Dining with Dogs in Metro Phoenix AZ August 2016

We're off to Leo's Island BBQ in Peoria AZ

We’re off to Leo’s Island BBQ in Peoria AZ

Dining with dogs is just a fluff story of taking my dogs out to eat. This isn’t full blown reviews on restaurants. This is just a monthly story about taking my dogs out to eat. There are some rules for dining with dogs. Your dogs must sit by your side. Dogs are not permitted to sit on restaurant chairs or to eat off restaurant plates. Remember not all restaurant patios are dog friendly and you should call a restaurant to verify if it’s ok to bring your dog because some restaurants out there go from being dog friendly to not being dog friend and others have certain rules about the size of your dog. You also must be up with the current list of dogs that aren’t safe for a dog to eat. Just because a food is good to you doesn’t mean your dog won’t suffer serious illness from common foods on menus. Onions, garlic, wine, grapes, vinegar, chocolate, avocado, artificial sweeteners, macadamia nuts are not all but are among the foods that dogs shouldn’t eat.

It has been brutally hot in the metro Phoenix area for the past month or so. We had somewhere around 30 days in a row of over 110 degrees F. We just had a monsoon and the temperate went down to 85 degrees F so we thought we could take the dogs out so we went to Leo’s Island BBQ that specializes in the Hawaiian Plate Lunch. A typical plate lunch is lots of meat, lots of rice some steamed cabbage, creamy macaroni salad served up in a styrofoam dish that cost less than $10.00.

I had the Grilled Maui Maui Fish.

IMG_4735

I forgot to photo my plate but from what you can see in the above photo I got a ton of food.

My husband got the BBQ Beef and BBQ Chicken Combo.

IMG_4732

Everything was great like it always is.

IMG_4737

“HEY, You don’t need all that food send some the FORK over to me.” I don’t have all day so make it fast.”

It got forking hot the very next day….This was one of the hottest Summers in Phoenix AZ History. It’s so hot I fear for people with plastic surgery…bet it forking melts….

The next two weekends we only took the dogs threw the Burger King Drive Threw for an egg, cheese and sausage croissant.

"Oh...what are we getting?"

“Oh…what are we getting?”

Near the end of the month we had a nice cooler weekend and thought we could take the dogs to Banh Mi Bistro Vietnamese Eatery in Phoenix.

"It got Forking HOT fast!" "We're screwed"

“It got Forking HOT fast!” “We’re screwed”

Somehow the 85 degree F temperature suddenly got to an uncomfortable 93 degrees within a few minutes so we just did take out. This time my husband got a BBQ Pork Banh Mi (The photo below is a Shaken Beef Banh Mi with $1.00 extra beef from Banh Mi Bistro that looks similar)

IMG_3681

and I got the Chicken Rice Plate again because it’s very tasty, I enjoy it and also a more healthy meal. I shared a bunch of the chicken with my dogs and I give the egg roll to my husband. Usually I also only eat half the rice because they give a double portion. If I didn’t share this plate it could be two meals.

I didn’t photo the take-out but the food is the same as the picture above. Lots of DELICIOUS flavorful dark meat chicken, a simple but fragrant fresh salad and a generous serving of rice.

Hopefully September will be cooler and we’ll be able to dine out with Dogs again.

New Weird and Different and Special Edition Foods out There August 2016

IMG_4110

There is always something “new” “WIERD” or “different” out there. I never know what I’ll come across when I go to a store. I never seen Elysian Space Dust IPA before. To me it doesn’t look appetizing. It looks like  Little Sprout

Green Giant Canned and Frozen Vegetables....went out of business some time ago because they were purchased by another company.

Green Giant Canned and Frozen Vegetables….went out of business some time ago because they were purchased by another company.

from the Green Giant canned and Frozen Vegetables forking throwing up. Who the fork wants to drink sparkly threw up from a little weird looking anthropomorphic green sprout.

IMG_4121

Here are assorted fruit flavored marshmallows…….Eat too many of them and YOU can fart a rainbow!

IMG_4388

Banana Bagels…oy vey …these bagels would taste forking terrible with smoked fish or eggs.

IMG_4310

Cheetos Crunchy Wild Habanero junk food. The bag makes them look like all fun and games……till you rub your eyes with the orange Wild Habanero Dust residue.

IMG_4474

Rosemary Truffle Popcorn sounds forking tasty.

IMG_4475

Nori Sesame Popcorn also sounds forking tasty to me.

IMG_4446

Sriracha salsa also just doesn’t seem right to me because Sriracha and Salsa don’t taste the same. This one is weird to me. It’s like mixing Thai Food with Mexican Food….OH……dah…….. it is actually mixing Thai Food with Mexican Food…

IMG_5020

Sriracha Taco Sauce is also weird to me for the same reasons I just mentioned. WTFork?

IMG_5025

Here’s Sriracha Roasted Cashews….because you don’t really want to forking eat cashews. You really only forking want to suck down a bottles of Sriracha all day long. Every forking thing you can imagine is forking Sriracha flavored except for forking Oreos. …….so far…

IMG_5024

And how can life go on without a new forking flavor of Oreo Cookies. Here is Artificially Flavored Blueberry Pie for your guilty pleasure. (p.s……Look at the cookie with that blue filling….it looks like a forking toothpaste filled cookie to me)

IMG_5026

Blueberry Chocolate is new and possibly delicious????? But it says on the package with other natural flavors….WTFork….what other natural flavors??????? snot, pig ears….glands of beaver? I don’t want to know.

The next one is pretty forked up but in a different scary way…….

IMG_4448

Who the FORK in America is going to buy bottled water from Mexico? We love Mexican Food but they always tell Americans not to drink the water from Mexico don’t they….So why the FORK are we going to buy Mexican water unless someone wants a date with the toilet. Just look at the illustration on the box. That woman might be puking from her own water.

That was the NEW, WEIRD, DIFFERENT and Special Editions for August.

I don’t know WTFork I’ll see next but you can bet the Pumpkin Spice will be rolling out!

Deseo at The Westin Kierland Resort Scottsdale AZ – Worth a Fork

IMG_5100

Deseo is Modern Upscale Latin Cuisine located in the beautiful Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale AZ. They offer a comfortable traditional looking dining room with large windows to view the beautiful desert plantings that surround the resort. They have an open kitchen and you might be able to get a seat at “The Rail” (seats that loop around the open kitchen) to see the kitchen action and make conversation with the Chefs.

We were seated at “The Rail” and got to see the action.

IMG_5105

The started us off with hot steamy out of the oven yucca rolls and soft creamy butter that melted right into the roll.

IMG_5107

We started with what was called “Rainbow” on the menu.

IMG_5110

It was a mix of fresh tasting fish, salmon, tuna and another mild fish that was in white soy citrus and pickled jalapeños. It was refreshing and light. At the time it seemed like the best ceviche I ever had.

We also shared a Wagyu Beef Empanada that was very detailed.

IMG_5112

The Empanada sat in spiced tomato sofrito and was garnished with green apple slaw. The purple dots are some sort of huitlacoche sauce. This was the most high end empanada I ever had anywhere for sure.

For dinner I had the Big Eye Tuna Encebollado.

IMG_5115

Now this dinner was different than I expected. I was expecting a cumin crust. But got a Black Cumin Crust that doesn’t taste the least bit like cumin. Black cumin looks and taste very similar to caraway seeds. Actually I enjoyed the light sprinkle of Black Cumin over the sweet tomatoes. That’s a new taste for me that I will remember.

The fish tasted good in the light refreshing fruity tomato consommé and the accents of pickled shallots, and mini yucca dumplings added more interest to the dish.

My husband had the Duroc Pork Chop.

IMG_5114

The pork chop was covered with a reddish mole that wasn’t bitter with lots of flavors. All kinds of interesting garnishes surrounded the plate such as spiced pepita brittle, a corn tamale, shaved baby carrots and apple.

Sadly I was too full for dessert 🙁

Yes Deseo is Worth a Fork and YES You would drive across town to dine here.

Dishes I had at Deseo on my last visit were-

Sautéed Celery with Herbs, Calabrian Chili Pepper and Parmesan Recipe

Sautéed Celery with Herbs, Calabrian Chili Pepper and Parmesan

Sautéed Celery with Herbs, Calabrian Chili Pepper and Parmesan

Celery is an over looked and under used vegetable and can be a delicious vegetable course in a meal. Think about everything you add celery to in recipes and the flavors and then it’s easy to turn celery into a delicious side dish. One of the tricks to delicious celery is that you have to peel the ribs just like you peel a carrot. The oil that the celery gets cooked in will get infused with flavors that will penetrate the celery to make it tasty.

Ingredients for 2 servings

2 cups celery – cleaned – peeled and cut into bite size pieces – save the leaves and put them to the side

1 sprig rosemary

1 sprig sage – just the leaves

2 sprigs thyme

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter

1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 Calabrian Chili Pepper – chopped fine

1 garlic clove – mashed fine

sea salt – fresh cracked to taste

black pepper – fresh cracked to taste

Parmesan Cheese – shredded to taste

Directions

Use a small fry pan and place it on medium high heat with the butter and oil.

When the butter is almost melted add the rosemary, sage and thyme to the pan and cook till herbs are crisp. (this is only a few minutes) Remove the herbs and let drain on a paper towel.

Turn down the heat to medium.

Add the chili and garlic and mix around well and then add the celery. Cover with foil until the celery is tender crisp. ( a few minutes)

Stir in the celery leaves and they only need up to a minute to wilt.

Add the fresh cracked salt and pepper and stir.

Plate up and add one of the fried herbs and fresh shredded parmesan cheese to the top .

Enjoy

Sometimes You Eat at Places that Aren’t for You.

Sautéed A dog?..........

Sautéed A dog?……….Did they sauté A dog?…….

Sometimes you eat at places that aren’t for you. Sometimes it doesn’t mean that these are bad places….It just means the food isn’t your style but might be someone else’s style.

A beautiful new casual restaurant recently opened in Scottsdale AZ called The Chicken Scoop. This is a restaurant that specializes in Chicken Salad. They offer 14 varieties of Chicken Salads in a variety of scoops and accompaniments. I love chicken and think it is the most delicious of all meats when prepared well. This restaurant seemed like a very good choice for me so I wanted to try The Chicken Scoop.

My husband and I both pick the two scoop platters. Two scoops of chicken salad, a side and a small  pudding “scoop.”

IMG_4967

I got Buffalo Chicken salad and Spicy Thai Chicken Salad and I picked fresh fruit as my side order.

The chicken salads truly don’t taste bad. Some were more tasty than others but none of the four taste bad but the texture was soooooooooooooo off-putting to me.

IMG_4971

It’s all smooth. No celery or onion. No chucks of chicken. It’s like you made chicken salad, remove the vegetables and just put it in a blender. They give you a basket of crackers to eat with your chicken salad but I would prefer to pay extra to get some crunch like from celery sticks or other crunchy vegetables.

I guess if I just had dental work or falling out or missing teeth this might be the first restaurant I would want to eat all. You don’t need teeth to eat the chicken salads I tried.

IMG_5007

These smooth chicken salads just aren’t for me but I will consider this place again the next time I get dental work done.

IMG_5009

I also ate at a Tex-Mex Restaurant that’s been on my Bucket List for a long time.

The Carlsbad Tavern Scottsdale AZ

The Carlsbad Tavern Scottsdale AZ

This restaurant has a fun atmosphere.

IMG_4977

They have a nice patio with a big water feature.

IMG_4980

The inside looks like a cave.

I ordered the Filet Mignon.

IMG_4989

My Filet had nice looking grill marks but didn’t pick up any flavor from the wood grill. My husband and I both tasted the meat and both of us thought it was unseasoned. I’m not a big fan of unseasoned meat. So the steak was mine but wasn’t really for me.

Sadly I also wasn’t a fan of the mushroom and cheese enchiladas that came with my steak. The enchiladas seemed sort of dried out.  I thought the mushrooms inside were seasoned nice and were tasty but the cheese inside was next to inedible to me.

IMG_1409

It tasted like they used processed American Cheese-like product

IMG_5008

instead of a traditional jack or cheddar cheese or combination that most people would expect.

That plate was mine but wasn’t for me.

IMG_5085

Went to Kale and Clover Mindful Kitchen in North Scottsdale AZ. They serve fast food style Health Focused kind of foods. I went to get my beverage and saw all the teas were flavored….(bah)…so I decided to try a strawberry kiwi green tea. The tea tasted like green tea slightly flavored water. I asked my husband to close his eyes and taste it.

He said,

“This just taste like water with something in it.”

That’s the Forking Truth! It just tasted like water with a tiny bit of green tea  in it.

I got my salad.

IMG_5092

It’s an attractive salad made with several nice ingredients but the salad was very dry and chicken in the salad was tasteless. I guess most people would be thrilled with this salad but it wasn’t for me.

My husband had their Jambalaya Bowl.

IMG_5088

He said the turkey sausage in it was delicious but he also said the sauce around the rice was too salty and smokey for him.

My husband normally likes very salty foods so it’s very unusual for him to complain about too much salt. It must have been a salt bomb.

He was upset that I picked this place for lunch.

IMG_8806

He also left half his food there and never does that.

This place wasn’t for either for us.

I do note I don’t know if my experience is typical of these restaurants since my written thoughts here are only based on first impressions.

Oh well…….doesn’t mean that these places are bad……Just not for me…. I’ll do forking better next time.

Sun Valley Bakery in Phoenix AZ makes Banh Mi Sandwiches that are Worth A Fork! Now CLOSED for Business

IMG_4860

7-1-17*****UPDATE Now Closed for Business

Sun Valley Bakery in Phoenix AZ is a small Vietnamese Eatery in Phoenix AZ. This place really seems like Vietnamese Food for Vietnamese People. This restaurant is located in an older strip mall that is surrounded by several other Vietnamese and Asian businesses and a couple Mexican Businesses. On my visit all I saw was lots of take out by Asian people. They were all taking out multiple bags of food in large boxes. It looked like all the boxes contained soups. This place is called a Bakery but I didn’t see any baked goods for sale. I don’t know if they sell baked goods. The interior of the restaurant is NOT Fancy and is older and dated looking. I also note that the air conditioning doesn’t work well. It appears that it hasn’t worked in years and a portable air conditioner sits on the floor that brings the temperature down a little.

IMG_4856

This is another place where you are not here for the atmosphere and only are here for the food. They have one full size menu that stays on a table by the cash register. They offer many appetizers some that I never heard of before like Tapioca Cakes with meat. I didn’t get to page threw the whole menu but some of the food offered is food has ingredients in it that aren’t offered at most Vietnamese Restaurants like Pork Blood Porridge, Steamed Rice cake with Skin, Lemon grass soup with legs. They also offer over twenty kinds of noodle soup, many rice plates, rice soups and the most inexpensive Banh Mi Menu I have ever seen.

IMG_4852

The Banh Mi Sandwiches are priced $3.50 and $4.00 each.

The Food Critic from our Newspaper said that this restaurant makes the BEST Banh Mi in the area so I wanted to try the Banh Mi here because I don’t get to eat Banh Mi too often or at too many places.

My husband went for the steamed pork Bahn Mi and I went for the Sardine, tomato and Onion Banh Mi.

I was going to get a drink from the refrigerator.

IMG_4853

The first drink I came across was White Gourd Drink? WTFork is that? Maybe it was cucumber juice? Maybe that would be alright. I like cucumbers. I saw Pepsi and a few other American sodas I don’t drink and another can of something with soy. It just feels like you entered a foreign land here. I went with a glass of water.

IMG_4854

Soon my Sardine Banh Mi arrives.

IMG_4857

The bread was studier than other Banh Mi Breads I had before but it also was very crisp on the outside and softer on the inside. The bread was just heated in the oven. This sandwich was very unique but delicious. It was almost like eating a very good but different tuna hoagie. I liked the texture of the meaty sardines in this sandwich and the bright cilantro and crisp cucumber just brightened it all up. The tomato and sardine oil soaked into the bread and added another layer and moist flavorful texture to the sandwich. I would get this sandwich again.

My husband went for the Steamed Pork Banh Mi.

IMG_4858

This Pork differed from other Pork Banh Mi Sandwiches he had before. He thought the pork had multiple textures and thought it was might contain various parts of the pig. He ate it and said it wasn’t bad at all but he has a preference to just pork without the parts. (I do note they offer other pork banh mi sandwiches like the BBQ pork that the cashier recommended to us)

I have no idea how they can sell these banh mi sandwiches at only $3.50 and $4.00 each. They are  cheaper than fast food. Gosh a Jack in the Box Burger cost something like a forking $5.00 and is awful. These Banh Mi Sandwiches are so much better!

The cashier/cook was helpful and friendly. She acted like she really enjoyed having us here.

The Banh Mi Sandwiches are a PHO-Nominal Value and are Worth a FORK!

NO..Your not going to drive across town to dine here...but if your in the area if they serve what I had most of the food is very tasty and fresh.

If your around Central Phoenix and are in the mood for Vietnamese you might want to give this place a try.

This restaurant doesn’t have a website and isn’t on FaceBook. For more information on Sun Valley Bakery in Phoenix AZ you’re going to have to give them a call. 602-354-6600

Pickled Beets with Beet Stems, Leaves, Clementines & Blue Cheese Recipe

Pickled Beets with Stems, Leaves, Clementines and Blue Cheese

Pickled Beets with Stems, Leaves, Clementines and Blue Cheese

I saw a beautiful bunch of beets today at the store. The beets had nice leaves so I figured the beets might have been picked not too long back. Beets with live leaves usually taste much better and usually have a better texture so I brought them home.

IMG_4932

Usually I only eat the beet greens in salads because they are bitter but today I cooked them up with the stems while I cooked the beets.

IMG_4933

I cooked the beets with vintagers, sugar and a couple clementines to infuse another flavor into the beets.

IMG_4934

The beets were very large and took 90 minutes covered in a 350 degree F oven. When the beets are cool enough to handle the skins just slip off.

IMG_4940

While the beets were cooking I sautéed up celery, beet stems, onion, garlic and threw in the beet greens last.

Then the plate gets dressed up with toppings.

Pickled Beets with Stems, Leaves, Clementines and Blue Cheese

Pickled Beets with Stems, Leaves, Clementines and Blue Cheese

3 medium/large beets – with stems and fresh leaves for the rest of the recipe – washed well

1 cup red wine vinegar

1 cup rice wine vinegar

1 cup sugar

2 clementines – each cut in half

2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

3 celery stalks – peeled and sliced

beet stems – from your beets – chopped

1/2 sweet onion – chopped

2 garlic cloves – ground up or mashed

1 Tablespoon kosher salt or sea salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

beet leaves – pulled off the stems in bit size pieces

2 small clementines

3 scallions greens sliced thin

3oz blue cheese – crumbled

6 dates – seeded – sliced thin

6 Tablespoons honey

3 oz almonds – toasted

6 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

fresh ground sea salt

Aleppo pepper

Directions

Set your oven to 350 degrees F

Get a large pan. Cut your beets in halves and place in pan.

2 clementines cut in half and add to pan along with-

red wine vinegar, rice wine vinegar, sugar

Cover the pan and cook until for tender. (one hour – 90 minutes depending on size of beets and oven.

In your fry pan on medium high heat add 2 Tablespoons olive oil, celery, beet stems, sweet onion, garlic, 1 Tablespoon salt, black pepper and cover loosely and cook till sweated (till all is soft). Now add beet leaves and cover. (this will cook fast) and lastly stir in the two clementines segments.

For serving slice the beets and serve about one half a beet per person.

Top the beets with a scoop of contents fro the fry pan.

Top each serving with scallions, blue cheese,  dates, honey, extra virgin olive oil, toasted almonds, fresh ground sea salt and Aleppo pepper.

Enjoy!
