole in original or Hot Chick, 2 kinds of wings, chicken nubs, snacks and sides, salads, seven varieties of chicken sandwiches but ONLY ONE is HOT Chick. They also offer a brunch menu limited to the weekend and two desserts.

We walked up to the trailer and ordered and paid. Took a pager with us and sat at a booth. We checked out the cocktail menu while waiting. In reasonable time our pager was blinking and buzzing.

I got the HOT Chick sandwich.

It’s a crispy hot chicken breast with house slaw and house pickle on a rich eggy bun. (they also had a condiment area and we picked up deviled egg sauce and some sort of Thai sauce)

First I taste a small amount of chicken by it’s self……WOW is THAT FORKING CRISPY and MIGHTY Flavorful……it’s also moist! It is HOT but VERY Flavorful. I think around a number 4 Thai Hot out of 5. I can taste a lot of flavors like cayenne, but there is something in there that makes the cayenne taste very delicious, there’s something very sweet but it’s balanced, not too sweet…..not sure but I think a taste some secret crushed potato chips…? Well whatever all this is …….This is Forking AWESOME with well made slaw and well crafted pickles. It’s getting very messy with sauce or and juices squirting out everywhere…….It’s a DELICIOUS HOT MESS! It’s also a Forking hum YUM Dinger! (only $9.00…..WHAT THE CLUCK!…..is that a misprint?………..only $9.00…… ((price is subject to change..))

Mu husband ordered the 1/2 hot chicken…..but it was cut into 6 pieces. It came with house made biscuit and house made pickles. I think it was suppose to come with maple butter?

He got a wing (cut in two), thigh, breast (cut in two) and a leg. I took a small bite out of the thigh. NO FOWL PLAY HERE! The Thigh is Forking awesome……Crunchy succulent flavorful…….really Really Great…..Not sure but seemed hotter than the HOT Chick sandwich…maybe because it didn’t have the slaw, bun and pickles to cool things down…? . (only $12.00) subject to change

We shared two of the sides The pimento macaroni and cheese and the green goddess green beans. ($5.00 each and subject to change)

pimento macaroni and cheese and the green goddess green beans

The pimento macaroni and cheese was topped with crunchy chicken skin. I taste the macaroni……..This is smoky……to me it doesn’t taste like pimento because the smoke taste over powers everything else. My husband taste it and agrees that it is smoky. The green goddess green beans are more of a cold salad with a lot of arugula and smoked almonds.

I’ll say find that HOT Chick and buy a sandwich and all the day you will have good Cluck!

1st Taste at The Root and Soul in Scottsdale AZ – Worth a Fork! Slight update at end with 2nd Taste****UPDATE NOW CLOSED for BUSINESS

UPDATE******NOW CLOSED FOR BUSINESS*******The Root and Soul is a full service Soul Food Restaurant that recently relocated in Scottsdale Arizona. This restaurant originally opened in the DeSoto Market less than a year ago only weeks before the DeSoto Market was to close. This new location of The Root and Soul looks to be a mix of classic and a bit of contemporary with a bar. The menu is mostly (but not entirely) broken down to meals that include two sides, Sandwiches that come with House Cut Fries, Big Plate Specials and MORE!

We both were torn on ordering a few different menu items. I was going to go with the Blackened Redfish Platter as the Redfish is flown in fresh from Alabama most days but today it didn’t make it in yet so I went with my second choice The Carolina Spicy Chicken Sandwich.

It’s a non-conventual beauty! (and my photo doesn’t do it justice……)

This Carolina Hot Chicken is unique and unlike any other hot chicken sandwich I’ve tried. It starts with bread that is soft and neutral and it sponges up all the goodness from the chicken. This bread lets the chicken have it’s staring roll. This chicken is very fresh, plump and very moist boneless breast meat. It’s coated with an extremely crisp thin batter that’s drizzled with a not too stingy but just enough heat tangy hot sauce and is countered with the creamy (and not drippy…yeah!) slaw. Each bite is delicious! I think even if you don’t like spicy you might still LOVE this sandwich……because it is so tasty!

I got to try the Millionaire Macaroni and Cheese. WOW-wee it’s very rich with loads of real cheese and buttery goodness. With this one you have to add the seasoning if you want seasoning. Loads of Cheese….It’s not dry.

My husband went with the Jambalaya and a side of Red Beans and Rice. (red beans and rice I forgot to photo)

He was very surprised that he got a very generous amount of very tender perfectly prepared shrimp. He said the plate was delicious as well as the red beans and rice. He said they both were very good and that means something because he doesn’t usually like this sort of food outside of New Orleans.

My first taste at The Root and Soul in Scottsdale was Worth a Fork!

The Forking Truth

We went back for a 2nd taste.

This time tried the Big Daddy Plate.

The fried chicken is delicious. The chicken is very tender, very juicy and very flavorful. The chicken has a well seasoned delicious crispy crust. I got a piece of red fish…The fish is moist and mild tasting…The coating here has little flavor…not sure if it was made correctly and found out that the son of the owner just started cooking. Hush puppies are fried nicely and are fluffy, seem free of oil and are seasoned. The Southern style cabbage is steamed and has lots of pepper in it….I was told that this wasn’t made correctly. My husband said the red rice and beans were good.

It seems the chicken fried steak was a little off today.

It’s sort of tough and chewy and lacks seasoning and flavor…..but we waited a long time today for it so my husband didn’t feel like sharing his thoughts on it at the time. The corn bread is fine but the macaroni and cheese is also a little off today….Hopefully the son will improve his cooking skills. The management was understanding on our complaints and took a little off our bill today.

My Trip to The Bourbon Cellar in Scottsdale AZ

The Bourbon Cellar is located in a strip mall in North Scottsdale Arizona. They specialize in serving a variety of craft bourbons, craft sandwiches and craft burgers of Prime in-house ground Filet, Bison, Elk, Venison, Cajun Turkey and Veggie.

At the time of this review they are newly opened and are going with the lunch menu as an all day menu and offer three course dinner specials at night. (subject to change at any time)

Inside the atmosphere is clean and neat. It’s woody with brick walls.  Gracing the walls are slices of Barrels and stacked wine bottles.

Seating is available at the bar, dining room and front and side patios.

The side patio is lush with plantings and also has a water feature.

I’ve been to the original location before and enjoyed the Prime Filet Ground in House Burger. It was a very detailed burger and might have been the only burger I’ve ever tried that was so delicious and flavorful it didn’t need a sauce.

Pime Filet Ground in House Burger

The generously sized burger is served on an apple cider egg bun. It’s packed with lots of lettuce and a tomato slice and is topped with a wasabi deviled egg….(what a treat!) I didn’t have this burger this time but my husband had to have it again. He was somewhat upset that again they didn’t prepare it medium-rare like he asked for and got it sort of medium on one side and medium-well on the other side……But he said just like last time it was a juicy flavorful burger that was delicious……but he would have loved if they prepared it medium/rare. Next time he is going to ask for a rare burger. (I note that we do go to many restaurants and very few…actually almost none of the restaurants have a cook that can prepare a medium/rare burger…The only restaurant I can remember where my husband got a medium/rare burger was Amuse Bouche in Surprise AZ under the original owner)

What impressed me last time about this burger was that this was maybe the only time I had a super flavorful juicy burger that didn’t need any sauce or dressing to be delicious.

This time I tried the Ground Cajun Turkey Burger with Bourbon Pickles as a topping. Burgers come with hand cut fries or slaw…

This Turkey Burger was juicy with really good super flavorful grill marks on it. It was flavorful but in a very different way than the filet burger…..It was good but I think I needed different toppings than what I picked to make it special like the Filet Burger. Maybe instead of bourbon pickles I should have went with something like raw onions and avocado????

That was my trip to The Bourbon Cellar in Scottsdale AZ.

AZCENTRAL Wine & Food Experience Day Two November 4th in Scottsdale AZ

The AZCentral Wine & Food Experience is a two day food festival that in 2018 took place at Monterra at Westworld in Scottsdale AZ. Around thirty mostly local restaurants participated. Wine, Beer, Water and some Liquor & Cocktails were also offered. At the festival were a few cooking demonstrations. Sunday’s headliner was Celebrity Chef Aaron Sanchez. He was suppose to be on stage at 1:15….just fifteen minutes after the general admission was allowed in. Just like yesterday all the seats were taken and it was standing room only. I waited for a little while for the Chef Sanchez but not long enough to see him come out….

Phoenix Marriott Resort in Tempe Top of the Rock Restaurant at the Buttes made something called Foie Stuffed Dango and Smoked Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies.

Frasher’s Steakhouse offered Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Butter Cake.

One of the best things I tried on Sunday was the detailed Chocoflan from Talavera at The Four Seasons.

From Proof was a Thanksgiving Hand Pie.

Clam Chowder French Fries from Chula Seafood

Assorted Pastas and Tomato Salad from AJ’s Fine Foods.

Beef and Chorizo Meatloaf from Frank and Alberts.

I tried a Habanero Peach Hand Pie from The Pie Hole.

Beef Barbacola from Taco Chelo.

From Cartwright’s was Smoked Sockeye and Wild Game Chili……

Bella Gusto Urban Pizzeria offered Salted Carmel Pannacotta and Saffron Shrimp Rice Balls.

The Dabba offered Aloo Mattar and Chicken Tikka Masala.

Quiessence offered Pumpkin Parmesan Soup, Beef Carpaccio in Parmesan Tacos and Foie Gras Mousse on Macaroons. That’s one fancy spread!

I didn’t write down any notes so………I think it was Bison from Different Point of View.

From J&G Steakhouse was Beef Tenderloin and Wild Shrimp Ceviche. The Beef I tried here was the best beef I tried of the two days.

John & Yoko Dessert from Super Chunk.

……A Lamb Dish from The Boulders.

Spinato’s Pizza…I was waiting for the Broccoli Crust but got a plain……You can find these local pizzas in your grocer’s freezer!

Modern Market made Blueberry and Cheese Sandwiches…………………………..

The Handlebar Diner did Lamb barbacola Chili Colorada over Queso Fundito Macaroni and Cheese. I didn’t try this but my husband said it was one of his favorites.

Hickman’s offered their version of Deviled Eggs……1/2 hard boiled egg topped with aioli and bacon.

Beef Taco on fresh made corn tortilla from Tacos Tijuana.

It was a Sweet Ending from Sweet Republic…..The Cucumber Mojito Sherbet was refreshing, On the left was a Baked Alaska.

Day two was all this and even more! Several participants from yesterday were here again and most of them were serving the same food again.

Again like yesterday the participants were mostly a surprise.

Most of what was printed in the paper differed from who was here.

All in all the festival was a success except for one thing that I forgot to photo. The wine glasses we used were stemless and were difficult to carry around. Usually at food festivals we use wine yolks to carry around the wine glasses so our hands are free to eat and get food.

www.wineandfood.azcentral.com

That was day two of the Azcentral Wine & Food Experience 2018.

First Taste at Parma Italian Roots in Scottsdale AZ – Worth a Fork!

Parma Italian Roots is a West Coast Style Italian Restaurant located in North Scottsdale Arizona. They use quality ingredients and the kitchen is equipped with a wood burning oven. The chef is highly decorated and worked in impressive restaurants such as the French Laundry and also worked in a Michelin Starred Restaurant, a Resort and also under well known chef Brian Malarky…..It’s hard to believe he crammed in so much of an impressive work history since he has yet to turn thirty years old.

The restaurant has a rich look to it inside and out…….

Also a collection of pillows across the bench…….

The tables are set with fancy cut glass water glasses and very heavy rich modern silverware. For seating there is a mix of modern blue velvet chairs, metal chairs, benches, booths, bar and outdoor patio seating that I was told was dog friendly.

Our server was friendly and welcoming. We ordered and our meals were served in a timely manner.

I got the 1/2 Salmon Sandwich with the Truffled Panzanella Salad. The salad was a treat because it was made with these really ripe sweet heirloom tomatoes, basil, mizzuna, buffalo mozzarella, zucchini and toasted bread. Who wouldn’t enjoy a salad like this……everything in it was delicious. It was like a bowl full of prizes. The sandwich was just the right size I think for most people……Not too big and not too small. It was quality charred bread that might have been hollowed out…It wasn’t as thick as it looks. It was filled with quality buttery Ora King Salmon, vegetables and this tasty Salsa Verde. I think this platter was a bargain at $13.00 (***of course price is subject to change)

My husband had the Half Veal Meatball Sandwich with the HALF house made PASTA OPTION….YES I said half pasta option……How different and interesting!!!!!

WOW! Here was House Made Campanelle with Truffled Pesto, Toasted Pistachios and House Made Ricotta that was very good and that alone I think was worth the $13.00 it cost but he also got the Veal Meatball Sandwich Too. (****I wouldn’t be surprised if the pricing for the 1/2 sandwich platter goes up) The Veal Meatball Sandwich was prepared on quality charred bread. Meatballs seemed like they were simmered in Pomodoro Sauce and came with a blanket of Provolone and Parmesan Cheese. The meatballs were very tender and were flavored well.

We decided to share a Limoncello Dessert.

It was frosty…It seemed light and kind of refreshing. It was like gelato…..but with this kick of Limoncello sauce. This one isn’t for kids……..

We enjoyed our first taste at Parma Italian Roots in North Scottsdale.

I’d say it was Worth a Fork!
