A Taste of Chilli King Chinese Food Glendale AZ – Very Flavorful and Ultra Spicy -Not the best Take Out Service but the Food is Worth a Fork!

Chilli King Chinese Food is located in Glendale Arizona not too far from Old Town Glendale. They offer American Chinese Foods, Hot Pots, some other dishes that you don’t find everywhere like scrambled eggs with tomato and Yangzhou fried rice (shrimp, sausage, pork, eggs, peas, carrots, scallions). The foods we tried so far were all flavorful. They also offer the ultra spicy foods. Portions are large and prices are low………The only downside is that service is usually poor when you do take out. They have their young son run the restaurant. He does a good job at taking orders and payments but there are issues with take out. …..Usually you need to wait about 40 minutes for your order to be done even if you prepay your order. They don’t start making your order until you show up. We waited around 45 minutes every time we did take out. My husband tried to speak to an adult about this but couldn’t because of the language barrier with the chef. On our first visit the boy’s mother helped with service. This restaurant is mainly open for take out. They do have four small tables inside that you can dine at if you wish. Soft beverages are offered here.

They offer the usual appetizers like –

spring rolls

On the menu they offer-

Szechuan beef (tender beef flavorful and spicy)

spicy chicken (tender chicken, very flavorful….this one was REALLY very hot spicy…this was one of the Ultra Spicies)

coconut curry chicken with steamed vegetables (flavorful and tender chicken)

sautéed vegetables with chicken

They offer sides such as chow mien, fried rice, steamed rice, and steamed vegetables

This dish is very different to us….

They are kind of funky and spicy…………..texture is weird ……maybe slightly raw………really different…not sure if I like or not?…………too different for me.

MY favorite dish here (so far) is next.

Spicy boil chicken with greens and sprouts….The chicken is so tender and moist and this spicy (really good spicy with Szechuan peppercorns is magically delicious)

Here’s the what they call instant boil hot pot (they say it’s an authentic Chinese Soup)

sausage (we think they are hot dogs?), beef, chicken, potato, tofu, cabbage, mushrooms, steamed rice) Spicy and flavorful. Proteins are very moist and tender.

Oh and did I mention that portions run extra large?

The food is very good and a good value…Service….well ….usually isn’t the best.

Fly Bye – Pizza, Chicken & More – Phoenix AZ Desert Ridge – A little taste

Fly Bye is a casual order at the counter and take out restaurant located in North Phoenix Arizona in Desert Ridge and is soon to be in three locations in Metro Phoenix. This restaurant is one of eleven Fox Restaurant Concept Group restaurants that are in at least fourteen states. On the menu at Fly Bye are snacks like mozzarella sticks and crispy Brussels sprouts. They also offer chicken tenders, chicken wings, salads, a few hoagies, hand stretched pizzas, and Detroit Style pizzas. Bottles and cans of soft beverages, beer, and wine are available.

This is a small place but they do have a some tables inside and a few tables outside.

You order and pay at the counter.

Then you pick up your beverage from the beverage refrigerator and get your napkins, silverware and plates yourself. When your order is ready someone runs your food to you.

We ordered far more food than we could eat in one visit just to try as much as we could.

We started with the roasted buffalo cauliflower bowl.

This is a bowl of fried cauliflower, avocado seasoned with za’atar, tomato, arugula, cucumbers, onions, and creamy feta dressing is in the bottom of the bowl. It’s not bad but neither of taste any buffalo…maybe it was left off? The za’atar is good but it’s only on the avocado….? I wonder why they don’t add harissa here…It could pop with a little harissa.

Next we tried three chicken tenders. They come with a few crinkle fries, ketchup and your choice of sauce. I picked Nashville Hot sauce.

This was my favorite plate here today. The breading has a good texture and seems free of oil. It’s also a lot lighter than they look. Without sauce they do taste under seasoned. But the chicken inside is incredibly moist. I think that the Nashville Hot sauce is very good…..It’s so full of flavors and a little heat. Now I wish I had a pickle…..The crinkle fries are better than I expected them to be and are very fluffy inside and are seasoned nicely.

They offer hand stretched pizza in regular and large sizes and Detroit Style pizzas in regular and large sized. We ordered two pizzas to try and started with the classic cheese regular sized Detroit Style.

The pizza does have nice crispy edges but lacks that cheesy corner. The crust is MUCH lighter and fluffier than any other Detroit style pizza that I have tried. It taste just like Wonder Bread to me……The tomato is a rich tomato taste and the cheese is nicely melted.

We also tried a regular sized hand stretched Lebanese Mom Pizza.

This pizza is made of marinated tomatoes, roasted garlic, spinach, za’atar, and feta yogurt.

The crust also has that Wonder Bread Taste and it is stretched very thin so it’s not too heavy. It’s not a hard crisp bottom and is more like a party pizza bottom. The marinated tomatoes taste about the same as the regular tomato sauce today. You get the feta flavor from the feta yogurt. A little bit of za’atar was used to slightly season it………. It’s up to you to add salt, or a pepper.

Chick A Dee – Traditional Thai Chicken & Rice Phoenix AZ

Chick A Dee is a small Thai Restaurant that serves a limited menu of mostly chicken and rice dishes in Phoenix Arizona. The chicken and rice dish (khaow sun kai) is a traditional comfort food dish that you would find being served on the streets in Thailand. Some of the things that you can get are……..steamed white meat chicken, steamed dark meat chicken, half white – half dark chicken, crispy fried chicken, a combo of fried and white meat, all with mild ginger garlic steamed rice, clear chicken soup, and a sauce. One plate is offered as a salad and they also offer a faux chicken served with purple rice that is vegan. They also offer a few sides. Some of the sides are chicken nuggets called “cluckets,”potstickers, wings, and fried bananas with coconut ice cream. Thai beverages and regular soft beverages are served here.

It’s very casual. You order and pay at the counter. You pick up your tray of food when it’s ready.

The food is ready in reasonable time and share a variety of what they offer.

The cluckets (chicken nuggets) are very unique.

They are some sort of formed chicken with a coating that is dusted with a little sugar, flavors and HEAT. They are tasty but are NOT for children….or whimps.

Potstickers are fried and crisp to perfection but are not the main attraction here.

Crispy chicken taste exactly the way it looks. It has a nice crisp coating without any unusual seasonings….We tried the sweet black sauce and it was something very unusual to us and was far too sweet for us. The other sauces they offer are sweet chili, sweet & sour and Thai Traditional (That I liked).

For me the main dig was the dish called half and half (steamed white meat chicken and steamed dark meat chicken with mild ginger garlic rice, cucumbers, Thai traditional sauce and a black sweet Thai style iced tea.

The chicken was steamed but comes out the same as poached. It’s fresh tender and moist. You eat it with the clear soup. I think that the Thai Traditional sauce gives it all the flavors that it needs. My husband isn’t a fan of ginger so the sauce was too gingery for him. But I thought that it was just right.

A Little Taste of China Chili Restaurant Phoenix AZ

China Chili Restaurant is located in Central Phoenix Arizona. They offer a lot of the usual American Chinese and Hong Kong Style Chinese Foods (that means Cantonese inspired). They offer a variety of appetizers like boiled won tons, fried prawns, and crab puffs. They offer several varieties of soups, duck, and the usual chicken, beef, some tofu, and vegetarian dishes. They happen to offer many choices of seafood such as shrimp, calamari, flounder, scallops, mussels, striped bass, live seafood, and a surprise dish that I’ve found on their Grub Hub Menu but I didn’t find on their in-house menu. A dish called French Style Beef with macadamia nuts…..

It looks like a nice Chinese Restaurant when you walk in….. The take out and cashier area is up in front by the door.

Inside is a nice big dining room.

The tables are set with paper linen and lots of paper Chinese placemats. Tables also include condiments.

As soon as we were seated……Even before we ordered….Someone ran out two cups of soup to us.

The soup taste like egg drop soup and has kernels of fresh corn in it.

I looked at the menu and noticed that it differs slightly from on-line menus. I didn’t notice the hot pots or French Style beef on the menu but maybe it was my bad and maybe I just missed them?

I go with the flounder in white sauce with snow peas….accented with some carrots and scallions.

It’s a large portion of fish and vegetables. It’s in a mild chicken based sauce lightly accented with ginger. It’s very easy to eat because it’s so light in the stomach…Nothing heavy here. Steamed rice is on the side.

My husband went with the Szechwan beef.

It’s very good but not what either of us were expecting. The beef is very tender and has this very light fried coating that is UNIQUE and also easy to eat. The sauce is actually spicy hot but not too sweet and is sort of beef gravy flavored Asian sauce. No vegetables here but a few crisp noodles are in there. I would enjoy this more if I could add vegetables to this dish or order it as an appetizer for a larger table. We both think that it is very good but we like some vegetables with our meat dishes.

Not recently but I did previously enjoy take out from China Chili. This restaurant isn’t close to where I live or I would have been here more often.

I did enjoy the flounder in black bean sauce but I do like the flounder in white sauce more with the snow peas.

I do like the chicken tomato dish with egg flowers but it does run slightly sweeter than I like but the tomatoes did have a good tomato flavor and the chicken was tender.

Campo Italian Bistro Scottsdale AZ – Not Perfection but mostly very good

Campo Italian Bistro is located in Scottsdale Arizona. They are a full service seasonal Italian Restaurant by Genuine Concepts Group. This group includes Metro Phoenix Bars and restaurants such as The Genuine, The Vig, The Little Woody, The Womack, and McMillon. James Beard Award Wining, Celebrity Chef Alex Stratta and Well Seasoned Chef Jeremy Pachero are partners of The Genuine Concepts Group.

Menus are seasonal but always include a lot of variety and usually seasonal specials.

Even the brunch menu includes snacks. It also includes some topped toasts, salads (proteins can be added), pizzas, brunch entrees, and panini.

The dinner menu is also seasonal and changes slightly now and then. The dinner menu also includes snacks, antipasto, salads, pastas, pizzas and entrees. Below are some brunch items and dinners that we’ve tried.

Here’s a snack of the day special – Goat cheese mousse with beets, apples, and a cheese crisp.

Much better and not dried out.

I really loved this salad (below) but it’s not here this season. I am partial to the Salmon from Campo. It’s been fish house quality great every time so far.

This salad was the arugula, marinated fennel, with pistachios, local citrus, pecorino cheese, and a vinaigrette. (salmon was added). I must note that Campo Italian Bistro so far has always done phenomenal salmon. It always has a crispy skin, is seasoned nicely, and is never over cooked.

creste pasta (not on current menu) – locally made pasta, local Schriener’s sausage, broccolini, roasted peppers, feta cheese. Came out very dry without a sauce to hold it together.

chicken al matone with gnocchi and mushrooms – The chicken was very dry this evening and our server didn’t check on us. A busboy took the plate. I didn’t even bring the chicken home for my dogs. I didn’t want to complain after I was done but I didn’t come back for a very long time because of this dry chicken and service. On my recent visit I was going to order the chicken again to give it another try. So I asked my server about it. She said, “It’s a 50/50 shot if it will be dry.” I’m so glad that I had an honest server..So I didn’t take a chance on it again.

It’s a little smaller with less beans but still very good.

Grilled bone-in pork chop – crisp parmesan fingerling potatoes, Brussels sprouts, apple mostarda – This was tender, moist and good.

For dessert we’ve tried –

The semifreddo – (raspberries, pine nuts, yuzu) on a more recent visit it differed.

I didn’t get the yuzu as much…….

On Opentable the Campo manager noticed my comments about dining there. I mentioned my dinner about the dry chicken and mentioned not being checked on. I said that I waited a long time to go back to Campo and again it wasn’t perfect again. Our two course brunch took 90 minutes. Our smoked salmon pizza was missing the everything seasoning and the capers differed from menu description (latter told they changed recipe). The other problem was my husband’s Italian ham & cheese seemed like it was sitting under a heat lamp for a long time and was served all dried out. The manager noticed my comments on Opentable and invited me back.

Again NOT PERFECT…..The manager was there (next to us comping something for that table because nobody was waiting on them) but ignored us and didn’t comp anything. My husband asked for the manager. After a few minutes the server said that he was no where to be found…………….My husband told the server about the situation and she did take my meal off the bill and THAT’S THE FORKING TRUTH!

Collins Bros. Chophouse Scottsdale AZ – Newly Opened

The Collins Bros. Chophouse is located in Scottsdale Arizona and is a sister…..or is it a “brother” restaurant of the chef Christopher Collins Common Ground Culinary Group of restaurants and catering. Across the street from this NEW Chophouse is “brother restaurant” Grassroots Kitchen & Tap, and also Sweet Provisions – Ice Cream, Candy, and Dessert Shop. Other “Brother” Restaurants are……. The Collins, The Macintosh, The Brotherly, Arcadia Catering, and soon to open St Urban.

The Collins Bros. Chophouse offers a very similar American Comfort food menu to the other Common Ground Restaurants but with a few Chophouse additions. They offer a rotating menu of seafood soups, fresh oysters, other starters, salads, burgers, sandwiches, rotisserie chicken,

house specialties and butcher shop. A few of those items are baby back ribs, Scottish salmon, Maryland style crab cakes, prime ribs, center cut filets, and a dry aged porterhouse. They also offer a children’s menu.

Outside they offer a patio with misters.

Inside was very busy and it was difficult to photo dodging servers, customers and management.

My husband started with the HH two buck shuck.

Three fresh oysters with cocktail sauce and drawn butter. He said that they were fresh tasting but not the brine-ee type.

We shared another Happy Hour food and went with the cauliflower wings.

They have a crunchy panko type coating and are made with sriracha aioli and are topped with cilantro and sesame seeds. Tasty but they are more like nuggets than wings……They are good for most people but might be slightly salty to sensitive people.

For my main I went with the rotisserie chicken chophouse style.

It a half rotisserie chicken (breast, small thigh, tiny leg, with really perfect onion rings and Pommery mustard sauce. The chicken seems infused with good chicken flavors. I tried the thigh and that is juicy and good. The breast has good flavors but is a bit dry tonight. It’s tasty with the mustard sauce.

We also shared a side order of mixed greens.

They are fresh and seasoned nicely. They are a mix of greens. Some are spinach, it looks like Swiss chard in there and some greens are artichoke hearts.

My husband tried the bone-in veal parmesan (served Thursday – Saturday) with house made pasta, San Marzano tomato sauce, mozzarella and red pepper flakes.

He said the veal was tender but could have been seasoned more. I tasted a small piece of pasta and the sauce did seem bland. He thinks that the red pepper flakes might have been missing.

Desserts are not to be missed at the Collins Restaurants. I was too full for dessert tonight so I did take out a coconut cream pie because it is always a winner.

It’s not as pretty as a dine-in version but still is just as delicious the next day. It is really FORKING Delicious! Even my husband who is a hater of coconut cream pies loves it.

They gave me a second dessert. The butter cake…..Maybe by accident? Or maybe because the coconut cream pie looked sort of damaged?

It’s a very different looking butter cake. I’ve never seen one that looks like this before. Usually they are all melted and very gooey looking. They also gave us ice cream (that made it home on a 30 minute ride, whipped cream that is very buttery, and strawberry sauce. Both me and my husband have never liked butter cakes. I guess they just are too buttery for us…..But this Butter cake is different. It’s more like a pound cake….We can eat that…It’s just a good cake! YUM!

West Hut African Cuisine is located in the Midtown Area of Phoenix Arizona. It’s located across from Park Central.

It’s casual inside with wait service.

At the time of my visit only soft beverages are served but it appears that a liquor license is pending.

We started out by sharing the kelewele (spiced tasty plantains)

The entrees don’t have African Names.

I tried the dish called The West Hut with chicken with jollot rice (Ghana style). Most of the entrees are chicken, beef, or goat.

I received a skin on, bone-in chicken leg and part of breast covered in a tomato based sauce with a side of spicy pepper sauce. I also received plain plantains, a little salad garnish and the jollot rice. It’s all tasty. I think anyone would like it.

My husband got the I Love Spinach dish with chicken and Fufu.

He got either the same chicken or a very similar chicken but the spinach is tasty and flavored different. It’s also slightly spicy. Neither of us ever had fufu before. It’s really interesting. You pinch some off and make a tortilla to eat the food. The fufu almost taste like mashed potatoes but with little flavor.

Our server was helpful guiding us threw the menu and made suggestions.

The FANTABULOUS Dish – The Arugula Salad from REVOLU Modern Taqueria & Bar – WORTH A FORK!

The FANTABULOUS Dish means – Top of the line, marvelously good, peachy keen, and dynamite! WOW what a great surprise . You just don’t always know when a FANTABULOUS dish will show up. This salad just blew both of us away. It’s only named Arugula salad. I picked it to share as an appetizer instead of chips because it sounded lighter and healthy. I wasn’t expecting jaw dropping fireworks of flavors……

This salad is made of avocado, watermelon, red onion (pickled), pico, toasted pepitas, cotija cheese, and this MAGICAL chili-lime vinaigrette.

I need to mention as astonishingly delicious as this salad is ………I must mention that it is spicy HOT. Borderline too hot for me but it was so DAM delicious I had to keep eating it. You get sweet from the watermelon, creamy from the avocado, hot and delicious from the MAGICAL chili-lime vinaigrette, Umami from the cheese, yummy from the pepitas and the right amount of bitter from the arugula. It’s far more delicious than I can describe. You can also add on protein to this dish if desired.

George Yang’s Chinese Cuisine Phoenix AZ – Upscale STYLE American Chinese Food

George Yang’s Chinese Cuisine is located in the west camelback area of Phoenix Arizona. They serve mostly American Chinese Food like noodle dishes, egg foo young, moo shu, and fried rice. They also offer some foods that are somewhat upscale STYLE for American Chinese restaurants like filet mignon, scallops with mushrooms and zucchini, and black truffle fried rice. They also offer a healthy menu if you need your food steamed, gluten free or low carb. You can also find an extensive wine list. While this is not a truly upscale restaurant the service was impeccable in an upscale style sort of way.

It’s formal and neat inside.

They offer many of the usual starters like spring rolls and crab puffs.

We went with something different and tried the crispy dried sautéed taro.

Our server said that they are Chinese French Fries that are better than regular French Fries. They are kinda like potato sticks that are tossed with onions and scallions that are mixed with a little bit of Asian sauce. They also are a very generous serving….actually all the plates are very generous from what we tried.

Tonight we shared the spicy fish and the black truffle fried rice.

The spicy fish is a mild white fish that is more crispy than spicy…..actually it is so darn crispy that they could win a prize for crispiest fish ever. I do need to add that the fish inside the hard crust is astonishingly prepared to perfection……It’s served with tender crisp broccoli and is in a black bean sauce that taste kinda sweet like spicy duck sauce and also salty from soy sauce.

Here’s the black truffle fried rice.

It’s not the usual fried rice. It does have a really nice black truffle aroma. It’s made with some sort of ground up black truffle. Most of the rice seemed steamed but it also is studded with a little bit of crunchy rice and soft fried egg.

Service was very professional and efficient.

That was my trip to George Yang’s Chinese Cuisine in Phoenix AZ (This is a sister restaurant of the George and Sons restaurants….so if you are a fan of them then you will be a fan of George Yang’s Chinese Cuisine)

Mrs White’s Golden Rule Cafe Phoenix AZ – A Soulful Phoenix Institution – Worth a Fork!

Mrs Whites Golden Rule Cafe is located in downtown Phoenix near to Chase Field in Arizona.This soul food restaurant is an institution to Phoenix and has been in business since 1964. They offer very good not fancy but a limited menu of HOMESTYLE southern style comfort foods like……. fried chicken, smothered pork chops, fried catfish, oxtails, chicken fried steak, macaroni and cheese, cabbage and rice, black eyed peas, sweet potatoes, soft beverages, and sometimes desserts. You also do need to keep in mind that you need to follow the golden rule here. You will not receive your bill and must go to the window to pay when you are done.

Celebrities have dined at Mrs Whites such as James Brown, Jesse Jackson, The Queen of Soul Herself Aretha Franklin, and according to AZCentral American Politician John McCane was a regular.

This isn’t a fancy place.

It’s a bit old and worn. It looks like a little old diner inside.

Inside is a shrine to Mrs White.

I had the humble golden brown Southern Fried Chicken with sweet potatoes and macaroni salad.

The chicken was perfectly crisp and perfectly seasoned and moist inside. Nothing fancy or different…..Just perfect delicious fried chicken with some crispy fried skin. The sweet potatoes were very creamy and sat in this slightly sweet buttery liquid…….The corn bread is slightly dry like cornbread is suppose to be…(it’s the Yankee style that is moist and sweet)… I liked dipping the corn bread into the sweet buttery sweet potato liquid. It’s a large portion so for some this might be more than one meal.

My husband tried the chicken fried steak with macaroni and cheese and also the black eyed peas.

He said that the chicken fried steak really was the best one that he remembers eating. He also like dunking his cornbread into my sweet potato liquid. He liked the macaroni and cheese and the black eyed peas.

I didn’t stuff myself silly….although I could have and saved room for dessert but none were available tonight.
